types of accents/dialects and felt that they resulted in cultural stereotypes? Some of the
people in the video on “mountain talk” (from the Appalachian area of the state) specifically
addressed how language was a part of their culture. Explain whether this connection, and
whether it makes sense to you. Are there other ways that your own personal

Katz (who has since published a book that expands on these maps. Pick two maps that are
of interest to you, either because you have lived in areas where the accent/dialect
appearing on the maps was used, or for any other reason. For each of the two, why do you
think these variations exist? What is their origin? (You can do your own independent
