President Eisenhower founded the Sister Cities movement in 1956 to encourage communities in the US and around the world to affiliate with one another in order to help build peace between nations on a people-to-people level. Sister Cities International promotes peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation between individual citizens and communities. The city of Tulsa has eight sister cities that it has established affiliations with since 1980 in countries including Mexico, Taiwan, China, Israel, Japan, Russia, Germany, and France.
