Gartner Hype Cycle
Evolve Project | Brian Pichman

Tech moves through these five phases
Hype Cycle
A potential technology
breakthrough kicks
things off. Early proof-
of-concept stories and
media interest trigger
significant publicity.
Often no usable
products exist and
commercial viability is
unproven.
Innovation
Trigger
Peak of
Inflated
Expectations
Early publicity produces
a number of success
stories — often
accompanied by scores
of failures. Some
companies take action;
many do not.
Trough of
Disillusionment
Interest wanes as
experiments and
implementations fail to
deliver. Producers of
the technology shake
out or fail. Investments
continue only if the
surviving providers
improve their products
to the satisfaction of
early adopters.
Slope of
Enlightenment
More instances of how
the technology can
benefit start to become
more widely
understood. Next
generation products
appear. More
enterprises fund pilots;
conservative companies
remain cautious.
Plateau of
Productivity
Mainstream adoption
starts to take off.
Criteria for assessing
provider viability are
more clearly defined.
The technology's broad
market applicability and
relevance are clearly
paying off.
SOURCE: https://www.gartner.com/en/research/methodologies/gartner-hype-cycle
Theme 1: Engineering trust
• A lot of the new technologies on
the horizon have a core focus on
providing trust through security
and reliability.
• Example:
Smart Cities fusing information
together to provide real-time
incident response through a
variety of sensors, videos, and
communication systems.
Former CIA agent Reese (Jim Caviezel) -- now presumed dead -- and
billionaire software genius Finch (Michael Emerson) join forces as a
vigilante crime-fighting team. Using Finch's program, which employs
pattern recognition to determine individuals who will soon be involved
in violent crimes, they combine Reese's covert-operations training and
Finch's money and cyberskills to stop crimes before they happen.
Former Army Intelligence Support Activity operative Sameen Shaw
joins the pair in their quest.
Theme 2: Accelerating growth
• Many of the technologies on the
horizon can help accelerate
growth in organizations.
• Example: Digital Assistants or
digital twins representation that
have an opportunity to solve
technical issues, recommend
books, and more. These can be
chatbots, robots, smart
speakers, etc.
A boy tries to stop his father from dating by programming their
computerized house to be a surrogate mother.
Theme 3: Sculpting change
• Everyone's favorite word
“change” is a theme for 2022.
• The concept is “You must
anticipate and influence change
to mitigate risk.”
Based on a story by famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick,
"Minority Report" is an action-detective thriller set in Washington D.C.
in 2054, where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict
murderers before they commit their crime. Tom Cruise plays the head
of this Precrime unit and is himself accused of the future murder of a
man he hasn't even met.
Top Strategic Tech Themes
Data Fabric
• Data is incredibly valuable
• Data is used to make decisions
• Data is used to make predictions
• Data is unfortunately siloed between application
• Data Fabric allows you to pull data from across a variety of sources
therefore making it useable wherever its needed
How It's Used Today: The Finnish city of Turku found its
innovation held back by gaps in its data. By integrating
fragmented data assets, it was able to reuse data, reduce time
to market by two-thirds, and create a monetizable data fabric.
Cybersecurity Mesh
• Just as Data is important, Security is
even more important
• That Data is scattered across a variety
of platforms so its important to keep
those safe from tampering (removal,
edits, etc).
How It's Used Today: An organization in the technology space
was struggling to create value from its threat intelligence
program. Using a cybersecurity mesh approach, they integrated
multiple data feeds from distinct security products to better
identify and respond more quickly to incidents.
Privacy-Enhancing Computation
• Continuing on with our theme of “data” – data is also being used for
AI Models, building analytics, and insight. But data also has privacy
concerns attached to it.
• As data is transmitted, shared, or used – the concept of encrypting or
splitting out sensitive data is a trend so that data can still be used as
informal without compromising confidentiality.
How It's Used Today: DeliverFund is a U.S.-based
nonprofit with a mission to tackle human
trafficking. Its platforms use homomorphic
encryption so partners can conduct data searches
against its extremely sensitive data, with both the
search and the results being encrypted. In this way,
partners can submit sensitive queries without
having to expose personal or regulated data at any
point.
Cloud-Native Platforms
• As more things are being moved to the “cloud”
(or off premise) but not all applications can
simply be moved in such manner.
How It's Used Today: A major Indian bank built a cloud-native
platform to create a portfolio of new digital financial services.
The bank was able to reduce the time to open an account to
just 6 minutes and add instant digital payments. Deployment of
a new microservices architecture enabled the integration of
savings, virtual debit card and credit card services, allowing the
system to easily scale to over 3.5 million transactions in two
months.
Sculpting Change Themes
Composable Applications
• How It's Used Today: Ally Bank has
created PBCs representing repeatable
capabilities such as fraud alerting, which
its fusion teams can assemble in low-
code environments, saving over 200,000
hours of manual effort.
Hyperautomation
• How It's Used Today: A global oil and gas
company has 14 concurrent
hyperautomation initiatives. These
initiatives include targeted task
automation, industrializing over 90
different areas including intelligent
document processing, and automation of
geoscience and offshore oil drilling
operations. Decisions on what to
automate are made strategically and are
premised on targeted business outcomes
for either quality, time to market,
business agility or innovation for new
business models.
Sculpting Change Themes
Decision Intelligence
• How It's Used Today: Product-
centric organizations can create
a competitive edge in strategic
product decisions by using
decision intelligence to analyze
competitor strategies and
evaluate historic decisions.
AI Engineering
• How It's Used Today: Unity
Health Hospital in Toronto
recognizes that AI credibility is
critical for acceptance by its
physicians. Its fusion teams work
to build trust by showing
physicians the reliability of AI
results — and the gaps.
Distributed Enterprise
Thanks a lot COVID!
• Employees needed to rapidly
shift to working remotely and
needed different tools and
increased flexibility.
Consumers Want Easier Access
• Consumers aren’t as available
via the traditional physical
methods and also want things
delivered to them quickly,
remotely, and at their leisure.
Total Experience
• How It's Used Today: Fidelity Spire uses a
total experience approach in its financial
services. Analytics and AI learn client
behaviors to proactively respond to a
client’s next action and to create realistic
training simulations for staff. Unified
identity services help clients move easily
through self-service onboarding and
provide integration to the advisor’s view,
across multiple touchpoints.
Generative AI
• We commonly understand AI as something to
produce an answer, conclusion, or
recommendation.
• Generative AI takes sample data and makes new,
original, and realistic outputs.
How It's Used Today: The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority has
used generative AI to create synthetic payment data, from 5
million records of real payment data. The synthetic dataset will
be used to create new fraud models without revealing
individuals’ data.

Former Army Intelligence Support Activity operative Sameen Shaw joins the pair in their quest.
  • 10. Theme 2: Accelerating growth • Many of the technologies on the horizon can help accelerate growth in organizations. • Example: Digital Assistants or digital twins representation that have an opportunity to solve technical issues, recommend books, and more. These can be chatbots, robots, smart speakers, etc.
  • 11. A boy tries to stop his father from dating by programming their computerized house to be a surrogate mother.
  • 12. Theme 3: Sculpting change • Everyone's favorite word “change” is a theme for 2022. • The concept is “You must anticipate and influence change to mitigate risk.”
  • 13. Based on a story by famed science fiction writer Philip K. Dick, "Minority Report" is an action-detective thriller set in Washington D.C. in 2054, where police utilize a psychic technology to arrest and convict murderers before they commit their crime. Tom Cruise plays the head of this Precrime unit and is himself accused of the future murder of a man he hasn't even met.

  • 16. Data Fabric • Data is incredibly valuable • Data is used to make decisions • Data is used to make predictions • Data is unfortunately siloed between application • Data Fabric allows you to pull data from across a variety of sources therefore making it useable wherever its needed
  • 17. How It's Used Today: The Finnish city of Turku found its innovation held back by gaps in its data. By integrating fragmented data assets, it was able to reuse data, reduce time to market by two-thirds, and create a monetizable data fabric.
  • 18. Cybersecurity Mesh • Just as Data is important, Security is even more important • That Data is scattered across a variety of platforms so its important to keep those safe from tampering (removal, edits, etc). How It's Used Today: An organization in the technology space was struggling to create value from its threat intelligence program. Using a cybersecurity mesh approach, they integrated multiple data feeds from distinct security products to better identify and respond more quickly to incidents.
  • 19. Privacy-Enhancing Computation • Continuing on with our theme of “data” – data is also being used for AI Models, building analytics, and insight. But data also has privacy concerns attached to it. • As data is transmitted, shared, or used – the concept of encrypting or splitting out sensitive data is a trend so that data can still be used as informal without compromising confidentiality.
  • 20. How It's Used Today: DeliverFund is a U.S.-based nonprofit with a mission to tackle human trafficking. Its platforms use homomorphic encryption so partners can conduct data searches against its extremely sensitive data, with both the search and the results being encrypted. In this way, partners can submit sensitive queries without having to expose personal or regulated data at any point.
  • 21. Cloud-Native Platforms • As more things are being moved to the “cloud” (or off premise) but not all applications can simply be moved in such manner. How It's Used Today: A major Indian bank built a cloud-native platform to create a portfolio of new digital financial services. The bank was able to reduce the time to open an account to just 6 minutes and add instant digital payments. Deployment of a new microservices architecture enabled the integration of savings, virtual debit card and credit card services, allowing the system to easily scale to over 3.5 million transactions in two months.
  • 22. Sculpting Change Themes Composable Applications • How It's Used Today: Ally Bank has created PBCs representing repeatable capabilities such as fraud alerting, which its fusion teams can assemble in low- code environments, saving over 200,000 hours of manual effort. Hyperautomation • How It's Used Today: A global oil and gas company has 14 concurrent hyperautomation initiatives. These initiatives include targeted task automation, industrializing over 90 different areas including intelligent document processing, and automation of geoscience and offshore oil drilling operations. Decisions on what to automate are made strategically and are premised on targeted business outcomes for either quality, time to market, business agility or innovation for new business models.
  • 23. Sculpting Change Themes Decision Intelligence • How It's Used Today: Product- centric organizations can create a competitive edge in strategic product decisions by using decision intelligence to analyze competitor strategies and evaluate historic decisions. AI Engineering • How It's Used Today: Unity Health Hospital in Toronto recognizes that AI credibility is critical for acceptance by its physicians. Its fusion teams work to build trust by showing physicians the reliability of AI results — and the gaps.
  • 24. Distributed Enterprise Thanks a lot COVID! • Employees needed to rapidly shift to working remotely and needed different tools and increased flexibility. Consumers Want Easier Access • Consumers aren’t as available via the traditional physical methods and also want things delivered to them quickly, remotely, and at their leisure.
  • 25. Total Experience • How It's Used Today: Fidelity Spire uses a total experience approach in its financial services. Analytics and AI learn client behaviors to proactively respond to a client’s next action and to create realistic training simulations for staff. Unified identity services help clients move easily through self-service onboarding and provide integration to the advisor’s view, across multiple touchpoints.
  • 26. Generative AI • We commonly understand AI as something to produce an answer, conclusion, or recommendation. • Generative AI takes sample data and makes new, original, and realistic outputs. How It's Used Today: The U.K. Financial Conduct Authority has used generative AI to create synthetic payment data, from 5 million records of real payment data. The synthetic dataset will be used to create new fraud models without revealing individuals’ data.

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Yes – I’ll be making movie references today.
  2. Innovation Trigger - This might signal a breakthrough in the technology development, an initial product launch or interest from the press. This technology is on the rise which sees early adopters investigate their potential benefits. Peak of Inflated Expectations - After an influx of media and press attention this sparks a huge amount of interest and speculation. There is normally heightened expectations of what the technology will be able to achieve and in the development, it sees more failures than successes. Trough of Disillusionment - These technologies tend to not meet media/press and public expectations quick enough and consumers quickly lose interest. We see second or third rounds of venture capital funding to keep projects continuing. Slope of Enlightenment - Although no longer in the media headlines, companies still work on the technology to understand how it can be improved. This is where methodologies and best practices start developing. Plateau of Productivity - This indicated the technology had become stable and its benefits have become widely accepted and demonstrated. There is high-growth adoption where 20-30% of the potential audience has started adopting the innovation. It is also indicated whether the technology is widely applicable or only helps a certain / niche market.
  3. Initial interest came from creating next-generation real-time centers to reduce crime. However, use cases have expanded to include wildfire management, natural disasters, special events, and — particularly relevant — pandemic response The major challenge with this technology is the required amount of interagency cooperation. All of this data (i.e., databases, radio, IoT, mass notifications, license plate readers and geolocation tracking) is typically owned by separate entities. Nevertheless, real-time incident command centers as a service could improve emergency response.  Other technologies in that fall into the engineering trust bucket include sovereign cloud, homomorphic encryption and data fabric.
  4. These interactive, AI-driven representations seem human and behave in “humanlike” ways supported by a range of technologies including conversational UI, CGI and 3D real-time autonomous animation
  5. Use cases abound for these humanoid technologies in HR training, communications, medical care and customer service. COVID-19 has pushed the technology potential to enable no-touch experiences, combat social isolation and provide care to the elderly. Digital humans have appeared in feature films, performed at conferences and acted as brand influencers. Societal roadblocks and ethical concerns, in addition to immature technologies, create challenges for digital humans, but the potential for business impact and differentiation is pushing some organizations to pursue this technology. Other emerging technologies that fall under accelerating growth include multi-experience, industry cloud and quantum ML.
  6. For example, physics-informed AI (PIAI) is AI that can build physically and scientifically sound AI models. PIAI has garnered particular interest as a more efficient option for modeling complex systems like climate and environmental issues, which are challenging to model given their scale.
  7. Traditional digital AI models have limited adaptability, because they can’t generalize beyond the data they were trained on. PIAI creates a more reliable representation of the context and physical product. COVID-19 highlighted the vulnerabilities of business models that are too brittle. PIAI creates a more flexible representation of the context and conditions in which systems operate, allowing developers to build more adaptive systems. It can also create more robust and adaptable business simulation systems, which are more reliable for a wider range of scenarios.  Other emerging technologies in this area include composable applications, composable networks and influence engineering.
  8. These innovations will deliver: • Trusted digital connections for your people and devices everywhere • Solutions to rapidly scale digital creativity anywhere • Innovative capabilities to accelerate business growth beyond today
  9. Within inbuilt analytics reading metadata, data fabric is able to learn what data is being used. Its real value exists in its ability to make recommendations for more, different and better data, reducing data management by up to 70%.
  10. Composable applications are made up of packaged-business capabilities (PBCs) or software-defined business objects. PBCs — for example representing a patient or digital twin — create reusable modules that fusion teams can self-assemble to rapidly create applications, reducing time to market. Increased focuses on growth, digitalization and operational excellence have highlighted a need for better, more widespread automation. Hyperautomation is a business-driven approach to identify, vet and automate as many business and IT processes as possible. It requires the orchestrated use of multiple technologies tools and platforms, including RPA, low-code platforms and process mining tools.
  11. Decisions can be influenced by a multitude of experiences and biases, but in a world of rapid change, organizations must make better decisions, faster. Decision intelligence improves organizational decision making by modeling decisions through a framework. Fusion teams can manage, evaluate and improve decisions based on learnings and feedback. Integrating data, analytics and AI allows the creation of decision intelligence platforms to support, augment and automate decisions. AI provides game-changing solutions to enable organizations to emerge from the pandemic in a strong position, but merely adopting AI won’t do it. Organizations must optimize AI. AI engineering is the discipline of operationalizing updates to AI models, using integrated data and model and development pipelines to deliver consistent business value from AI. It combines automated update pipelines with strong AI governance. By 2025, the 10% of enterprises that establish AI engineering best practices will generate at least three times more value from their AI efforts than the 90% of enterprises that do not.
  12. Distributed enterprise is a virtual-first, remote-first architectural approach to digitize consumer touchpoints and build out experiences to support products. How It's Used Today: • Armoire’s digital dressing room allows customers to try styles virtually. • Merrill Lynch uses geolocation to enable clients to find a nearby financial advisor. • Enterprise drone usage will rise a hundredfold in the next 10 years to support remote customers. By 2023, 75% of organizations that exploit distributed enterprise benefits will realize revenue growth 25% faster than competitors.
  13. Total experience unifies four disciplines: customer experience, user experience, employee experience and multiexperience to create a better experience for consumers and employees. The goal is to interconnect and enhance each of these for a more holistic overall experience for all stakeholders.
  14. The robustness of the models, with a focus on how they support specific business outcomes The link to the real world, potentially in real time for monitoring and control The application of advanced big data analytics and AI to drive new business opportunities The ability to interact with them and evaluate “what if” scenarios
