  1. Linux created by LinusTorvalds is an Unix based Operating System that can be installed on any device that a command is be made on such, as computers, mobile phones, or even GPS’.
  2. -Linux Torvalds was born on December 28, 1969 in Helsinki, Finland. He graduated with a master's degree in computer sciences from University of Helsinki, it was there when he exposed Linux for the first time in 1991.
  3. -Linux was first started as a hobby of LinusTorvalds. Once released in 1991, it became more popular and turned out be a free and open sourced software collaboration where anyone with a GNU General Publishing license could modify it and redistribute it to the world.
  4. -Unix was developed in 1969 by a group of AT&T employees at Bell Labs. -Unixoperating systems are widely used in both servers, workstations, and mobile devices. The Unix environment and the client–server program were essential elements in the development of the Internet and fine tuning ofnetworks.
  5. GNU was created to be the “complete Unix-compatible software system”. GNU is much like Unix, but with free software and no unix code involved. GNU software is published to the free software foundation and the software is most widely used by the Linux Kernel.
  6. Minix is also a Unix like operating system and was created by Andrew Tanenbaum for instructional purposes. Created in 1987 for universities study and research purposes. This “mini-unix” helped inspire LINUX.
  7. Linux was inspired by the UNIX, GNU, and MINIX operating systems. Linux versions are based on each kernel that is available to the world. It is free and is growing everyday through commercial and non-commercial designers because of its free and open sourced programming abilities. Linux has over a dozen different programming languages and is also multi-lingual.
  8. Over 75% of the Linux kernel code from December 2008 to January 2010 was developed by corporations. Some of the major corporations that contribute include Dell, IBM, HP, Oracle, Sun Microsystems, Novell, and Nokia. These companies have been built around Linux distributions especially red hat who distributes FEDORA.
  9. The user-interface used by linux can be controlled by command line interface, graphical user interface, or through controls associated with the hardware. On most machines X Window System is used because of network transparency, enabling a graphical application running on one machine to be displayed and controlled from another.
  10. In terms of security, Linux is ahead of Mac. Linux users are not automatically given administrator privileges on their computers, therefore, viruses and malware don't automatically have access to everything. However, on Macs, if the user so much as clicks on something, their whole computer is at risk.
  11. Linux is much more customizable than Mac. With Linux, almost everything is changeable and customizable. You can have everything the way you want it to be, no matter how simple or complex. However, with mac, everything is how apple wants it to be, and there is little room for customization.
  12. The most typical use for linux is for desktops and servers. Linux also has distributions for computer architecture support, embedded systems, stability and support. There are over 300 distributions. The Linux Kernel runs in devices ranging from supercomputers to mobile phones.
  13. Linux has two popular distributions- GNOME and KDE. These both allow the user to set their own personal preferenes. Desktop linux environments have been improving and thus more people are using it. Programs for Mac and Microsoft are available to Linux because they are free software applications.
  14. Linux devices are computer appliances that are powered by the Linux operating system kernel. The reasons of using Linux may be various - low cost, security, stability, scalability or customizability. Over 50 mobile phones use Linux. The LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation is an alliance founded by Motorola and other companies to develop the LiMo platform.
  15. Not only is linux found on personal computers and cell phones, but it is also found in multimedia devices and gaming consoles. The devices can run a linux distribution, but require user installation. Some devices include the iPod, Zune, Nintendo GameCube, Wii, Xbox, Playstation 3. Playstation 3 is the easiest home console to install because of its user interface and official support for installation through UI.
  16. Most of Linux distributions are free of charge and can be downloaded easily. What makes linux such a highly regarded operating system is because of its abilities that mac and windows can not offer. Also Linux runs the Apache web server which is the most popular web server today.
  17. The London Stock Exchange tested a new Linux-based system that will replace its Microsoft based system. The change is due to take place on November first, and is intended to be one of the fastest exchange systems in the world with trading times of 0.125 milliseconds.
  18. BleachBit and GtkOrphan refresh the computer, which helps to solve small problems before they escalade. Linux is not very user-friendly when it comes to altering settings that control boot up sequences, but Startup Manager allows you to easily change default boot options.
  19. The Linux Foundation’s survey shows how popular Linux is becoming in the enterprise computing world.-79 percent of companies are adding more Linux relative to other operating systems in the next five years.-60 percent of respondents say they will use Linux for more mission-critical workloads over the next 12 months.
  20. Torvalds isn’t planning on making any major changes to the operating system; the future of Linux mostly has to do with being able to support a wider range of systems. The SMP, web serving, kernal space and user space are all areas that will be improved. However, the changes in the kernal will seem small compared to what’s happening to the rest of the system.
