1. DIABETES
Raising glutathione levels. What is its affect in diabetes? Will it actually
lower blood sugar? Dr. Jimmy Gutman who is a physician and has
researched and written extensively on glutathione and its role in diabetes
has said “I don’t think in every case you are going to see a lowering of
blood sugar, by taking this kind of product. Some people have argued
vehemently that their blood sugar has dropped. (Ethel Murray over 300
dropped below 100 in a months time. Lavera Lewis in Oakland had to cut
way back on her insulin and it saved her eyesight.) Yet there are some
people who do not experience a dramatic lowering of blood sugar.
So lowering of blood sugar is not the primary reason it is recommended to
take this product in diabetes.
There are several reasons why it does become important. We have to
ask the question: What is it about diabetics that get them into trouble?
There are two major areas.
First diabetics are by definition immuno-compromised. In other words
diabetics are much more prone to the development of certain infectious
diseases, they get skin infections more easily, bladder infections, lung
infections and sepsis, much more commonly than a healthy individual.
So if we can bolster a diabetics immune system to make them more
resistant against infection, then we can cut down on the amount of
infectious complications.
But really the big, big problem in diabetes has to do with the circulation.
Diabetics are much more prone to arteriosclerosis, heart attack, stroke
and that’s with the large circulation.
When the small circulation is affected you get diabetic blindness,
diabetic kidney disease, diabetic uropathy (a sudden blockage of the flow
of urine from both kidnesys, which can cause the backup of urine and
injure the kidneys).
Raising glutathione will prevent and potentially reverse some of these
processes.

2. What is atherosclerosis? The common term that is used to describe it is
hardening of the arteries. What’s going on is we start to build up this
gummy substance in the lining of our arteries called PLAQUE.
When you continue to lay down this plaque in the arteries, the vessel
gets smaller and smaller and you start to experience symptoms like,
Ischemia, Angina & if the vessel is completely blocked you can experience
a heart attack or a stroke or many other serious complications like that.
It is such a common process in North America, it is almost considered
normal, a natural part of aging. Diabetics are more prone to this because
of the higher sugar levels that are in the blood.
How does raising glutathione levels affect plaque formation or hardening
of the arteries?
One of the major problems that’s involved in plaque formation is a little
fatty substance that everybody’s heard of called cholesterol. Cholesterol
is a circulating fat in our bloodstream that when it gets oxidized, changes
its characteristic and becomes gummier, stickier and speeds up this
process of hardening of the arteries.
Diabetics because of their sugar have higher levels of oxidative stress,
so these fats become oxidized even quicker and they become more
dangerous.
The biochemical that your body makes itself, naturally to slow down this
oxidation of fats and cholesterol is something called glutathione
peroxidase. If you raise glutathione levels you raise glutathione
peroxidase and this allows you to keep these fats in a safer state.
In other words you prevent cholesterol from becoming oxidized. In other
words anybody who is a diabetic, anybody who has heart disease,
anybody who is a smoker, anybody with high blood pressure or with a
positive family history has to pay very close attention to thisl
That is why in diabetes the frontline attack against this disease is not to
bring down blood sugar, the intent is to protect the person from the long
term consequences of this disease.
