How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
A2 Media Studies required me to create a music video for a song of my choice, along with
two ancillary tasks, a digipak and a poster. I believe that my combination of my main product
and ancillary tasks work very well together, as there is a flowing theme throughout, which
fits with my genre of indie pop, and I will now explain why I believe this.
Before creating any of my tasks, I researched thoroughly into the genre of my music video
and also into the artist I was choosing to recreate. I read many articles on Lady GaGa and
watched all of her music videos along with others of the same genre, I found this extremely
useful because I knew what was typical of the similar types of music videos. Additionally,
throughout the time I was creating my music video, I was constantly asking for feedback
from friends I knew were fans of the genre and Lady GaGa and also from other people
online, where I posted drafts on music video. Furthermore, using all of this information I
created a set of brand guidelines, which helped me style all of my products and keep on
track. The main theme which is portrayed throughout the three tasks is abuse, pain and
suffering, I think that my products are effective in displaying these themes throughout, due
to the images used of a clearly disturbed and hurt young girl crying alone in a dark room.
Similar images are shown on all three of my tasks and therefore this is a way that my three
tasks have been effective as a combination.
The main purpose of a music video is for entertainment for an audience, this is also the
purpose of my music video. There are different ways in which a music video can be
entertaining to an audience, such as narrative performance, theatrical performance, as well
as others. Additionally, my audience can interact with the video itself and feel as the actress
is looking right at them because of the camera use, where the actress is looking directly at the
camera. This creates a further intimacy between the product and the consumer, which could
also create a relationship of sort between the two, as the consumer may feel as they canrelate
to the protagonist in ways.
A magazine adverts main priority is to advertise the wider product which is the album, it
should attract as much attention as possible as well as informing the audience of important
information they may need to know about the product being promoted. I knew I wanted to
use the same image from my digipak on my advert to keep a running theme, these pictures
are taken in the same place, in the same outfit and makeup as the music video is shot in,
therefore linking the music video and ancillary tasks together. I kept the colour scheme
simple throughout, blacks, whites and greys, all fonts were kept the same for specific words,
for example, ‘Born This Way’ was always written in Mistral in white.
