Background information Spain's population density is one of the lowest out of the European countries. They are experiencing a great amount of people immigrating to the city and ruralareas (mainly from South America, North Africa, and Eastern Europe. Spain has a great relationship with France and Portugal. U.S. and Spain are strong buddies in the battle against terrorism.
Background information about franco After the Civil War ended, Franco was in power. (1939) In 1940, Francisco Franco legalized taking babies from their parents if their "moral education" was at risk. (Spain’s stolen babies scandal is another dark legacy of Franco, Irish Examiner February 7, 2011) Parliamentary democracy came back after General Franco died in 1975. When Franco was a child, clergy and doctors were authorized by the state to take thousands of babies from their parents, hold them captive and give them to families who they thought deserved them.

What is human trafficking? Human trafficking is a form of modern-day slavery where people profit from the control and exploitation of others. Victims of human trafficking include children involved in the sex trade, adults age 18 or over who are coerced or deceived into commercial sex acts, and anyone forced into different forms of "labor or services," such as domestic workers held in a home, or farm-workers forced to labor against their will. It’s a business in which doctors, nurses and even nuns work with criminal networks.

proof Listed below you will find information on how many investigations there are currently, what the authorities are finding out through investigating, how DNA is helping and what prosecutors are struggling with as they pursue these cases. They’ve uncovered numerous boxes of medical records in the trash. In February alone, there were 6,000 investigations. ANADIR has also set up a DNA database where people can search for matches. A company in Madrid called Genomica has built a DNA data bank from about seven hundred people since January. Even with DNA testing, prosecutors are facing a struggle to search common graves for the remains of babies. Medical records often prove to be incomplete.
investigation Because of heartbroken parents, judges are examining hundreds of cases of infants snatched and sold for adoption over a 40-year period. Attorney-General CandidoConde-Pumpido announced on June 18th that 849 cases were being examined, adding that 162 already could be classified as criminal proceedings because of evidence pointing to abductions. The cases, which could eventually run into the thousands, are shakinga country still affectedby the spoken and unspoken terrors of Spain's 1936-39 Civil War and Franco's rule.
Mrs. Rodrigo Romero’s Story Mrs. Rodrigo Romero gave birth in 1971. A doctor in a Seville hospital told her that she had had a son, who was small but ''fine and capable of getting a lot bigger''. That particular doctor never came back and neither did her baby. Instead another doctor stopped by two days later and told Mr. Rodrigo the baby had been sent to another hospital for further check, but had died there. “Deep inside, I’ve always known my son was stolen from me,” Mrs. Rodrigo Romero stated.
How much money is involved? Human trafficking generates about $32 billion a year
how to identify a victim of trafficking They demonstrate a sudden change in attire, behavior, or material possessions They do not control their own schedule, money, I.D., or travel documents They are transported to and from work, or live and work in the same place They have bruises, exhibit depression, fear, or are overly submissive They do not make eye contact They have a "boyfriend" who is noticeably older (10+ years) They are always accompanied by a controlling person and do not speak on own behalf
When did baby trafficking start being recognized as a problem? This illegal practice first came to the public’s attention about ten years ago when the government increased the numbers of mistakes for adoption. Years before that, adoption was largely a private matterwhich was left to particular doctors and relatives. Basically, this meant records were extremely confidential.
EstefaniaAnguita’s story EstefaniaAnguita and her twin sister were born in Barcelona in 1986. Like Ms. Sanchez’s story doctors told her mom that Estefania’s sister had died. Anguita’s grandmother wanted to bury her sister in the family plot but the hospital denied it. They weren’t even allowed to see the body. To cover their tracks, the hospital claimed it was their duty since the baby didn’t live more than one day. Anguita’s parents told her that they didn’t know where her sister was buried, she then became suspicious. So she took it upon herself to go to the hospital where she and her sisters were born. When she got there, there wasn’t a record of their birth. Anguita thought it should’ve been there, especially because of the death. There was something awfully suspicious going on, because death records are kept forever. The only possible explanation is that she could’ve been sold illegally into adoption. As shocking as it may sound, Anguita’s cases are like others in Spain.
