Leadership is an interpersonal influence directed
  toward the achievement of a goal or goals.

Interpersonal, a leader has more than one person
   (group) to lead.

Influence is the power to affect others.

Goal is the end one strives to attain.

    – According to William Litzinger and Thomas Schaefer in
      “Leadership Through Followership,”
      the West Point Thesis states:
      “the notion that leadership may be chiefly an
      achievement of followers - that able leaders
      may emerge from the ranks of able followers”

  1. -Describe the West Point Thesis & why it is called that..   2. These characteristics describe both effective leaders and managers. It is important for us to understand that good leaders and followers have many, if not all of the same characteristics.
  3. Every day many of us fulfill both the leader and follower role in our jobs everyday. Most of us answer to someone in our jobs (and someone usually answers to us). Even people with jobs we think of as at the top of the ladder have someone to answer to. For example, CEOs have to please the stock holders; and the President has the responsibility of following the goals of his party, working with Congress, and working for the good of the people of the country, or he may not get re-elected. Example: An American President, President and Chief of Staff are best friends & the Chief of Staff has helped the President get into office. Likely, the Chief of Staff could have run for an office himself and gotten elected. Instead, he chose to back the President, thus taking on the roll of follower although the they both had many of the same characteristics and abilities.
  4. With this point, I will turn the presentation over to Hanof & she wil cover some pointers on how to be a good leader.
