8. Practice makes perfect
• Read the passage
Betty the butterfly loved to fly. Her love of flying
was great because she got to see many things.
One day she decided to fly to New York City and
see the sights. Betty found herself hungry and
decided a stop in Central Park would be just the
thing.
9. Making an inference
• Text clue- Betty found herself hungry and
decided a stop in Central Park would be just
the thing.
• Background knowledge- I know butterflies live
off plants or insects.
• I think that she went to the park to eat plants
or insects.
10. Betty the Butterfly
• It was May so Betty ate her fill from all the
flowers and trees that were blooming. Once
she was full she decided to fly up high over
the park to see the view. Betty was flying free
and she decided that the big shiny building
would be her next stop.
11. Making an inference
• Text clue- she decided that the big shiny building
would be her next stop.
• Background Knowledge- Butterflies don’t make
decisions to visit buildings as far as I know.
• I infer the selection is fiction because I don’t think
butterflies decide to travel to New York City.
12. One more time!
She headed toward the Empire State Building.
Next Betty went to the Statue of Liberty where
she met her cousin Benny Bee. Together they
decided they would take a Ferry ride to Ellis
Island. It was great to ride the ferry and catch up
with Benny Bee.
13. Making an inference
• Text clue- she met her cousin Benny Bee.
• Background Knowledge- Bees and butterflies
are not related
• I think the selection is a fiction story because
bees and butterflies are not cousins.
15. Try on your own!
• Bobby Bears paw hurt and he was crying. His
friend Tommy Turtle was trying to help and
saw the thorn in Bobby Bears paw.
16. Text clue
• Bobby Bears paw hurt and he was crying
Background Knowledge
He is sad and crying because pain can make you
cry.
17. Inference
(Choose one)
• I think Bobby Bears paw hurt and that was
making him cry.
• I think Bobby Bear was happy and that made
him cry.
• I think Bobby and Tommy were friends.
18. Try one more inference
• Tommy said “We
should ask Grandpa
Owl what to do?”
Bobby agreed and they
traveled to Owl’s tree
together. Through the
valley, past the pond
and then they climbed
the tree.
19. Text Clue
• Through the valley, past the pond and then
they climbed the tree.
Background Knowledge
Bear, Turtle and Owl must live in the wild, that
seems like a long ways to travel.
20. Infer
(choose one)
• I think Owl must be a good friend.
• I think Bear and turtle traveled a long ways to
see owl.
• I think Tommy Turtle is a good friend.
21. • As soon as owl saw them he said “Hello!”
Tommy and Bobby sat and told owl all about
their problem. Owl smiled wisely and said
“Well my boy just pull it out!” Tommy laughed
and Bobby pulled out the thorn making his
paw feel better.
