1. The Alamo There has been many battles in Texas but only one is considered the cradle of Texas liberty. It is where Texas defenders fell to Mexican General Santa Anna and the phrase Remember the Alamo originated from. It is also considered one of the most famous battles in American history. Located in San Antonio, the Alamo is the most popular historic site in Texas.

2. Mission San Antonio de Valero The Alamo used to be called the mission San Antonio de Valero and was one of several missions that the Spanish government formed in Texas. The Alamo was built by the Spanish Empire in 1744 and was originally made up of a sanctuary and buildings around it. It was used by the Catholic Church to teach people the doctrines of the Church and educate Native Americans about Catholicism and Christianity after they were converted.

3. Conversion to Military Fortress In 1793, the Mission San Antonio de Valero was no longer governed by the Church because there was no use for the mission since most of the tribes of Texas had be Christianized. The mission was abandoned and later became a fortress for the Mexican Army. The Mexican Army are believed to have given the name Alamo to the site. Part of the fortress was used as a hospital and it was considered the first hospital of San Antonio.

4. Texas Revolution The Alamo was surrendered by Mexican forces to General Martin Perfecto de Cos in 1835 in the middle of the Texas Revolution. Cos retreated from the Alamo after an attack by Texan forces. Texans believed that the war was over and that there were no more Mexican forces in Texas but they were mistaken.

5. Battle of the Alamo On February 23, 1836, Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna personally oversaw the siege of the Alamo for thirteen days because of the rebellion of Texans against the Mexican government. Mexican Army blocked off the water supply to the Alamo. Reinforcements was requested by the Alamo defenders but the Texan government was not yet well organized and couldn’t send backup.

6. Remember the Alamo The siege ended on March 6th when the Mexicans were victorious at the Battle of the Alamo. Almost all 189-250 Alamo defenders were killed in the battle of the Alamo and 600 Mexicans were killed or wounded. This was a very historic battle in the Texan Revolution.

7. The End of Texan Revolution The Alamo was occupied by the Mexican army after the Battle of the Alamo. The Texan revolution was officially over when the Mexican army was defeated at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Mexican troops stationed at the Alamo agreed to leave Texas but not before they destroyed many parts of the Alamo.

8. Governed by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas After their formation in 1892, the Daughters of the Republic of Texas began to try and preserve the Alamo.

9. Modern useof the Alamo The Alamo is a very popular attraction now. Over 4 million people visit it each year.

10. Texas Facts Did you know…... Texas is the only state to have the flags of 6 different nations fly over it. They are: Spain, France, Mexico, Republic of Texas, Confederate States, and the United States Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty instead of territorial annexation.
