8. Strategic partner agreement with Telefónica
Large scale digitisation projects
Signed in January 2008 as a result of successful
launching (visits, downloading and media coverage)
The 5-year agreement amounts to a contribution of
10 million euros + technical assessment
Scope: to have 200.000 works representing around
25.000.000 digital images by the end of 2012
The Spanish BNE project with Telefonica 8
9. Both sides of the agreement
The main benefit for the Library is the funding of the
mass digitisation activities
Telefónica can deduct this contribution from
Corporate Tax
The logo of Telefónica must appear in the Digital
Library Portal and Telefónica’s sponsorship has to
be mentioned in any communication of the Library
regarding the mass digitisation project
Exclusivity of this agreement in terms of other
telecommunication companies which could be
considered as competitors of Telefónica
The Spanish BNE project with Telefonica 9
10. Special benefits for the BNE
The BNE is the only owner of the digital images
(both access and master copies)
It is unique responsible for the digitised content and
for the technical specifications
Quality of the content and of the process is assured
as long as it is done under the Library’s criteria and
needs
Access to the digital objects depends only of the
BNE
The BNE respect for copyright law, only works that
are undoubtedly under public domain
The Spanish BNE project with Telefonica 10
11. Others related projects
Two other projects related to the Public Private
Partnership in the digital environment:
ENCLAVE, an agreement with Spanish editors to
offer digital content under copyright through the
Digital Library of the BNE
A print on demand service (POD). This service is
under a non-exclusive agreement with a print on-
demand company: Bubok

13. Cooperation BNE/Telefónica
The project is being coordinated in cooperation
between the BNE and Telefónica
The works are developed in the Library facilities and
the BNE is responsible for the procedures, technical
and quality aspects with the assistance of experts from
Telefónica
Telefónica carries out the administrative management
with the agreement of the Library
The BNE informs Telefónica of the different activities
that are going to take place. There has been a very
good understanding between the BNE and Telefónica

14. Impact in the Library procedures
The massive digitisation process has had a great impact
on the Library procedures:
The effort to have thousands of pages digitized
every day (27.000) has been very important and
has affected most of the Services of the Library
In the process, and in order to guarantee the quality
of the Digital Library, specialists select the books,
catalogue them and repair them if necessary
The infrastructure of the Digital Library Department
has grown as the digital collection increased
