1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE
FORMS AND CONVENTIONS OF REAL
MEDIA PRODUCTS?
Evaluation Question 1
2. IDENT
• Before film opening credits, I companies ‘ident’ will appear. Our own media
product uses this convention of a real film to create a professional feel.
3. TITLE
• I also feel that the title of our film continues the usual conventions of a real
film production. This is because ‘Daddy’s Girl’ plays with the theme of horror
as Daddy’s Girl seems sinister. We chose Daddy’s Girl as the girl in the film
gets attacked by her dad and cannot control him. This makes the title effect
as it’s a juxtaposition because she gets hurt by her ‘Daddy’. It is also quite a
vague title which doesn’t give much away about the film plot.
4. LOCATION
• The location of our film opening scene was within a family home. Upon
deciding to create an opening scene for a horror film, we chose to use a
house. This is because a home is somewhere that everyone can relate too. It
makes people put themselves in the actors situation and makes them feel
more scared. In the film ‘Paranormal Activity’ the whole film is based in a
house. This is what helped us with the idea for our opening scene.
5. COSTUME
• In our opening scene we have used the usual conventions in consideration to
the costume aspect. For instance, our victim is wearing pink. Pink is a feminine
colour and connotes vulnerability. It’s almost a symbol of their unavoidable
fate.
6. CAMERA
• I believe that we have used the expected conventions of a horror scene
concerning shot types and camera work. This is because we used a lot of
long-shots and close ups. The long-shots helped the audience see the setting
and the close-ups of the girls face showed her expressions. By using these
conventional shots, we were able to create tension.
7. EDITING
• Within our final opening scene we included a minimal amount of transitions in
order to create quick cuts between each shot. This made the opening scene
fast and made it more scary. We have used continuity editing to allow the
audience to follow along. We have also used shot-reverse-shot to show the
power of the role of the dad over the daughter. At the beginning we used
blank screen editing along with diegetic sound to set the tone. The diegetic
sound used was the sound of rain to create pathetic fallacy.
8. LIGHTING
• I believe that our lighting is very conventional to what is usual seen in horror
films. We filmed at night and so it was all dark. By filming in darkness you can
feel more scared as you can’t see everything clearly. This gives the audience a
feeling of unease as they are unsure what is hiding in the dark.
9. CREDITS
• Our film opening scene features credits which I feel develop the conventions
expected of credits within a horror film. They are created in a blunt and bold
text. Horror films tend to use text which isn’t as contemporary as our own.
However, the credits are fairly subtle having been coloured in white and red.
This uses the conventions of horror credits as they blend into the environment
in an almost ‘bloody’ manner. We also ensured that the credits are the same
font as our title which creates a professional and fluid look.
10. CONCEPT
• To conclude, I think that our general concept is conventional of a typical
horror film. This is because we have used death. Death has been used in many
successful horror films. We believe that our film will appeal to our chosen
audience due to the use of conventions.
