Passion Fuels Achievement: Find What You Love

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Hello, my name is Brian McDonald and I’m here to share my story about my journey into podcasting. Brief background, I’m a husband, father of 2 teenagers, and the digital Marketing and Analytics manager at Dude solutions. We provide Cloud-based solutions to help companies manage assets, improve workflow and make data-driven decisions. . But what we really do is help schools, governments, hospitals and companies save money on their energy, maintenance, events and technology to make our schools better and safer, our government spend and manage wisely and ensure quality in health and other industries I’m a past president of this chapter and can tell you that speaking at High 5 is a real honor for me so thank you for attending and a huge thanks to the volunteers that put on this event. So why am I here talking to you about podcasting. First off is anyone now a practicing podcaster? Does anyone want to become a podcaster? That’s great. I’m here today to tell you about my journey in discovering my passion for podcasting. Creating a truly interpersonal and experience that is driven and sustained by passion.
  2. Passion Matters It’s the fuel that nourishes your soul. It’s what drives and sustains us. And it’s very important to remember when creating a podcast. Don’t lose site of what your true passions are because otherwise you may not be able to sustain it. Although we may not choose to wear our passion on our face and look as scary as this Raiders fan. We each have several passions that can create some of the greatest emotions and memories of our lives. And Podcasting is a great way to share that.
  3. GRIT by Angela Duckworth is a great study on why do some people succeed, and others fail? She asks the typical nature vs. nurture argument. Is it raw talent or intelligence? Or something more? Angela says the answer, GRIT. To me GRIT — a steely combination of passion and long-term perseverance for a singular goal. Passion is one of the four key components, along with + practice + purpose + persistency. And what I found interesting and true in her work is that talent doesn’t make you gritty. Your Effort counts twice as much as talent. So when you put forth an effort it’s going to increase your success and trigger your passion.
  4. Steve Jobs was the one person that if he did a show like the Apprentice I would have tried out. I greatly admired Steve before I bought my first Mac in 1989. I was in my Senior year at NC State and was amazed at the power of these machines to create clean, nice documents. I got my first job because I could use desktop publishing software to produce marketing collateral. So if he had done the Apprentice I remember telling my wife that I would quit my job and apply. What I most admired about Steve Jobs was his passion and persistence for creating the Macintosh and all the Apple products that followed. One of the things that bothered Steve Jobs the most was the time that it took to boot when the Mac was first powered on. It could take a couple of minutes, or even more, to test memory, initialize the operating system, and load the Finder. One afternoon, Steve came up with an original way to motivate us to make it faster. Larry Kenyon was the engineer working on the disk driver and file system. Steve came into his cubicle and started to exhort him. "The Macintosh boots too slowly. You've got to make it faster!" Larry started to explain about some of the places where he thought that he could improve things, but Steve wasn't interested. He continued, "You know, I've been thinking about it. How many people are going to be using the Macintosh? A million? No, more than that. In a few years, I bet five million people will be booting up their Macintoshes at least once a day." "Well, let's say you can shave 10 seconds off of the boot time. Multiply that by five million users and that’s 50 million seconds, every single day. Over a year, that's probably dozens of lifetimes. So if you make it boot ten seconds faster, you've saved a dozen lives. That's really worth it, don't you think?" What Steve Jobs loved was changing the way we use technology, make it easy for the masses to use and apply and take it to another level with his platform, create the next great experience.
  5. I’ve always enjoyed creating and sharing content. In the past I’ve been more of a writer and creative designer. Web pages are a palette where I can create messages and craft experiences. I’ve written blogs on marketing and music and enjoyed the creative part. At the same time, I found it hard to sustain. For marketing content, coming up with original or relevant content on a regular basis is challenging. Sharing my passion for marketing automation had its challenges. I could not share anything that may be a competitive advantage. And that’s what the real good stuff is. When I looked at marketing podcast, I saw a very crowded and saturated market that I did not have a deep passion to dive into.
  6. We see passion projects everywhere. One of the sponsors of this event and fantastic company here in Raleigh is Brand Fuel. Danny Rosin and his team have created a truly passionate brand over the years. They are a great event and promotions partner and I say that being both a customer and a fan of their work. Recently, after the tragic shootings at concerts both in the US and abroad, Brand Fuel created the BAND FUEL PROJECT. They did not want people to be scared of enjoying their favorite live music. They wanted to remind people of the power of music. Music is the great uniter, where people who don’t agree on many things can find a common connection.   Music builds community. Music is positive and powerful. Let’s not let anyone steal that away.   This campaign celebrated those words by having each team member share their musical passion. They wore band t-shirts, posted links to the bands sites, recorded messages about why they love the artist so much. And then they invited others to share their favorites, their feelings about the power of music and what it means to them. Wear their favorite bands t-shirt. And I love Danny’s quote: “We all need a little bit of punk rock to get us through life” Sometimes punk rock moments can be what trigger our passion and grit.
  7. So I now I had a subject matter. Music, But that’s broad. I needed to narrow it down. Find my niche. When I started a blog about concerts I attended I found it to be a bit stale. I didn’t go to as many shows as I did when I was younger. If only I could of blogged in the early 90s! I knew I wanted something that had current, contemporary input to the content. So I thought about reviewing music but what would the show be about? Then I remembered about when I was growing up. Hanging out with friends and listening to albums. Sometimes you would take a new album or an old one, over to a friends house. You would put the record on and listen, talk, read the liner notes, examine the artwork if it was worth it.
  8. Record stores where my community gathering spot for music growing up. I loved browsing through the bins. Flipping through albums sometimes not looking for anything in particular. Maybe you would buy something, other times you’re just browsing. When I attended NC State I would stop by Schoolkid’s Records on Hillsborogh St, almost every Tuesday. That’s the day when the new releases came out. Sometimes I would spend 5 minutes there, sometimes an hour. You got to know the staff and they got to know you. It was a tribe, although Seth Godin’s book was not written then so calling it that would have been weird. But it was the place that you could go and talk music. Or listen to others talk music. Or just browse. Today we don’t really have records stores. Sure vinyl is back and there are some hipster stores. But the record store being the gathering place is gone. But what I realized is that the what had not changed, it was the where.
  9. Today we listen to music everywhere and more often than not by ourselves. We don’t tend to listen to music in groups as much as we are listening on ear buds. But what has not changes is our curiosity and desire to hear something new, something different. But discovering new music does not happen at the record store anymore. Much of it is online and that’s great. I love reading about bands when I get into their music. But what had diminished some are the real life interactions. The discussions about likes and dislikes. Finding that common connection that brings us together, Like the BAND FUEL PROJECT.
  10. So for a year I had an idea that I wanted to do a podcast around music. But what would it be?
There was a study a few years ago that said after 30 we tend to stop listening to new music. We’ve become comfortable with the catalog we’ve listened to and our desire to explore new artists diminishes. Yet I always enjoyed when others with similar taste shared something they thought I would enjoy. It’s like a gift. I remembered back to my youth. Taking albums over to friends house. Maybe even trading some of them for some of theirs. Even if it wasn’t for keeps you could borrow or swap albums. And that was it. Album Swap. I would create a podcast that shared my passion for music with another person. We could discuss and promote the albums we’ve loved at any point in our lives. So I teamed up with a former coworker, Fred Dees, who I had great music conversations with at work. I told him about the idea and he loved it. I had the partner I wanted. I bought a microphone. We picked 2 albums and launched Album Swap. Our first episode are fairly raw. I like to call them our punk rock days. But I knew that if we kept with it and put forth the effort it would continue to improve. So there’s where your GRIT comes in, where effort is twice as much as intelligence. We knew nothing about actually producing a podcast but our effort taught us more than we could have learned beforehand.
  11. One of the big scary things about podcasting is starting something that can take a life of its own. What I’ve learned and admire about some podcasters, is serializing the content into succinct series. That way if you don’t want to commit to a long term publishing schedule you can still produce a great podcast. If you do want a long term commitment then look at your passion and your topic and ask if it can sustain the long run? If not then series is still a great way to share your passion.
  12. In addition to how many episodes is the actual episode length. It’s easy to get wordy when sharing something you love and have talked about before, even in just friendly conversation. Examine your desired length and test out how long you can talk about the topic. Record a test and trim it down? Do you tell the story well? Will the listener enjoy it? These are easy internal tests you can do to better hone your podcast. It’s easy to go overboard if you’re overly passionate. I’ve noticed where we have to reign in the enthusiasm a bit but you don’t want to lose the spunk. Here’s where executing counts twice. You will greatly improve as you publish. Each episode becomes better based on your increased expertise and experience as well as executing counts 2x.
  13. In doing this I’ve created something that has reached over 50 countries. And by discovering my passion I was able to fuel the content for my podcast. Wrapping up, I ask you to listen to me and see if I’ve lived up to what I’ve spoken about here today. Check out my podcast at Album Swap and see if we’ve covered any of your favorite albums. Let me know what you think. And if you love it tell your friends!
