Students
Relationship
Rapport
The term rapport refers to the quality of the relationship in a
classroom: teacher-student and student-student. It is not primarily
technique-driven, but grows naturally when people like each other
and get on together.
Techniques:Building rapport
Discussion in group
Can you think of some techniques
for building rapport.
Techniques:
1. Be welcoming, be encouraging, be
approachable
2. Treat each learner as an individual
3. Remember positive things about
your students
4. Empathise
5. Be you rather than the teacher
6. Be culturally sensitive
7. Avoid sarcasm
• A positive relationship with students is a part of classroom
management
How would you characterise the
quality of rapport in your own
lessons? What factors seem to
improve or worsen it?
Case studies
Case study 1
• Aye Aye’s parents are poor and Su Su’s parents are rich. They
are grade three students. Both of them are clever, but Aye Aye
is brighter than Su Su. Su Su brings juices and snacks for the
teacher every day. So, teacher love and care Su Su more than
Aye Aye. In the exam, Aye Aye can answer the entire question
correctly but when the result out Su Su’s mark is higher than
Aye Aye.
Case study 2
• Mya Aye was a teacher at migrant school. Before she went to
school she had conflict with her husband. At that time she was
furious with her husband and her face became red and could
not smile. When she arrived in classroom, one of her student
came and asks question that she didn’t understand .so she
didn’t answer to the student and she scored to the student.
• Case student 3
• There was a quiet student at middle school in Umphiem camp.
Her name was Hla Hla. She was studying at Grade 5. She came
late to school most often. Sometime, she absent the school.
When she came to school, she always sit back behind of their
classroom and stay so quiet. Teacher gave Mathematic
exercise to students in the class. At students finished their
exercise on time and show exercise to teacher. Hla Hla
couldn’t finish her exercise. So, the teacher scolds her for lat
to do exercise and miss the class. All of her classmate also
laugh out for hearing teacher’s scold. But Hla Hla never
quarrels and angry with her friends in the school.
• Case study 4
• There was a primary school in Mae Pa. At that school, every
teacher usually give home work to students. Students were so
clever and interested in their lessons. Therefore they usually
complete their and brought homework to school. But Grade 3
students never brought their home work in English class even
though the teacher gave homework to students every day. In
addition, they never miss the English class. Before one week
of first exam at their school, Grade 3 class teacher check all
students note books. The teacher saw most pages were blanks
in English homework book/notebook. Therefore, the teacher
calls all students and asks the reason for not doing home and
blank pages in English notebook. The students looked each
other faces with and cried out.
• Discussion
• What problem did you see in case studies?
• What is the relationship between teacher and students?
• How can we solve this problem?
• Which parts need to be improved?
