1 Read the text and tick (✓) the sentences T (true) or F (false). Then copy the
sentences that helped you decide. (10 points)
Have you got a good sense of smell? If you have, you may be able to use this
talent when choosing a career. Since people who have got a good sense of smell
usually have a strong sense of taste as well, they are able to choose from a wide
range of interesting professions.
If you’ve got a good sense of smell and are interested in chemistry, you could
consider becoming a perfumer. Perfumers use their sense of smell to create
perfumes and other scented products, including lipstick and cleaning products.
They choose from thousands of natural and artificial smells and combine them
in a lab to create something unique.
If you enjoy working outside as well as working in a lab, you might think about
pursuing a career as a winemaker. Like perfumery, winemaking is a mixture of
art and science. Winemakers can’t only rely on the chemistry that is involved in
winemaking, but they must also be very sensitive to flavour and smell. Their
nose helps them during the winemaking process and allows them to know
exactly when to move on to the next stage.
For those of you who prefer drinking wine to making it, the job of taster may be
more suitable. Companies who want to distribute a new wine have to know
whether it will be popular. That is why they employ tasters to assess the quality
of the wine. Based on the feedback that they get from the tasters, they decide
whether it is worthwhile investing in this particular product.
Chefs and sommeliers also rely on their senses of taste and smell. Chefs use
their sense of smell to help them decide whether a dish is ready and how much
of a particular flavouring they need to add. Sommeliers are responsible for
matching the dishes that the chefs create to an appropriate wine. They use their
sense of taste to find the perfect wine for every dish.
So, next time you are the only person to notice a bad smell in a room, don’t
complain. Your strong sense of smell may be the key to a very successful career.
