1. Situation
Brighton is a great place to work.
I made the decision to move my business down from London in May 2011.
Giles from Brandwatch told me that there is a ready-made community of disruptors and collaborators
We have the highest concentration of digital talent in the country
2 x universities
Wired Sussex and good broadband, 4G
Good connections to London +access to Europe via Gatwick
2. The Brighton Way of Doing Things
Yes it isn’t enough
We could do so much better
We’re not about transforming Brighton, we’re about making our make on a national, European & global scale
We often have to evangelise about the place to others.
I am often asked why did I set up in Brighton
I believe it should be obvious to the world why we’re here
I am not personally interested whether Brighton produces the next unicorn.
The next Uber, Google, Air BnB.
Good for anyone that smashes it, that’s not my journey and i suspect it isn’t necessarily yours either
We want to do great work - Brighton’s culture is defined by the work that we do.
Building successful business that show’s the world ‘The Brighton Way’
3. Malcolm Gladwell
This chap is Macolm Gladwell, New York Columnist and popularise thinker
Some love him, some disagree with him.
Personally, I love the fact that he stimulates me to look at problems from a different angle.
In his most recent book, Davis & Goliath he reframes the myth of the battle between the Isrealites and the Philistines.
It wasn’t pluck, luck or guile that the inferior David beat Goliath,
David had the odds stacked in his favour from the get go
4. David and Goliath
Goliath was a slow, lumbering, possible half-blind giant.
In close combat, he’d kill almost anyone.
But David didn’t choose close combat. He was an expert slingshot - something that the Israelite forces of the time had in abundance.
It was like Goliath was using a sword and David was using an automatic pistol.
The supposed strong have their weaknesses.
The supposed weak have strengths.
5. Problem
Brighton often fights golliaths on their own terms
We talk about the great community, but do we use it to our maximum advantage?
Once established, do business lose their way?
We talk about being happy the way Brighton is.
The West Pier is a great analogy.
We say that we love its beauty, when actually the crime was we let it go to seed.
If we become isolated, how does that help us?
6. Solution
Bloom’s first collaborative workspace is this space.
We did well to turn a down at heel office into a space that is fun to work in, in the heart of Brighton.
But we too made mistakes.
We looked at collaboration as a way to fuel our own growth and didn’t take a wider-view on the problem.
My words were not met with the right actions
We brought in businesses and freelancers that would extend our bubble and not reach out to the community as a whole
We started playing goliath and somewhere our belief in the collaborative community, as a force for positive disruption got lost.
7. Outcome
So I’ve pushed the reset button,
We’re creating a collborative workspace that is a place where we want to work, not a place where we can build our own bubble.
Its a new build, so we have the opportunity to ensure that its more than a lick of paint.
We’ve built it with sustainable materials, in a highly insulated and low-carbon emitting environment.
It has a balance of indoor and outdoor space
Its not putting lipstick on a pig
8. Constitution
Build a community that works for each other, in and out of the office.
Augment the already great structures we have - Wired Sussex, Fusebox, Entrepreneurial Spark to name a few
Take it to the next stage
Belief that your environment fuels success
Here’s our constitution - work in progress as we want the community to buy into and build on this.
9. Pricing
We’ve put a price structure in place that is competitive, but the real exciting thing is to build a community that hosts events and ensures that collaboration takes place.
We want to remove the clique and have a place where all members input.
This isn’t a cynical money making exercise for Bloom
This is something I passionately believe in - pay it forward
