Hello, and thank you for watching this installment in Aventis Systems’ webinar series, ‘Recovery Tactics - How to Rebound After Data Loss.’
My name is Amber Williams, Event Coordinator at Aventis Systems. I have with me today, Peter Miles, to give us valuable information about data recovery.
Peter is a Technical Sales Engineer here at Aventis Systems and serves as a trusted advisor to IT professionals, troubleshooting to overcome problems and remove any technical barriers that may arise.
Welcome Peter!
Peter Introduces Topic
Thank you Amber.
When people look at a company’s assets and what is most valuable, they generally think about equipment, buildings, or the company car. While these things certainly hold value, they pale in comparison to the value of data. Data is the lifeblood of an organization, and any time data isn’t accessible by employees or customers, there is usually a loss in revenue associated with it. We go to great lengths to be sure that our data is safe, but some things can’t be prevented.
Data loss usually happens due to a few common causes.
The first of these causes is corruption or loss of configuration.
Most systems administrators out there are familiar with the infamous blue screen of death. A lot of the time these occurrences can be fixed simply by running a check disk, but that isn’t always the case. The wrong files becoming corrupt can cripple a server, and for that matter a business as well.
Loss of configuration is referring to a raid controller no longer being able to recognize the raid configuration that was supposed to keep your data safe. That means your data is still there, but the hardware can’t piece it all together to view.
When these things happen those two cringe worthy words get mentioned “Data Recovery”.
Another common cause of data loss is hard drive failure.
If you have more drives fail than your raid level can sustain, or you’re running a single disk system with important data on a hard drive, failure can be the cause of a long and stressful day.
With the drive failed, you may not be completely out of luck however, and data recovery can still be performed in some cases to retrieve your mission critical data.

That’s great to hear you may not be completely out of luck when a drive fails!
Could you give us an example scenario of how someone can recover this data?
Sure thing:
Bob here has a server that is running his small business. All of his data is on a raid 5, but his operating system is on a single disk.
His single disk fails, and he can no longer access his data to do his day-to-day business.
Contacting a third party vendor for data recovery would allow him to gain access to that data to be used on a backup system, or possibly recover the operating system from the failed disk and have it placed on a brand new disk to get him back in business as soon as possible.

Just make sure the third party vendor you’re considering has a proven track record and case studies!
Now, Peter, what about those data loss scenarios that aren’t involved with corruption or failure?
I’m glad you brought that up, Amber.
As we have seen through the years everything has room for human error, and data loss is no stranger.
Whether it is an employee that deletes an important folder from their PC, or a junior admin who deletes the wrong partition from your production server, these things can happen.
The good thing is that even though data has been deleted, it doesn’t always mean it is gone forever. There are methods and tools that can be put to use to scan for deleted items and then recover and restore them to their original state.
Data recovery methods and tools like partition scanners and imaging software can be a very handy thing when the wrong button gets clicked and company data is on the line. These tools allow us to run deep scans on hard drives to find things that were accidentally deleted.
