There are several reasons why groups are formed, including: 1. Locality or geography, as people join groups in their local community where it is convenient, such as a local soccer team, where social benefits come from friends also participating. 2. Shared interests or common goals, as groups form around a particular interest or talent like a hobby or sport, or to achieve a common goal like a church or fundraising group. 3. Specific needs, with groups forming temporarily to meet a need, like a volunteer group after a disaster, or more permanently around an ongoing need like a playgroup for children.

3. Gender. Grouped according to whether we are male or female. It is based on how you act in your social community. Example sporting team, toilets, school.

4. Shared interest / common goal. Formed because group members have a particular interest such as a hobby, artistic or sporting talent and/or a common goal such as a church or a community fundraising groups.

5. Security. Being part of a group provides us with a sense of community. We also gain a feeling of security by participating in a group that has similar interests such as being an src member in our school community.

6. Sexuality. This may be formed based on a persons sexuality. Examples include a wide variety of gay and lesbian groups within the community.

7. Specific needs. Forms in responses to a particular need it may be temparay and the group stops when the need is met. Example volunteer group assisting in response to a natural disaster. More permenant groups based on specific needs include a play group for young children.

8. Social interactions. Groups formed with the main goal of social interaction include a gathering at a party, work social club or a mothers group.

9. Culture. A group may form from a particular culture to enjoy communicating in their native language, eating traditional foods and experience activities familiar to this culture.
