Just read this slide
David Lee- Author of the book “Successful Onboarding” The important thing to remember is that onboarding is a process. It’s not a first day introduction to your company but an ongoing immersion into your company culture.
“Let’s start off by showing you an example of someone being introduced into a new company. We call it Day One at the Linen Factory.” Activity: Introductory skit of BAD onboarding process. Throw new employee (audience participant) into skit 1: Introduce her to her mentor and have mentor be too busy to train her. “There’s a mop and some towels…why don’t you clean up right now-I’m pretty busy!” Skit 2: (another audience participant) Have boss explain complicated process quickly and then leave new trainee to try and do it on her own. Debrief by questioning the class “Has anyone ever had a similar experience starting a new job?” “How would this make you feel?” etc… Do you think that employee will stay with the company? Will she be excited and work hard for the company if she does??
(Link each piece to the skit)--First Impression-Was the manager on time with paperwork completed. Did the new employee get a tour of the facility and a meet and greet. Were the other employees introduced etc…
Set up with mentor or partner-Does the manager assign a go-to person for the new employee to have available for questions
Good Learning Blend-Is there a mix in learning modalities? E-learning, reading, shadowing etc…Training needs to touch on all learning styles
Accountability-Is the manager checking in with the new employee at regular intervals to make sure the learning is sticking? Are training plans fully filled out and signed off on? What ?s do you have regarding Key Elements of onboarding?
Productive sooner-because they have a go to person to ask questions and everyone is helping them learn, they get up to speed more quickly
Higher morale/satisfaction-onboarding helps create a team mentality and allows new employees to make friends on the job more quickly.
Lower turnover rates-the roi on onboarding is phenomenal! At the minimum, it helps keep new employees so you don’t have to recruit and retrain new ones. The increased engagement is also seen as a way to increase business production. Employees who are engaged, buy into the company vision and are more inclined to go the extra distance to promote that vision. What ?s do you have regarding rewards and benefits of onboarding?
Activity: Divide audience into two or three groups depending on how many attend. Have competition between teams to see who can answer the most questions correctly. Small prizes provided.
Knowledge of the company and integration into the culture emPOWERS new employees to succeed!
