1. VESSEL READY FOR FUTURE RETROFIT
Design/build a vessel that will use MDO in
ECAs but that can easily be retrofitted to
LNG in the future.

2. VESSEL READY FOR LNG OPERATION
Design/build a vessel with LNG system and
gas engines installed and ready to run on
LNG from first day of operation.

tems for operating on LNG fuel
■■ Payback time starts immediately
■■ More environmentally friendly profile
■■ The cost-benefit assessment may be used
towards potential customers (ship own-
ers or charterers) to promote the ship/
design
DNV provides decision support to ship owners, designers and yards for making vessels ready for future LNG
retrofit or ready for LNG operation today. Based on technical and financial feasibility studies, DNV helps you select

expenses based on the ves-
sel’s operational profile.
Sensitivity analysis for impact
of fuel price development is
included.
2. CONCEPT CAPTURE
■■ DNV can assist you in your
development of novel
ship designs and perform
detailed technical feasibil-
ity studies tailored to the
specific design and technical
challenges for your vessel.
■■ For novel designs DNV rec-
ommends to perform a haz-
ard identification (HAZID)
review of the concept with
the aim to identify hazards
which could potential lead to
high risks in operation. DNV
can also assist with design
review of existing drawings at
an early stage, providing the
client with valuable docu-
mentation for future approv-
al or approval in principle.
3. INITIAL DESIGN
■■ To ensure readiness for
LNG as a fuel, DNV offers
verification of the design
concept and confirmation of
compliance through DNV’s
approval in principle. This
is of particular importance
for ships prepared for LNG
retrofit.
■■ DNV helps you to identify
and mitigate the risks associ-
ated with a given design to
ensure the development of
a safe system right from the
beginning.
4. RISK ASSESSMENT
■■ DNV will perform a risk
assessment which will
quantify the risk level of the
LNG fuelled ship compared
to the acceptance criteria,
as defined by IMO Resolu-
tion MSC. 285(86) “Interim
Guidelines”.
■■ The interim guidelines state
that a risk analysis shall be
undertaken for any new or
altered concept with the goal
to document a safety level
which is at least equivalent
to a new, comparable diesel-
fuelled vessel.
›› DNV’s analysis takes into account both investment costs and operational costs in a life
cycle perspective. The analysis illustrates payback time and the value of the investment
over the lifetime of the ship for all relevant options for future emission compliance.

VESSEL READY FOR FUTURE RETROFIT Design/build a vessel that will use MDO in ECAs but that can easily be retrofitted to LNG in the future. BENEFITS ■■ DNV validates that the necessary prepa- rations for later easy retrofit are taken, and specifies which changes will be required ■■ Minimum investment requirement ■■ The cost-benefit assessment describes when a full conversion is attractive ■■ Good option for ships under construc- tion or existing conventional designs 2. VESSEL READY FOR LNG OPERATION Design/build a vessel with LNG system and gas engines installed and ready to run on LNG from first day of operation. BENEFITS ■■ The design includes all the required sys- tems for operating on LNG fuel ■■ Payback time starts immediately ■■ More environmentally friendly profile ■■ The cost-benefit assessment may be used towards potential customers (ship own- ers or charterers) to promote the ship/ design DNV provides decision support to ship owners, designers and yards for making vessels ready for future LNG retrofit or ready for LNG operation today. Based on technical and financial feasibility studies, DNV helps you select the best option according to operational and environmental requirements. STRATEGY – FUEL DECISION Technical feasibily assessment: ■■ LNG tank location and range in gas mode based on the ship operational profile. ■■ Outline of the necessary requirements for an LNG Ready/fuelled design. ■■ For LNG ready designs: High level list of technical changes that will be required in a future retrofit. Financial analysis: ■■ A high-level financial com- parison of LNG, MGO and HFO with scrubber options including both invest- ment cost and operational expenses based on the ves- sel’s operational profile. Sensitivity analysis for impact of fuel price development is included. 2. CONCEPT CAPTURE ■■ DNV can assist you in your development of novel ship designs and perform detailed technical feasibil- ity studies tailored to the specific design and technical challenges for your vessel. ■■ For novel designs DNV rec- ommends to perform a haz- ard identification (HAZID) review of the concept with the aim to identify hazards which could potential lead to high risks in operation. DNV can also assist with design review of existing drawings at an early stage, providing the client with valuable docu- mentation for future approv- al or approval in principle. 3. INITIAL DESIGN ■■ To ensure readiness for LNG as a fuel, DNV offers verification of the design concept and confirmation of compliance through DNV’s approval in principle. This is of particular importance for ships prepared for LNG retrofit. ■■ DNV helps you to identify and mitigate the risks associ- ated with a given design to ensure the development of a safe system right from the beginning. 4. RISK ASSESSMENT ■■ DNV will perform a risk assessment which will quantify the risk level of the LNG fuelled ship compared to the acceptance criteria, as defined by IMO Resolu- tion MSC. 285(86) “Interim Guidelines”. ■■ The interim guidelines state that a risk analysis shall be undertaken for any new or altered concept with the goal to document a safety level which is at least equivalent to a new, comparable diesel- fuelled vessel. ›› DNV’s analysis takes into account both investment costs and operational costs in a life cycle perspective. The analysis illustrates payback time and the value of the investment over the lifetime of the ship for all relevant options for future emission compliance. ›› The Green Dolphin – Prepared for LNG fuel.
