Your Teacher Says…“Write it in your own words!”
So…Paraphrase-Summarize or Quote, But …Don’t Plagiarize!
Paraphrasing involves putting a passage into your own words. You still must give credit to or “cite” the original source.
Try this website for a paraphrasing tool! http://www.coedu.usf.edu/~dorn/testdiff.html Type a well known nursery rhyme and then put it in your “own words”, See if you can achieve no overlapping words or phrases.
View this video for further information about paraphrasing Video about paraphrasinghttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1t0G7ZnRG8
The paraphrase must be entirely in your own words. You must do more than just substitute phrases here and there. You must also completely change the sentence structure.
When writing your paper…Try this method to not plagiarize! Take notes from the original source- do not write full sentences! Complete a citation for this source. STEP AWAY from the original source! Convert your ideas from your notes into full sentences. Go back and look at the original to ensure that (a) your paraphrase is correct and (b) you have really said things in your own words.
As you are writing your paper, rely on your notes rather than on the author's original work. You will find it much easier to avoid “borrowing” from the original passage because you will not have recently seen it.
How Do I Summarize? When you summarize a passage, you need first to read the passage carefully and think about what it really means. Then write your own words the most important elements from the original passage. A summary is always shorter than a paraphrase.
Summarizing involves putting the main idea(s) into your own words, including only the main point(s). Citations must be done for summarized ideas also.
If it’s on the Internet, it must be true! -Remember than anyone can create a website! -Look at who is writing the content and who is sponsoring the website
If the source is cited, the information can be copied directly from the Internet website and paste it into their research paper. .
Wrong…This Is Plagiarism!
I can look up all of the “hard words” and change them. I can change a few words in the information and that will be good enough I can “quote” the whole paper to avoid the job of paraphrasing or summarizing the information.
Wrong…This Is Plagiarism!
Paraphrase and summary are important tools in writing because they allow you to include other people's ideas without cluttering up your project with quotations.
Your ideas are what matter most. Allow yourself the time and creativity to develop those ideas for your own research.
