2. What is it and why is it
important?
The demographics of American public schools are
changing rapidly. In fact, 2014 was the first year that
Asian, Latino and African-American students
outnumbered whites in school enrollment throughout the
nation. This new “collective majority” of minority
students raises concerns about the preparedness of
Americas teachers to appropriately respond to the needs
of an increasingly diverse student population.

4. What is Culturally Responsive Teaching?
Culture provides us with a frame of reference for receiving
and interpreting information and it also helps to shape our
world view. This is why the one size-fits all approach to
culture in the classroom does not work. Culturally
responsive teaching is an approach that takes into
consideration students diverse cultural backgrounds and
incorporates multiple perspectives and cultural references
into the curriculum.

5. Benefits of Culturally Responsive
Teaching
• Creates a culture of inclusion and tolerance in the
classroom and beyond. An identity safe classroom
• Emphasizes cooperative learning
• Develops an understanding of democracy and
political/civic engagement
