Cloud adoption is growing: Our 1st year at the Midmarket CIO Forum, very few people raised their hands; Our 2nd year, about 30% did; and This year about 50% did.
Backupify was founded in 2008 with the simple premise that companies and people want an effective way to back up their data once it is in the cloud.
Interestingly, while stories like this are in the media about individuals, companies do not offer to have their instances of data loss publicized. But last year, we backed up 10 million files, which is about 1 file every 3 seconds._____This happened to the wife of James Fallows, bureau chief for the Atlantic Monthly, in April, 2011. She lost over 4 GBs of data. Now, she was eventually able to get it back because her husband knew Eric Schmidt, but most of us aren’t so lucky. This story is important because it highlights one of the problems caused by this massive transition from having our data locally, on devices we own, to data created and stored far away on someone else’s servers, we all face this risk. Hundreds of millions of us have important personal data in Gmail, Facebook, and other cloud applications that aren’t under our control. If something happens to that data, we don’t have a backup.http://www.wired.com/cloudline/2011/10/gmail-nightmare-even-if-its-in-the-cloud-you-still-have-to-back-it-up/
These dangers are not isolated to consumers. Business adoption of the cloud is growing faster all the time. While it would be inconvenient to lose your personal emails and all your Facebook activity, businesses that lose mission critical data about customers, partners, and finances, could be crushed.(Mention Microsoft BPOS outage – May 16th, 2011)
Collaborativeworkstyles, BYOD, and the rise of SaaS adoption outside of IT’s control contribute to data loss in the cloud.
Every aspect of your on-premise stack is moving to the cloud.
We are the security layer in that migration – the access, the protection of your data that’s now in the cloud.
Customer data, sales information are called to court – that data is now in the cloud. 40% of our customers have a need around archiving & e-discovery. What about you?
We released our developer platform that allows you to build a backup for any SaaS application in a matter of hours and days. All of your data can be in one place. This was a response to many smaller SaaS companies coming to us because they want to offer their customers the layer of protection that they can’t invest their time & money in.
Thus far, we’ve built Backup for GApps & SF to AWS. But our roadmap is expanding quickly to more SaaS applications, for different purposes, and to the storage provider of your choice. Our vision is that there will come a day when you will have all of your data in the cloud, and we want you to be able to determine what is backed up, what is not backed up, where it is backed up, and for how long.
