C
Anyone would assure you that Antonio López was born in Madrid because of the way that he portrays it in his paintings. He
captures the fleeting feeling of dusk, the moment where dawn breaks, the detail of a loft, the life on the balcony of a typical
house in any neighborhood in Madrid, the comings and goings on a busy corner or perhaps a pedestrian street.
But actually this painter was born in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real) on that fateful Three Kings Day of 1936, bearing, like few oth-
ers, the much envied power, and achieved by only the greatest paintbrushes in the history of art, to put into his paintings
all that the meets the eye. He doesn’t need as a muse a monument, an impressive building nor the most touristy part of
the capital, because the grandeur of his paintings is precisely the simplicity of a neighborhood in the outskirts of the city or
a random character. And even though his name has been popular for quite a while, there are few who know the artist that
can resist closing their eyes to imagine his silent ‘Gran Via’, which breathes peace and dawn, without jumping inside in their
imagination.. At this time, it marks the zenith of his work. At this stage, López isn’t lacking in recognition. Among them are
the Gold Medal of Madrid (2010), the Príncipe de Asturias de las Artes prize (1985) and the Velázquez (2006).
López has established the second half of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st century as an independent artist
that has escaped the typical abstract art and collage art which are the current trends of other contemporary artists. His
attention to detail and meditative patient expression are what make the work of Antonio López a unique sensation that you
can enjoy in the Museo de Bellas Artes in Bilbao, from October 10 to January 22 of 2012.

¿Por qué lloramos?, ¿Qué contiene una lágrima? Explorar
Why do we cry? What are tears made of? To explore the
world of emotions through tears is the experiment that
Italian author, Gabriele Picco’s novel is based on. It has
become one of this season’s biggest literary gambles.
Many readers have already entered into this emotional
flashback, told through the eyes of the protagonist. Ennio
is a young man, fascinated by the tears of others, always
imagining what the source of each person’s tears could
be. Why? Because he can’t cry. His soul doesn’t achieve
release through this outlet of unease and of satisfaction.
Ennio fills his adventure of searching for the image of
emotions with mystery in a story that wanders around
the feelings of others. He is captured, absorbed and fas-
cinated by the tears of others in order to hide his emotion
because Ennio harbors a secret- the reason why he can-
not cry.
Picco’s story follows the path that Ennio must take in or-
der to recover the tears that he now collects in photos
from the eyes of others. It is a delicate fable that allows us
to sense the evolution of the character through emotion
and love, along with a gallery of secondary stories that
investigate the pain of the soul and exacerbated feelings.
For example, the drama of Josh, a man that has collected
dust ever since his wife died a victim of 9-11, or Arwin,
who records everything that happens around him through
a camouflaged camera in his hair. The fusion of the world
of dreams with reality raises this novel to the magic of
moving prose.

This is the story of Antonia, a separated single mother, who is torn between the struggle to be an emo-
tionally independent woman and the difficult balance between her work and personal life. Her struggle is
reflected in her five-year-old son, which is the driving force of the narrative. These themes have become
the hallmark of the writer from Cadiz. Through simple, direct language, Elvira Lindo transports us to the
time and place of Spain in the 80’s. Stretching and shaking off the remnants of Francoism, a personified
daring and lawbreaking Madrid, of “la movida,” struggles against a country stuck in its past customs. In
this somewhat autobiographical story, the author and creator of the successful Manolito Gafotas brings us
to this new world that opens up before Spanish society through the life and experiences of Antonia, who
experienced the transition and movement at breakneck speed. The story of this single mother, a journalist,
may well be the story of any other young person in their twenties or thirties in search of a path that doesn’t
always end in stumbling blocks. The easy, conversational prose of the novel wraps the reader into a novel
where the narrator is the absolute protagonist, and without realizing it, leads us through her memories-
from childhood to adolescence and on to her maturity as a woman with the responsibility of caring for her
son, Gabriel. The death of Antonia’s mother is also another pillar in the story- the main reason for the exist-
ence of the protagonist of “Lo que me queda por vivir” (what I have left to live for). Antonia’s maturity and
assertiveness as an independent woman forge to create a novel, just as in “Una palabra tuya,” that reveal
parts of Antonia’s biographical inner life.

La ciudad de las mil caras
The city of a thousand faces
The Catalan singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat says that “Barcelona has a thousand faces,
a thousand fragrances, and a thousand colors”. This statement holds a lot of truth because
each time that you go through the city, you discover a new fragrance, a new color and a
different face of Barcelona. If you lose yourself in the streets of Barrio Gótico, smell the aromas
coming from the Mercado de la Boquería, stand in awe at the architecture of Gaudí or
observe the evening from the Montjuic, you will discover just some of the many ways to
experience the Condal city.
