• If you are a MCC student , you will not need to
submit any transcripts, unless you are taking a
course from another college and seek transfer
credit.
4. General Application
• If you are not a MCC student you will need to fill out
a general admission application to MCC. This can
be completed online or in person.
• If you are not a MCC student you will need to send
in official transcripts for colleges or schools you have
attended. This will be reviewed for possible credit by
the Registrar.
5. Required Courses
You must have completed the following courses in
order to apply to Associates Degree Nursing Program.
• ENG 111- Expository Writing
• RED 090 – Improved College Reading
• MAT 080 – Intermediate Algebra
• BIO 163 – Basic Anatomy & Physiology
• CMH 092- Fundamentals of Chemistry
All MAT , BIO, and CHM courses must have been
completed within 5 years of application.
6. Substitutions for Required
Courses
• If you have not taken the courses and would like to
receive credit for ENG, MAT, or RED courses you will
need to meet the minimum requirements on the
appropriate placement test. Approved placement
tests include ; ACCUPLACER (CPT), SAT, ACT.
7. Substitutions for Required
Courses
• Substitutions for BIO 163 include BIO 165, Anatomy
and Physiology I, or passing the BIO proficiency
exam, which is outlined in the application.
• CHM 092- Completion of Chemistry in high school
with a grade of 77 or better . Completion of CHM
131 or CHM 151 or the Chemistry proficiency exam.
8. GPA & CNA
• You must have and maintain an overall GPA of 2.5 or
higher in all post-secondary coursework completed.
CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT
• Students who wish to apply to the Associate Degree
Nursing Program must have completed or be enrolled in
a certified nursing assistant course with a state approved
curriculum such as the high school Allied Health Sciences
Program or a community college course.
• Certification must be obtained and the student must be
listed on the NC Nurse Aide Registry prior to the end of
May to remain qualified to enter the Associate Degree
Nursing Program.
10. Program Application
• You must submit an Online application for the
Associate Degree Nursing Program during the
stated admissions period. This can be found on our
main webpage at www.mayland.edu .
11. TEAS
• Once you have completed the online application
you must take the Test of Essential Academic
Standards ( TEAS). You must score proficient . You
can sign up for the TEAS in the online application.
12. TEAS
• The TEAS consists of four parts that ask you to answer
multiple-choice questions covering the following:
• Reading – paragraph comprehension, passage
comprehension, and inferences/conclusions
• Math – whole numbers, metric conversion, fractions,
decimals, algebraic equations, percentages, and
ratio/proportion
• Science –science reasoning, science knowledge,
biology, chemistry, anatomy, physiology, basic physical
principles, and general science
• English and Language Usage – punctuation, grammar,
sentence structure, contextual words, and spelling
13. TEAS
When Testing students may not have any of the
following items during test administration:
• Food, drinks, or candy
• Textbooks or reference books of any kind
• Sunglasses, hats, or a hooded sweatshirt
• Music (including CD players, iPods, MP3 players, cell
phones, etc.)
• Communication devices such as cell phones,
pagers, PDA or palm pilots, etc.
14. Register & Pay
• TO PAY FOR THE TEAS:
• Pay the MCC Cashier $35.00 – bring receipt with
you on the test date to be admitted. Payment must
be submitted by application deadline.
15. Register & Pay
• Students must visit the ATI website and make an
account with a user ID and password at
www.atitesting.com. Write that username and
password down, and bring it with you when you
test.
• Arrive 15 minutes before the test to locate the room
and for check-in procedures and to log-on to the
ATI website using your username and password.
• The length of the test is approximately three and
one-half hours. The test will be proctored in a
computer lab.

17. Paperwork
• As outlined in the admissions packet, you must submit
any paperwork that is required. This may include :
• Proof of Residency
• CNA certification
• Employer Information
Failure to submit any paper work that is required of you by
the deadline will result in an incomplete application.
18. Take the TEAS
• Please attend the testing date that you signed up
for in the online application. Only under emergency
situations can you move your test date. This must be
approved by the Health Sciences ARA.
• You will need to arrive early for the test. If you arrive
late you will not be admitted into the test.
• After completing the TEAS your score will show up
on your computer. The score sheet will not be
printed. You can view your scores any time by
logging into your ATI account.
19. Selection Process
• All documentation is to be turned in by the packet
deadline.
• Applicants with completed files will be considered
for admission into the nursing programs that begin
fall semester .
• Points are totaled for each applicant and placed in
rank order, highest to lowest.

Points will be awarded for the following :
• TEAS
• GPA
• Residency
• Prior Healthcare Experience
• BIO 165
• BIO 166
• BIO 175
• HUM 115
• Orientation
21. Points
Breakdown of points
• TEAS- The Adjusted Individual Total percentage score is used for
points. If a student has taken the TEAS more than once in the past
year, the highest score of the previous two tests will be used.
• GPA- your current GPA as of completion of spring semester
• Residency -a resident of Mitchell, Avery or Yancey County will
receive two points toward admission.
• Prior Healthcare experience -2 points will be added for one of the
following: Six months full-time or one year part-time prior
healthcare experience as a certified healthcare provider (CNA,
CMA, Paramedic, EMT, PTA, etc.)High school Allied Health
Sciences II with a grade of 77 or better within the past five years
• Orientation- 2 points will be added if you complete the online
nursing orientation.
22. Points
BIO 165 , BIO 166, BIO 175
• Students who complete BIO 165, Anatomy &
Physiology I, BIO 166, Anatomy & Physiology II, and
BIO 175 Microbiology within five years of admission
will receive points towards admission.
HUM 115
• Student who complete HUM 115, Critical Thinking
within 7 years of admission will receive points
towards admission
The points towards admission will be determined by
the grade earned in each course according to the
following scale: A = 4 points; B = 3 points; C = 2 points.
23. Final Transcripts
• If you have taken any other course at another
school during the spring semester you must submit
the official transcript from that school.
• You will need to notify the Health Sciences ARA.
If you fail to notify the Health Sciences ARA you will not
be admitted into the program.
24. Acceptance
• You will be notified by letter if you have been
accepted into the nursing program by the end of
May.
• You will also be notified by letter if you have not
been selected.
