5. engineering & design
Matrix employs a range of engineering and design disciplines including mechanical, marine
and composite materials engineers and industrial chemists. Matrix’s in house design and
drafting capability utilises 3D modelling of all parts, Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and
Computation Fluid Dynamic (CFD) analysis. This integrated system enables accurate
modelling of parts, production tooling and interface systems to ensure correct sizing,
calculations and integration of all components.
Hydrostatic Testing
Matrix owns and operates the largest hydrostatic testing facility in the Asia Pacific region
capable of pressure testing to 10,000PSI or 6000msw. The largest chamber is capable
of full scale testing of Riser Buoyancy to 5000PSI or 3000msw. This chamber is fully
instrumented with a 1524mm internal diameter and 6500mm long. Part displacement can
be measured in situ in the chamber or in a purpose built displacement tank.
A second instrumented chamber cabable of testing to 7 .800 PSI or 5000 MSW will
be installed by Q3 2010. This chamber is 1.6m in internal diameter and approximately
7.3m long.

Mechanical Testing
Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) mechanical testing is an integral part of almost every
product design, custom or standard. This may include integration testing of risers,
load testing of buoyancy through members of destructive testing of bend restrictors.
A wide variety of test rigs are available for this purpose.
Materials Testing
Matrix uses in house and third party facilities to pre-qualify or type test materials. Mechanical,
creep, weathering, disbondment and corrosion properties are routinely tested. Typically these
tests are carried out at Matrix’s in house materials testing laboratories.

7. materials & manufacturing
Syntactic Materials Technology
Syntactic foams are a unique family of engineering materials characterised by low density,
high compression strength, low levels of water absorption and thermal conductivity. Over 100
proprietary Syntactic Materials Systems have been developed by the company to offer varying
combinations of density, mechanical properties, thermal properties, processability and cost. All
Matrix monolithic and composite syntactic foam systems are tested to the applicable API and
MIL standards where appropriate.
Composite Materials Technology
Glass, Aramid and Carbon Fibre reinforcements systems are widely used in Matrix’s production
process to create composite materials with a variety of material properties.
Polymer Materials
Matrix utilises a number of thermoset technologies including high performance MDI urethanes,
thermoset epoxies, rubbers and epoxy vinyl esters. These enable a wide degree of versatility
in materials selection, ranging from highly flexible substrates to heat resistant matrices for
thermal applications.
Composite Materials Manufacturing
The company specialises in the production of epoxy based composites. Laminate systems such
as Kear, glass and carbon fibre are routinely employed in production using vacuum infusion
techniques.

Syntactic Foam Manufacturing
The company manufactures a range of proprietary monolithic and composite syntactic foams
to depth rating of 6000msw. Standard, low density and ultra light grades are offered to suit
client specific applications, Autoclave infusion and computer controlled curing processes
ensure consistent product quality.
Polyurethane Elastomer Manufacturing
A number of CNC controlled PU dispensing machines are capable of processing quasi,
hot cast and cold cast polyurethanes.
Rubber Vulcanisation
The company utilises a range of steam operated AutoClaves to hot Neoprene’s, Natural and
EPDM rubber systems.
Thermoplastic Composites
The unique properties of reinforced thermoplastics combined with ease of mass production
open a number of applications for thermoplastic composites in high - medium volume oilfield
products such as clamps, centralizers and other subsea components.
Robotic and CNC Machining
Matrix composite and polymer machining division utilises state of the art six axis Robotic
machining and CNC milling and turning technologies which are ideal for machining syntactic,
PU, phenolic and PS foams, plastics and composite materials. This area is utilised for the
machining of complicated ROV buoyancy blocks, composite machined parts, FRP patterns
and trimming moulded composites.

Marine Riser Buoyancy
Marine Riser Buoyancy Modules are custom built to suit specific operational and riser interface
requirements of the customer. Matrix Marine Riser Buoyancy utilize composite syntactic foam
and advance composite laminate technologies to manufacture robust, lightweight modules
that are capable of incremental depth ratings of up to 4500msw (15000ft). Matrix Marine Riser
Modules are manufactured and tested to the requirements of API 16F .
Marking riser buoyancy “fit for purpose” means taking into account the treatment that the riser
and the buoyancy sees from fit-up, handling, loading and running the riser. Historically, buoyancy
modules can crack, split, loose chunks of material and present operational and safety problems
during their lifetime. Matrix riser buoyancy modules are reinforced to make them considerably
tougher than the industry standard. Features such as double thickness FRP Skins with Kevlar
safety mesh externally as standard makes Matrix modules tougher and safer to use.
