It’s October and I am 83% through my term
as DMAW President. Thus, I thought you
might be a bit tired of hearing from me. So
as this month’s issue focuses on Marketing to
Members, Donors, Customers and Constitu-
ents, I polled some of the smartest minds I know
for their tips of the trade. Here is what they said:
1. Remember the adage that good development
people espouse — thank before you bank. Tell
your donors how much you appreciate them —
and often! Give them tangible reasons their
gift — regardless of size — is important. ~ Karin
	 Kirchoff, MINDset direct
2. Don’t let your CEO edit your marketing copy. Take the time to explain that it’s not a business
letter. That marketing copy won’t always “sound like him/her.” And make the case for writing
according to direct marketing best practices. ~ Kathy Swayze, Impact Communications
3. Don’t forget about your monthly donors — they still want to hear from you. Send them cus
tomized updates on how their monthly gifts are helping move your mission forward, and their
retention will improve as a result. ~ Pete Carter, CCAH
4. Don’t just test for testing’s sake — be strategic about the variable you’re trying to impact.
And make sure your test is set up to provide statistically valid returns! ~ Kerri Kerr, Avalon
	 Consulting Group.
5. There are still a lot of organizations not keeping their contact data or applying basic demo
graphics. Prices on storage and data have really come down. Maintaining contact data and
demographics should be a standard operating procedure. ~ Rick Malchow, IDM
6. Give donors an action to take besides giving to get them engaged. ~ Farra Trompeter,
	 Big Duck
7. Call out and thank your long loyal supporters with special language. It doesn’t have to be a
separate package or anything fancy, but regularly giving the best of the best some love will
improve retention. ~ Mikaela King, Defenders of Wildlife
8. Be authentic. You can still be authentic about your mission and your impact, you can talk
about your complex mission and case for support and raise money. You don’t need to dumb
down your message so far that donors don’t have a clear idea about what you’re actually do
ing and the impact you are making. Being authentic will bring in a better donor! ~ Allison
	 Porter, Avalon Consulting Group
If you have some tips to share, please tweet them @DMAW #MarketingTips or post them on
Facebook or LinkedIn.

P.S. Speaking of Members, as a DMAW Member in good standing, I hope you will
continue to promote the benefits of DMAW Membership to others — and as it is
our 60th Anniversary, there are many great benefits and discounts to share — so
	 please spread the word.

BY JAMIE NATELSON Postmaster: Send address changes to DMAW Marketing AdVents, 11709 Bowman Green Drive, Reston, VA 20190-3501; email info@dmaw.org • website www.dmaw.org It’s October and I am 83% through my term as DMAW President. Thus, I thought you might be a bit tired of hearing from me. So as this month’s issue focuses on Marketing to Members, Donors, Customers and Constitu- ents, I polled some of the smartest minds I know for their tips of the trade. Here is what they said: 1. Remember the adage that good development people espouse — thank before you bank. Tell your donors how much you appreciate them — and often! Give them tangible reasons their gift — regardless of size — is important. ~ Karin Kirchoff, MINDset direct 2. Don’t let your CEO edit your marketing copy. Take the time to explain that it’s not a business letter. That marketing copy won’t always “sound like him/her.” And make the case for writing according to direct marketing best practices. ~ Kathy Swayze, Impact Communications 3. Don’t forget about your monthly donors — they still want to hear from you. Send them cus tomized updates on how their monthly gifts are helping move your mission forward, and their retention will improve as a result. ~ Pete Carter, CCAH 4. Don’t just test for testing’s sake — be strategic about the variable you’re trying to impact. And make sure your test is set up to provide statistically valid returns! ~ Kerri Kerr, Avalon Consulting Group. 5. There are still a lot of organizations not keeping their contact data or applying basic demo graphics. Prices on storage and data have really come down. Maintaining contact data and demographics should be a standard operating procedure. ~ Rick Malchow, IDM 6. Give donors an action to take besides giving to get them engaged. ~ Farra Trompeter, Big Duck 7. Call out and thank your long loyal supporters with special language. It doesn’t have to be a separate package or anything fancy, but regularly giving the best of the best some love will improve retention. ~ Mikaela King, Defenders of Wildlife 8. Be authentic. You can still be authentic about your mission and your impact, you can talk about your complex mission and case for support and raise money. You don’t need to dumb down your message so far that donors don’t have a clear idea about what you’re actually do ing and the impact you are making. Being authentic will bring in a better donor! ~ Allison Porter, Avalon Consulting Group If you have some tips to share, please tweet them @DMAW #MarketingTips or post them on Facebook or LinkedIn.
