Andrei Znamenski has studied history and anthropology both in Russia and the United States. Formerly a resident scholar at the Library of Congress, then a foreign visiting professor at Hokkaido University, Japan, he is current Professor of History at the University of Memphis. He has been teaching courses in the History of Religions, World Civilizations, and Russian History. His major fields of interests include intellectual history, Modernity, Western esotericism, Shamanism, Siberia and North America. Among others, he is the author of such books as The Beauty of the Primitive: Shamanism and Western Imagination (2007), the three-volume anthology Shamanism: Critical Concepts (2004), and Red
