   Agenda and Objectives
Today’s objectives...
• We will review:
  – converting fractions to decimals
  – finding equivalent decimals
• We will practice and discuss
  comparing decimals.
Review:
Converting Fractions to Decimals
• Sometimes you can change the denominator
of a fraction to be10, 100, or 1,000 to make it
easier to convert to a decimal.
• Example: 1/5
   – What could we multiply x 5 to get 10? 2.
   – Multiply the numerator and denominator by 2. So,
     1 x 2 = 2, 5 x 2 = 10.
   – The new fraction says 2/10.
   – 2/10 Two tenths 0.2
Review:
Converting Fractions to Decimals
• Now try the same method with these
  fractions:
*Remember, try to get the denominator to
  be 10, 100, or 1,000.
  – 1/50

  – 3/20

• Homework: page 87
• Let’s go around the room and share our
  answers for #1-11.
• If you don’t want to share, you can say
  “pass”.

Comparing Decimal Numbers
Put the following numbers in order from
          Greatest ------ Least.
      1. 543, 341, 978

      2. 751, 572, 321

      3. 235, 313, 413

      4. 451, 223, 571, 121

Comparing Decimal Numbers
• What is a number between 0 and 2?

• What is a number between 1 and 2?

• What is a number between 1.5 and 2?

• Let’s make a number line to show where
  those numbers are.
Comparing Decimal Numbers
• What is a number between 0 and 0.1?

• What is a number between 0.1 and 0.2?

• What is a number between 0.15 and 0.2?

• Let’s make a number line to show where those
  numbers are.
Comparing Decimal Numbers
• Use your decimal place value sheet to help you compare:
     0.2_________0.02
     1.0_________0.1
     0.5_________0.2
• Rules for Comparing Decimals:
Line the numbers up, one below the other. Line up the
decimal points to be sure all of the place values are
     lined up.
Start at the left and work to the right. Compare one
     column at a time.

points to be sure all of the place values are lined up.

     time.
• Examples: 0. 5
     Compare 0.5 and 0.289
                                          0. 2 8 9
5 tenths is greater than 2 tenths.
     0.5 > 0.289

     Compare 0.882 and 0.89 0. 8 8 2
8 hundredths is less than 9 hundredths.
                                                   0. 8 9
