Persuasive Essay On Domestic Violence
A person has never understood how you could abuse the person you love. Some people find it
amusing to hit on someone that will always be by their side. Who would take their anger out on
someone so innocent that hasn't done anything wrong? It's a question no one can really answer, but
hopefully people will learn a lot from this paper. Anyone's cry for help, is not a laughing matter
because they seriously could be in danger. Domestic Violence is a very touchy subject for anyone,
whether you are a victim or a witness. According to www.merriam–webster.com, domestic violence
is the inflicting of physical injury by one family or household member on another; also, a repeated
or habitual pattern of such behavior. One in three women will experience domestic violence at
some point in their lifetime. According to the Violence Policy Center, 1,388 women were
murdered by men they knew in 2014, and 870 of those murders were committed by an intimate
partner of the victim. (www.domesticshelters.org Abusive Red Flags Everyone Should Know).
Also, www.domesticshelters.org states, if your partner has a violent temper and quickly changes
moods, pressures you to move fast in a relationship, or pushes for immediate commitment, is
continuously jealous and possessive, then he or she is most likely abusive. Domestic violence is
the most overlooked, misunderstood offense. Anyone can go through it, but many can't endure the
pain it brings. According to (www.helpguide.org), people whose partners abuse them physically
and sexually are at a higher risk of being seriously injured or killed. Most people wonder why
doesn't the victim leave the relationship, well it is not that easy. "The question, 'Why does she
stay?' is code for some people for, it's her fault for staying,' as if domestic violence victims
intentionally choose to fall in love with men intent upon destroying us" –Leslie Morgan Steiner
(www.azquotes.com). An abuser will do anything and everything he or she can to make you feel bad
about yourself or defective in some way (www.helpguide.org). The abuser may use intimidation
tactics such as make threatening looks or gestures, smashing things in front of you, destroying
property, hurting your pets, or putting their weapons on

Domestic Violence in America Essay
Domestic abuse in the United States is a large–scale and complex social and health problem. The
home is the most violent setting in America today (Lay, 1994). Sadly enough, the majority of
people who are murdered are not likely killed by a stranger during a hold–up or similar crime but are
killed by someone they know. Not surprisingly, the Center for Disease Control and prevention has
identified interpersonal violence as a major public health problem (Velson–Friedrich, 1994). Current
estimates suggest that three to four million women are the victims of physical abuse by their
intimate partners (Harris & Cook, 1994). According to the FBI, some form of domestic violence
occurs in half of the homes in the United States at least once a...show more content...
For example, beginning in 1992, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care
Organizations, required that all accredited hospitals implement policies and procedures for
identifying, treating and referring victims of abuse (Mason, 1993). This included in–service training
programs for staff members of their emergency departments and ambulatory care facilities (Mason,
1993). In 1994, 83 organizations, including the American Nurses' Association and the American Bar
Association, met to identify gaps and barriers between the health care delivery and criminal justice
systems in dealing with family violence cases. Among their recommendations were the following: a
mechanism for community professional coordination in assessment to maximize family safety; the
creation of community–based family violence coordination councils; and the need to establish, in
every community, a comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and accessible intervention system for
family violence that links health, justice, mental health, social service, and educational systems
(Stanley, 1994). In addition, the American Medical Association (AMA) published guidelines for
Health care professionals to use in identifying domestic violence victims. Violent families are easy to

Domestic Violence Against Women Essay
The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993) defines
violence against women as "any act of gender–based violence that results in, or is likely to result in,
physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts,
coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." (UN
General Assembly 1993).
It is violence in private life that comprises domestic violence against women. Also called Intimate
Partner Abuse and Family Violence, it is a global issue that cuts across all geographic, social,
cultural and ethnic boundaries. But it was only in the last decade of the 20th century that it got
recognition as a serious public health...show more content...
The life expectancy at birth for the population is 66 years, infant mortality is 62 per 1000 live
births and the maternal mortality is 260 deaths per 100,000 live births ( UNDP 2011).
In addition to the globally prevalent forms of domestic violence , women in Pakistan also suffer
from forms of violence carried out in the name of tradition, culture and religion.
Honour killing is an old tradition which involves a male member of the family killing a female
relative if she is suspected of tarnishing the family's honour. In most cases the executor is the
husband, the father or a brother( Minallah and Durrani, 2009).
Stove burning is a form of dowry killing prevalent in the province of Punjab, mostly in the urban
areas. Married women are burned by the husband or his family as a punishment for not providing a
rich dowry, not producing a son, not allowing the husband another wife or as a result of long
running disputes. Acid throwing, particularly on the face, may be committed to avenge refusal of
sexual advances and alleged disloyalty by a wife or female partner. It is done to punish the wife for
bringing dishonor to the husband.
Marriage( Nikaah) to Koran( The holy Book of Muslims) is an old custom where a girl is forced
into celibacy to keep the family wealth intact. It is more prevalent in the Sindh province among the
wealthy feudal lords ( waderas).

One of the most complicated issues facing health care professionals and governmental agencies
today is that of domestic violence. Domestic violence encompasses any violence that is inflicted
upon one family member by another family member. Thus, domestic violence can be described as
spouse abuse, child abuse, sibling abuse, or elder abuse. Most authorities suggest that domestic
violence is typically expressed in violence against women and children. Such acts of violence can
involve health care professionals in the treatment of physical injuries, the psychological impact upon
the victim, or the aggressive behavior of the abuser. Often governmental agencies are called upon to
investigate such matters to ensure the safety of the victims or to...show more content...
Its companion offense, gross violation of integrity, protects children and other close relatives. The
new offense means that if a man commits certain criminal acts (e.g., assault, unlawful threat or
coercion, sexual or other molestation, or sexual exploitation) against a woman to whom he is or has
been married or with whom he is or has been cohabiting and seriously damages her
selfconfidence, the courts can sentence him for gross violation of the woman's
integrity in addition to sentencing him on each traditional crime, such as aggravated assault. In this
way, the new legislation allows the courts to take into account the entire situation of the abused
woman and increase the offender's punishment to fit the severity and frequency of the acts. (p. 19)
Of course, the crime of domestic violence is also prevalent in the United States. In fact, in recent
years, many famous individuals have been accused of abusing their wife. For example, film
director John Singleton, former football player and actor Jim Brown, and rock musician Tommy
Lee have all appeared in court to face charges of such crimes.
The most prominent forms of domestic violence are spouse abuse, particularly with the wife as
target, and abuse of children. In some cases, both types are occurring

Domestic Violence
For a long time, there was a belief that situations that arose within the family were solely a private
matter. Women were treated as possessions of men and the law did not legally recognise the rape of
a wife by her husband. In recent times, society's attitudes towards domestic violence have changed
considerably. Once, the only avenue that existed for victims of domestic violence was through
criminal law. Today, all states of Australia have enacted various forms of domestic violence
legislation to deal with this growing problem within our communities.
The Domestic and Family Violence Protection Act 2012 (Qld) provides a broader and more
contemporary definition of what constitutes domestic and family violence. The legal definition of

A domestic violence order can come in one of two forms: a temporary protection order or a
protection order. A temporary protection order is an order made in the period before a court
decides whether to make a protection order for the benefit of the aggrieved. A protection order is
made by a magistrate when they make a final decision. A domestic violence order usually expires
after a period of 1 to 2 years at which point the aggrieved can apply to the court to extend the order if
fear of the respondent or the likelihood of violence is still present (NCSMC, 2012).
Often, the police are the first to be called to instances of domestic violence. Under the Domestic and
Family Violence Protection Act, police now have the ability to issue a police protection order.
Unlike a protection order, which requires waiting until the courts issue it, the police protection order
can be issued

Essay about Domestic Violence In Police Homes
As all officers know, domestic violence is a serious problem throughout the United States.
Unfortunately, it is also a crime that some officers perpetrate in their own homes. When officers–
who are sworn to protect and serve in their communities – abuse their power and control at home,
they violate the law. When this occurs, the victim, the family, the agency, and the entire community
suffer. Officers are trained to maintain control, to use weapons, and to justify their use of force on
the job. Officers also need to understand, however, that the core behaviors that make them effective
on the job must not be used against family members and intimate partners (University of Florida).
The International Chiefs of Police (IACP) states that the...show more content...
Many of the victims, as well as abusers, experience same issues that are faced by civilians.
Though society looks to law enforcement to intervene in domestic violence situations, law
enforcement officers themselves may also be experiencing like situations at home. Law
enforcement officers may be abusers as well as victims of domestic violence. It is essential that
they receive the same help as civilians receive. It is not something to be ashamed of; it is a serious
problem that needs special attention. Abusers show similar signs and causes, as well as victims
experience similar abusers and abuse. What is the truth of officer–involved domestic violence?
Questions to consider in researching such a topic include: What can be classified as domestic
violence? How are civilian and officer– involved domestic violence similar and different? What are
warning sign of domestic violence? When should one report domestic violence? How can a law
enforcement officer be a victim? Why do victims remain in the abusive relationships? How does
officer–involved domestic violence impact the victim, the children, the agency, and the community?
Qualitative methods may include focus groups, in–depth interviews, and reviews of documents.
Primary inductive process is used to formulate theory or hypotheses. The qualitative method is more
subjective, it describes a problem or condition from the point of view of those experiencing it. It is

Essay Domestic Violence Against Men
The first reaction upon hearing about the topic of battered men, for many people, is that of
incredulity. Battered husbands are a topic for jokes (such as the cartoon image of a woman chasing
her husband with a rolling–pin). One researcher noted that wives were the perpetrators in 73% of the
depictions of domestic violence in newspaper comics (Saenger 1963).
Battered husbands have historically been either ignored or subjected to ridicule and abuse. In
18th–century France, a battered husband "was made to wear an outlandish outfit and ride backwards
around the village on a donkey" (Steinmetz & Lucca 1988).
Even those of us who like to consider ourselves liberated and open–minded often have a difficult

More recently, in a study of spousal homicide in the period from 1976 to 1985, it was found that
there was an overall ratio of 1.3:1.0 of murdered wives to murdered husbands, and that "Black
husbands were at greater risk of spouse homicide victimization than Black wives or White spouses
of either sex" (Mercy & Saltzman 1989)]
The subject of husband–battering had finally been addressed, but not to the great satisfaction of
anyone. Although it had finally been shown that there was violence being perpetrated both by wives
and husbands, there was no information about relative frequency or severity, or who initiated the
abuse and who was acting in self defense. Furthermore, some researchers became concerned that the
use of police or social services references in choosing subjects to study might be biasing the results.
In short, they recognized that battered husbands might be nearly invisible next to their female
counterparts.
In 1976, for instance, in a critique of the Curtis report (which found women less likely to assault,
but as likely to murder, as men), Wilt & Bannon wrote that "nonfatal violence committed by women
against men is less likely to be reported to the police than is violence by men against women; thus,
women assaulters who come to the attention of the police are likely to be those who have produced
a fatal result."

"Violence may be a behavioral alternative that the batterer should take responsibility. No language

Also, "Injured private parts, breasts, or abdomens are especially common in abused women who are

homosexual relationships, not just in heterosexual relationships. One statistic states that "the
prevalence of domestic violence among Gay and Lesbian couples is approximately 33%" (ABA 2).
Unfortunately, homosexuals receive fewer protections even though they have

My Experience with Domestic Violence Essay
I would shut my eyes because I knew what was coming. And before I shut my eyes, I held my
breath, like a swimmer ready to dive into a deep ocean. I could never watch when his hands came
toward me; I only patiently waited for the harsh sound of the strike. I would always remember his
eyes right before I closed my own: pupils wide with rage, cold, and dark eyebrows clenched with
hate. When it finally came, I never knew which fist hit me first, or which blow sent me to my knees
because I could not bring myself to open my eyes. They were closed because I didn't want to see
what he had promised he would never do again. In the darkness of my mind, I could escape to a

It is difficult for a person to understand the feeling of not having any control over his or her body,
until he or she has experienced domestic violence. When I came to realize that I had no say over
my body, and the only thing left to soar free was my soul, I learned that it was a cruel world out
there. However, after two years of unforgivable pain and torment, I decided to get my life back. I
went to counseling sessions that my close friend set up for me. The counselor helped me realize
that I needed to come to terms with the harsh reality of what was happening. After that, I learned
that the abuse was not my fault. This was where I realized that I was not alone, and that I did not
deserve the pain.
Even now, I sometimes think he won, though, because he sleeps peacefully at night, while I wake
up trembling with swollen eyes. But then I stop, absorb everything around me, and look at the
world in another perspective. I look in the mirror now and see a different person, a woman who has
survived the unimaginable.
Some may judge, but it is so easy to fall into this trap. I was so alone, just as I know that there are
so many women out there suffering from domestic violence who feel that no one understands. We
must be strong, confident, and recognize our worth, in order to take hold of our lives. Domestic
violence is a vicious cycle that occurs

The abuser sometimes uses this tactic as a punishment. "Financial abuse is the use or misuse,
without the partner's freely given consent, of the financial or other monetary resources of the
partner or of the partnership." (Types of Domestic Abuse). The abuser will keep the victim(s) away
from their jobs, which will cause them to lose money and eventually get fired. The abuser will also
create conflict with the victim's coworkers. They will also take the victim's credit cards and will also
take control of their bank account(s) and control their spending. "Identity abuse is using personal
characteristics to demean, manipulate and control the partner...tactics overlap with other forms of

ageism, able–ism, beauty–ism, as well as homophobia." (Type of Domestic Abuse). The abuser will
stereotype the victims(s) by their ethnicity, race, sexuality, or gender. They will also humiliate them
and judge them by their behavior and how they do things. This will also lower the victim's self
esteem and self confidence. These types of abuse are very dangerous psychologically and physically.
In order to help stop this crime, people will need to be educated on domestic violence and the ways
to help prevent this from happening. Educating people on domestic violence can

Domestic Violence Awareness
Each month 1 to 3 women will experience domestic violence or also known as intimate partner
violence. These women stand a very high death rate than any other leading cause of death for
women of all ages. It's a crime and a problem that is more than likely never addressed like it should
be. Most often these victims will not speak out on their abuse or attacks. "Everyday 3 or more
women are murdered in a domestic violence attack by their boyfriends or husbands"("Domestic
Violence Information."). Other than muggings, rapes, and car accidents there is only one leading
cause of injury to women and that's domestic violence. Even down to our teens it is becoming a
very big problem. The worst part about domestic violence is the lack of attention we give it. 9
times out of 10 the victims will not speak out on their attacks caused by their partner. They may
be traumatized, scared, or even feel like they are the cause of their attacks and abuse. But lets be
honest no human being deserves to be beat to death or even harmed for that matter. You do not
always have to be married for domestic violence to occur. It can be simply your boyfriend or
friend that you are in a relationship with. We all ask the question; what causes husbands and
boyfriends to attack their wives and girlfriends? Is it the environment or house whole they were
raised in? But the real question that what an answer to is. What are we going to do to put an end to it?

Ellie and I lay in our beds, neither one of us knew what to say. In the other room, our host parents

where the infant will focus its attention on the non–gratifying object and over time develops a huge
backlog of neglectful thoughts and resentment (Celani 63). Fairbairn?s reference to an ?object? is
referring to the mother or father in charge of taking care of the child at hand. In this quote he
comments on the mother because at the time of this theory it was primarily the mother?s
responsibility to care for the children. As the child grows, the needs for fulfillment will be
displaced from the parent to a future lover (63). This psychological damage can be devastating and
the child will eventually have to deal with her internal pain. She will take the depiction of the parent
that has hurt her and internalize it, turning that image into an idea that she can treasure and count on
as her happy place in times of need (63). The depth of internalization depends on the level of
neglect. It is difficult for a child to stay attached to a parent that she fears and hates the most (64).
Splitting of the unified ego allows the child to ?protect its hope for love by objects in the future,?
similarly to a person with split personalities, only internalized (65). ?The child?s sub ego that relates

CHAPTER 1
1.) Based on your reading of this chapter, how would you define family violence?
Family violence occurs in many forms; the most prominent are domestic violence, child abuse, and
elder abuse. Family violence affects many persons at some point in their life and constitutes the
majority of violent acts in our society. Family violence requires that a relationship exist between the
parties before, during and after the incident of the family violence. Family violence differs within

Some abusers learned to abuse from their parents. Their early history may have consisted of
receiving abuse themselves and/or seeing others abused, and this abuse becomes a normal condition
of life for them. By choosing to be the aggressor and abuser, the abuser may get their first sense of
taking control over their own destiny and not being at the mercy of others.
Chapter 2
1.) Although young children are often prone to bruising because of their level of activity,
questionable bruising should always be reported. It is not the physician's responsibility to decide if
it is abuse but, it is the physician responsibility to act on his or her concerns and do something
about it, which would be to report it . Furthermore, physicians mandated reporters and they are
designated as such because they are in a position to receive information that a child is or may be at
risk, and to pass this information on to the agencies that can intervene to protect the child. Whether
the physician knows the parents or have visited them in their home, this should not be considered as
a factor in a child abuse case; the goal of mandatory reporting is to protect children. By protecting
one child in a home, the mandatory reporter may also be protecting other children in the home. This

Cause And Effect Essay On Domestic Violence
According to Roxanne Edwards, domestic abuse affects 3%–5% of current adult relationships in the
United States, including more than 2 million women. Jealousy, envy, drug abuse and alcohol,
including low self–esteem, poor mental health, and anger are some problematic causes contributing
to domestic violence.
Domestic violence is often triggered by sexual jealousy and accusations . People don't normally
experience jealousy unless they feel threatened by another person or entity. When offenders sense
attention and/or attraction from a third party, they feel this uneasiness that we call jealousy. In
romantic relationships, jealousy is typically triggered by a third party. They do not have to
actually pose a threat; the mere perception of a threat is enough to get the wheels of jealousy
turning. Just like every other emotion and relationship problem , a adult whose parents modeled
jealousy may tend more toward jealousy only because that's all they know and see as a child
growing up. Certain traits such as anxiety can also affect jealousy. Some individuals who tend to
worry are more likely to worry about losing a loved one or their relationship with that individual .
Surprisingly, according to SSRI Stories prescription drugs , antidepressants and antianxiety
medications are often involved in cases of domestic violence. The linkage between alcohol and drug
use on the one hand and domestic violence on the other , would strongly include that there must be a

Domestic violence Essay examples
Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior which involves violence or other abuse by one person
against another in a domestic context, such as in marriage or cohabitation. Intimate partner violence
is domestic violence against a spouse or other intimate partner. Domestic violence can take place in
heterosexual or same–sex relationships. Domestic violence can take a number of forms including
physical, emotional, verbal, economic and sexual abuse, which can range from subtle, coercive
forms to marital rape and to violent physical abuse that results in disfigurement or death. Globally, a
wife or female partner is more commonly the victim of domestic violence, though the victim can also
be the male partner, or both partners may engage in...show more content...
The World Health Organization states that globally, about 38% of murders of women are committed
by an intimate partner. In the Middle East and other parts of the world, planned domestic homicides,
or honor killings, are carried out due to the belief of the perpetrators that the victim has brought
dishonor upon the family or community. According to Human Rights Watch, honor killings are
generally performed against women for "refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the
victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce–even from an abusive husband–or committing
adultery," or exhibiting behavior perceived to have dishonored the family. In some parts of the
world, where there is a strong social expectation for a woman to be a virgin prior to marriage, a
bride may be subjected to extreme violence, including an honor killing, if she is deemed not to be
a virgin on her wedding night due to the absence of blood. Bride burning or dowry killing is a
form of domestic violence in which a newly married woman is killed at home by her husband or
husband's family due to their dissatisfaction over the dowry provided by her family. The act is
often a result of demands for more or prolonged dowry after the marriage. Dowry violence is most
common in South Asia, especially in India. In 2011, the National Crime Records Bureau reported

  • 2. Persuasive Essay On Domestic Violence A person has never understood how you could abuse the person you love. Some people find it amusing to hit on someone that will always be by their side. Who would take their anger out on someone so innocent that hasn't done anything wrong? It's a question no one can really answer, but hopefully people will learn a lot from this paper. Anyone's cry for help, is not a laughing matter because they seriously could be in danger. Domestic Violence is a very touchy subject for anyone, whether you are a victim or a witness. According to www.merriam–webster.com, domestic violence is the inflicting of physical injury by one family or household member on another; also, a repeated or habitual pattern of such behavior. One in three women will experience domestic violence at some point in their lifetime. According to the Violence Policy Center, 1,388 women were murdered by men they knew in 2014, and 870 of those murders were committed by an intimate partner of the victim. (www.domesticshelters.org Abusive Red Flags Everyone Should Know). Also, www.domesticshelters.org states, if your partner has a violent temper and quickly changes moods, pressures you to move fast in a relationship, or pushes for immediate commitment, is continuously jealous and possessive, then he or she is most likely abusive. Domestic violence is the most overlooked, misunderstood offense. Anyone can go through it, but many can't endure the pain it brings. According to (www.helpguide.org), people whose partners abuse them physically and sexually are at a higher risk of being seriously injured or killed. Most people wonder why doesn't the victim leave the relationship, well it is not that easy. "The question, 'Why does she stay?' is code for some people for, it's her fault for staying,' as if domestic violence victims intentionally choose to fall in love with men intent upon destroying us" –Leslie Morgan Steiner (www.azquotes.com). An abuser will do anything and everything he or she can to make you feel bad about yourself or defective in some way (www.helpguide.org). The abuser may use intimidation tactics such as make threatening looks or gestures, smashing things in front of you, destroying property, hurting your pets, or putting their weapons on Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Domestic Violence in America Essay Domestic abuse in the United States is a large–scale and complex social and health problem. The home is the most violent setting in America today (Lay, 1994). Sadly enough, the majority of people who are murdered are not likely killed by a stranger during a hold–up or similar crime but are killed by someone they know. Not surprisingly, the Center for Disease Control and prevention has identified interpersonal violence as a major public health problem (Velson–Friedrich, 1994). Current estimates suggest that three to four million women are the victims of physical abuse by their intimate partners (Harris & Cook, 1994). According to the FBI, some form of domestic violence occurs in half of the homes in the United States at least once a...show more content... For example, beginning in 1992, the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Organizations, required that all accredited hospitals implement policies and procedures for identifying, treating and referring victims of abuse (Mason, 1993). This included in–service training programs for staff members of their emergency departments and ambulatory care facilities (Mason, 1993). In 1994, 83 organizations, including the American Nurses' Association and the American Bar Association, met to identify gaps and barriers between the health care delivery and criminal justice systems in dealing with family violence cases. Among their recommendations were the following: a mechanism for community professional coordination in assessment to maximize family safety; the creation of community–based family violence coordination councils; and the need to establish, in every community, a comprehensive, culturally sensitive, and accessible intervention system for family violence that links health, justice, mental health, social service, and educational systems (Stanley, 1994). In addition, the American Medical Association (AMA) published guidelines for Health care professionals to use in identifying domestic violence victims. Domestic Violence Against Women Essay The United Nations Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women (1993) defines violence against women as "any act of gender–based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life." (UN General Assembly 1993). It is violence in private life that comprises domestic violence against women. Also called Intimate Partner Abuse and Family Violence, it is a global issue that cuts across all geographic, social, cultural and ethnic boundaries. The life expectancy at birth for the population is 66 years, infant mortality is 62 per 1000 live births and the maternal mortality is 260 deaths per 100,000 live births ( UNDP 2011). In addition to the globally prevalent forms of domestic violence , women in Pakistan also suffer from forms of violence carried out in the name of tradition, culture and religion. Honour killing is an old tradition which involves a male member of the family killing a female relative if she is suspected of tarnishing the family's honour. In most cases the executor is the husband, the father or a brother( Minallah and Durrani, 2009). Stove burning is a form of dowry killing prevalent in the province of Punjab, mostly in the urban areas. Married women are burned by the husband or his family as a punishment for not providing a rich dowry, not producing a son, not allowing the husband another wife or as a result of long running disputes. Acid throwing, particularly on the face, may be committed to avenge refusal of sexual advances and alleged disloyalty by a wife or female partner. It is done to punish the wife for bringing dishonor to the husband. Marriage( Nikaah) to Koran( The holy Book of Muslims) is an old custom where a girl is forced into celibacy to keep the family wealth intact. It is more prevalent in the Sindh province among the wealthy feudal lords ( waderas). Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. One of the most complicated issues facing health care professionals and governmental agencies today is that of domestic violence. Domestic violence encompasses any violence that is inflicted upon one family member by another family member. Thus, domestic violence can be described as spouse abuse, child abuse, sibling abuse, or elder abuse. Most authorities suggest that domestic violence is typically expressed in violence against women and children. Such acts of violence can involve health care professionals in the treatment of physical injuries, the psychological impact upon the victim, or the aggressive behavior of the abuser. Often governmental agencies are called upon to investigate such matters to ensure the safety of the victims or to...show more content... Its companion offense, gross violation of integrity, protects children and other close relatives. The new offense means that if a man commits certain criminal acts (e.g., assault, unlawful threat or coercion, sexual or other molestation, or sexual exploitation) against a woman to whom he is or has been married or with whom he is or has been cohabiting and seriously damages her selfconfidence, the courts can sentence him for gross violation of the woman's integrity in addition to sentencing him on each traditional crime, such as aggravated assault. In this way, the new legislation allows the courts to take into account the entire situation of the abused woman and increase the offender's punishment to fit the severity and frequency of the acts. (p. 19) Of course, the crime of domestic violence is also prevalent in the United States. In fact, in recent years, many famous individuals have been accused of abusing their wife. For example, film director John Singleton, former football player and actor Jim Brown, and rock musician Tommy Lee have all appeared in court to face charges of such crimes. The most prominent forms of domestic violence are spouse abuse, particularly with the wife as target, and abuse of children. In some cases, both types are occurring Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Domestic Violence For a long time, there was a belief that situations that arose within the family were solely a private matter. Women were treated as possessions of men and the law did not legally recognise the rape of a wife by her husband. In recent times, society's attitudes towards domestic violence have changed considerably. Once, the only avenue that existed for victims of domestic violence was through criminal law. Today, all states of Australia have enacted various forms of domestic violence legislation to deal with this growing problem within our communities. A temporary protection order is an order made in the period before a court decides whether to make a protection order for the benefit of the aggrieved. A protection order is made by a magistrate when they make a final decision. A domestic violence order usually expires after a period of 1 to 2 years at which point the aggrieved can apply to the court to extend the order if fear of the respondent or the likelihood of violence is still present (NCSMC, 2012). • 7. Essay about Domestic Violence In Police Homes As all officers know, domestic violence is a serious problem throughout the United States. Unfortunately, it is also a crime that some officers perpetrate in their own homes. When officers– who are sworn to protect and serve in their communities – abuse their power and control at home, they violate the law. When this occurs, the victim, the family, the agency, and the entire community suffer. Officers are trained to maintain control, to use weapons, and to justify their use of force on the job. Officers also need to understand, however, that the core behaviors that make them effective on the job must not be used against family members and intimate partners (University of Florida). The International Chiefs of Police (IACP) states that the...show more content... Many of the victims, as well as abusers, experience same issues that are faced by civilians. Though society looks to law enforcement to intervene in domestic violence situations, law enforcement officers themselves may also be experiencing like situations at home. Law enforcement officers may be abusers as well as victims of domestic violence. It is essential that they receive the same help as civilians receive. It is not something to be ashamed of; it is a serious problem that needs special attention. Abusers show similar signs and causes, as well as victims experience similar abusers and abuse. What is the truth of officer–involved domestic violence? Questions to consider in researching such a topic include: What can be classified as domestic violence? How are civilian and officer– involved domestic violence similar and different? What are warning sign of domestic violence? When should one report domestic violence? How can a law enforcement officer be a victim? Why do victims remain in the abusive relationships? How does officer–involved domestic violence impact the victim, the children, the agency, and the community? • 8. Essay Domestic Violence Against Men The first reaction upon hearing about the topic of battered men, for many people, is that of incredulity. Battered husbands are a topic for jokes (such as the cartoon image of a woman chasing her husband with a rolling–pin). One researcher noted that wives were the perpetrators in 73% of the depictions of domestic violence in newspaper comics (Saenger 1963). Battered husbands have historically been either ignored or subjected to ridicule and abuse. In 18th–century France, a battered husband "was made to wear an outlandish outfit and ride backwards around the village on a donkey" (Steinmetz & Lucca 1988). Even those of us who like to consider ourselves liberated and open–minded often have a difficult time even imagining that husband...show more content... More recently, in a study of spousal homicide in the period from 1976 to 1985, it was found that there was an overall ratio of 1.3:1.0 of murdered wives to murdered husbands, and that "Black husbands were at greater risk of spouse homicide victimization than Black wives or White spouses of either sex" (Mercy & Saltzman 1989)] The subject of husband–battering had finally been addressed, but not to the great satisfaction of anyone. Although it had finally been shown that there was violence being perpetrated both by wives and husbands, there was no information about relative frequency or severity, or who initiated the abuse and who was acting in self defense. Furthermore, some researchers became concerned that the use of police or social services references in choosing subjects to study might be biasing the results. In short, they recognized that battered husbands might be nearly invisible next to their female counterparts. In 1976, for instance, in a critique of the Curtis report (which found women less likely to assault, but as likely to murder, as men), Wilt & Bannon wrote that "nonfatal violence committed by women against men is less likely to be reported to the police than is violence by men against women; thus, women assaulters who come to the attention of the police are likely to be those who have produced a fatal result." • 10. My Experience with Domestic Violence Essay I would shut my eyes because I knew what was coming. And before I shut my eyes, I held my breath, like a swimmer ready to dive into a deep ocean. I could never watch when his hands came toward me; I only patiently waited for the harsh sound of the strike. I would always remember his eyes right before I closed my own: pupils wide with rage, cold, and dark eyebrows clenched with hate. When it finally came, I never knew which fist hit me first, or which blow sent me to my knees because I could not bring myself to open my eyes. They were closed because I didn't want to see what he had promised he would never do again. In the darkness of my mind, I could escape to a paradise where he would never reach me. It is difficult for a person to understand the feeling of not having any control over his or her body, until he or she has experienced domestic violence. When I came to realize that I had no say over my body, and the only thing left to soar free was my soul, I learned that it was a cruel world out there. However, after two years of unforgivable pain and torment, I decided to get my life back. I went to counseling sessions that my close friend set up for me. The counselor helped me realize that I needed to come to terms with the harsh reality of what was happening. After that, I learned that the abuse was not my fault. This was where I realized that I was not alone, and that I did not deserve the pain. Even now, I sometimes think he won, though, because he sleeps peacefully at night, while I wake up trembling with swollen eyes. But then I stop, absorb everything around me, and look at the world in another perspective. I look in the mirror now and see a different person, a woman who has survived the unimaginable. Some may judge, but it is so easy to fall into this trap. I was so alone, just as I know that there are so many women out there suffering from domestic violence who feel that no one understands. We didn't know what about, but we knew it was serious. Then we heard a "THWACK" followed by silence. Ellie and I sat up in our beds and looked at each other, I could tell she was as scared as I was. "Was that? Did he just?" she asked me. Then the arguing started back up again. We calmed back down until we heard it again. "THWACK" We knew then, the noise we heard, was him beating her. We got up, our hearts racing; neither of us knew what to do. We got our nerves together to go get help. When we opened the door to our room we saw the children sitting on the couch crying out for their mother. I could see the fear in their face and I knew something needed to change. This experience was one of the scariest in my life. This was the first time I every experienced someone being physically abused. Fairbairn?s reference to an ?object? is referring to the mother or father in charge of taking care of the child at hand. In this quote he comments on the mother because at the time of this theory it was primarily the mother?s responsibility to care for the children. As the child grows, the needs for fulfillment will be displaced from the parent to a future lover (63). This psychological damage can be devastating and the child will eventually have to deal with her internal pain. She will take the depiction of the parent that has hurt her and internalize it, turning that image into an idea that she can treasure and count on as her happy place in times of need (63). The depth of internalization depends on the level of neglect. It is difficult for a child to stay attached to a parent that she fears and hates the most (64). Splitting of the unified ego allows the child to ?protect its hope for love by objects in the future,? similarly to a person with split personalities, only internalized (65). ?The child?s sub ego that relates exclusively to the frustrating and rejecting object was called the anti–libidinal ego,? by Fairbairn, if the child looses her mother in reality a substitute figure is needed, but if Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Their early history may have consisted of receiving abuse themselves and/or seeing others abused, and this abuse becomes a normal condition of life for them. By choosing to be the aggressor and abuser, the abuser may get their first sense of taking control over their own destiny and not being at the mercy of others. Chapter 2 1.) Although young children are often prone to bruising because of their level of activity, questionable bruising should always be reported. It is not the physician's responsibility to decide if it is abuse but, it is the physician responsibility to act on his or her concerns and do something about it, which would be to report it . Furthermore, physicians mandated reporters and they are designated as such because they are in a position to receive information that a child is or may be at risk, and to pass this information on to the agencies that can intervene to protect the child. Whether the physician knows the parents or have visited them in their home, this should not be considered as a factor in a child abuse case; the goal of mandatory reporting is to protect children. By protecting one child in a home, the mandatory reporter may also be protecting other children in the home. This may also Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 20. Cause And Effect Essay On Domestic Violence According to Roxanne Edwards, domestic abuse affects 3%–5% of current adult relationships in the United States, including more than 2 million women. Jealousy, envy, drug abuse and alcohol, including low self–esteem, poor mental health, and anger are some problematic causes contributing to domestic violence. Domestic violence is often triggered by sexual jealousy and accusations . People don't normally experience jealousy unless they feel threatened by another person or entity. When offenders sense attention and/or attraction from a third party, they feel this uneasiness that we call jealousy. In romantic relationships, jealousy is typically triggered by a third party. They do not have to actually pose a threat; the mere perception of a threat is enough to get the wheels of jealousy turning. Just like every other emotion and relationship problem , a adult whose parents modeled jealousy may tend more toward jealousy only because that's all they know and see as a child growing up. Certain traits such as anxiety can also affect jealousy. Some individuals who tend to worry are more likely to worry about losing a loved one or their relationship with that individual . Surprisingly, according to SSRI Stories prescription drugs , antidepressants and antianxiety medications are often involved in cases of domestic violence. The linkage between alcohol and drug use on the one hand and domestic violence on the other , would strongly include that there must be a cause–and–effect Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In the Middle East and other parts of the world, planned domestic homicides, or honor killings, are carried out due to the belief of the perpetrators that the victim has brought dishonor upon the family or community. According to Human Rights Watch, honor killings are generally performed against women for "refusing to enter into an arranged marriage, being the victim of a sexual assault, seeking a divorce–even from an abusive husband–or committing adultery," or exhibiting behavior perceived to have dishonored the family. In some parts of the world, where there is a strong social expectation for a woman to be a virgin prior to marriage, a bride may be subjected to extreme violence, including an honor killing, if she is deemed not to be a virgin on her wedding night due to the absence of blood.
