One could say I’m here because the Nelke Family from Germany and the Adams family from Prussia contributed to a gene pool from which I was formed…..
Creating all that is me…appearantly one of my ancestors was a Pirate from Wales…before the relatives moved to America… Or, you could say that my life has more meaning… purpose…the result of unique design… What if my life was uniquely created by God for his divine purpose to bring glory to him?
Quote made famous by the Blues Brothers….Were on a mission, from God. I would go around talking with my friends and quoting John Belushi: “Im on a Mission, From God” trying to imitate his tone and expression. At the time, little did I know it was TRUE
Story of the “crowd response” when Jesus called his disciples to a mission: John 6 Jesus starts to share about how much following Him will cost
We observe that many departed and walked with him no more when they were challenged. They followed because he fed them, because they saw him do miracles…but when it started to cost them something, they left. But the 12 remained. John 6 records their response to Jesus question when he asked: “Will you leave also” Here is there response
What will you do when you find out what your mission will cost you? First, lets review why your mission matters.
2Co 5:20 Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf, be reconciled to God. Mt 28:19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Mt 28:20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Amen. Jesus left the continuation of his mission to those who would follow him.
Ac 4:12 Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." Jesus is the only one that can save people. Telling others how they can have eternal life is the greatest thing you can do for them. No matter how successful people appear to be, without christ they are headed for eternal separation from God. We have the greatest news in the world. Sharing it is the greatest kindness you can show anyone. Nothing else will matter as much as helping people establish an eternal relationship with God. Furthermore, if you cannot be motivated by helping others, realize there is reward for your service to God. Jim Wise, my friend, passed away last week. Known for two statements: If I were any better I’d be in Heaven…and I’m greedy for heavenly treasure. What he meant by the second was that he wanted to do all he can to store up treasure in heaven so that his reward one day would be great. Is it wrong to be motivated by heavenly reward? Well, I don’t know. I just know that Jesus told us to store up treasure in heaven.
Rick Warren said “the best use of life is to spend it for something that outlasts it.” Only the kingdom of God is going to last. Paul’s perspective Ac 20:24 But none of these things move me; nor do I count my life dear to myself, so that I may finish my race with joy, and the ministry which I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Paul felt that his life was worthless unless he was doing the work assigned him by Jesus. If paul would speak today, I believe he would say don’t waste your time here.
Lk 14:33 So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple. Here is where many depart from walking with Christ…when they know what the cost is. I go shopping and one of the most annoying things is not knowing the price. Its intentional sales technique to not say the price until after you’ve told the potential buyer all the reasons why they want the product. Do you ever get to the point where you hear the price and decide: NO? Some call it sticker shock…the price is just too much. For many that followed Jesus, the sticker shock was too much. There is a church that started with a unique philosophy. To be a member, you had to answer three questions: Do you know Jesus as your savior? If yes, then Do you want to grow in your christ like character? If yes, then Will you lay down your life in order to see others come to Christ? If yes, then you can be a member. If not, here is the name of a good church down the road that won’t ask you to lay down your life…. This church reports that only about 20% of people are willing to make this kind of commitment. But the church has grown from a handful of people to over 300 now in a few years.
Will you fulfill your life mission given to you by God? First, you are called to worship. You are called to walk in love and unity with the body of Christ. You are called to grow in your character. You are uniquely created for ministry. And, you are made for a mission. Your mission is your ministry or service to unbelievers. What will you do to see others come to Christ? Your mission field is where God has placed you in the midst of people who don’t know him. Some go to foreign countries because that’s where God called…since he wants the gospel proclaimed to the ends of the earth. Most of us are placed exactly where we are for God’s purpose. Sometimes God moves us…those are times of trial and testing and preparation and listening for God’s direction. Whats your mission? Ask yourself and write in the blank space provided: What skills and abilities has God given me? What is my unique shape? Who does God bring me into contact with through the way he has made me or where he has placed me? What can I do in those places to fulfill my mission? You can: PRAY. SERVE. INVITE to an event or to church or SHARE your testimony or the gospel. . If you are willing, Abandon your agenda Stop praying God bless what I am doing and start praying God help me do what you will bless Hand God a blank sheet and let God fill in the details.
