3. FOR THE past three years I have been talking about the need and importance for a single African Gaming
Trade Show, and as much as I have been involved in founding, launching, promoting and ensuring the
success of Gambling Indaba - Africa’s fledgling trade event - it has now become obvious that the exist-
ing event requires a professional international hand to steer it, and take an African show to its natural
progression. As such, I have parted ways with Gambling Indaba and am very pleased to announce that
Clarion Gaming - the extremely professional team behind the world’s largest gambling trade event - ICE
Totally Gaming in London - that draws over 30 000 attendees, has entered the African continent with
Gaming Africa - a free-to-attend event for Regulators and Operators from across the continent to be
held in Johannesburg o 24 & 25 October 2017.

Sun International unveils new
Sun Meropa Hotel
Saturday, 29 July 2017 marked the start of an exciting new era for Sun Meropa with the official
unveiling of a new hotel at the complex. The opening of the upmarket Sun Meropa Hotel comes less
than a year since Sun International and the Domba Empowerment Corporation (Pty) Ltd. announced
the expansion plans for the complex. Construction workers and equipment have swarmed the site
since September 2016 to complete the project ahead of schedule.
SUN INTERNATIONAL’S R76-million investment in
the hotel at Sun Meropa forms part of the company’s

stimulus for the region, through job creation
and tourism to the area. Approximately 475 jobs
were created directly and indirectly through the
development, with the majority of labour sourced from
the local community.
Sun Meropa’s General Manager, Peter Guthrie

commitment to supporting the city’s economic
priorities, and growing Polokwane into a destination of

enhance Sun Meropa’s appeal so as promote tourism
to the city and thereby contribute to the local economy.
By enhancing Sun Meropa with a quality hotel, offering
a high standard of accommodation, we believe we
can increase our contribution to economic growth and
tourism in the area.

has been a demanding, yet exciting, construction
phase. With the largest, contemporary casino floor in
Polokwane, a selection of dining and entertainment
options and our beautiful new hotel, Sun Meropa is

Clarion Announce
launch of Gaming Africa
EXPLAINING her expectations for gaming’s latest brand,
Kate Chambers, Managing Director of Clarion Gaming, said:
“Wherever we operate in the world we do so at the request
of the market. I would draw parallels with the development of
Juegos Miami, which was launched following requests from
operators who wanted us to develop a bespoke event. This is
exactly what we are doing with Gaming Africa and will assess
the response and the market dynamics before confirming our
plans for 2018.
“Any similarities with ICE will be based around the
standards of organisation, of content and of professionalism
that we are bringing to this new event. Whilst there is huge
growth in Africa, it takes many decades of nurturing to develop
an event anywhere close to the scale of ICE, which in 2017
comprised over 500 exhibitors occupying 42,000 sqm of stand
space. Gaming Africa will be an event where operators and
regulators can meet, share knowledge and move forwards in a
strategic and sustainable manner.”
She added: “We know from the many conversations that we’ve
had with the market, not just in Africa but also throughout the gaming
world, how important training is in terms of raising standards and
creating a professional and sustainable industry. To satisfy this, we
will be bringing the highly acclaimed ‘Totally Gaming Academy’ master
classes to Gaming Africa, offering full training streams covering online,
land based, sports betting and affiliate sectors.”
The Gaming Africa agenda has been designed specifically with
operators and regulators in mind, providing a line-up of expert
speakers to help identify the opportunities for business growth. Topics
being debated at Gaming Africa include:
Africa’s Growing Economy – what sort of influence the dynamics of
the economy might have on the gaming industry;
Payments: is Cash Still King? – learn how to replicate the success
of the Kenyan market’s use of Mpesa and unlock the full potential of
digital gaming in Africa;
Does Being Responsible Pay? – explore the argument and uncover
examples of how this has worked successfully in other jurisdictions;
Anti-Money Laundering and Sports Integrity – discover key
solutions to one of the largest inhibitors of progress for the African
gaming industry;
Moving Forward with External Investment – explore the international
perspective on African market entry, the operational needs of the
market and the domestic view on foreign partnerships;
Best Ways to Manage Public Relations – determine how the
gaming industry can work together to change perceptions and better
communicate the social benefits of a thriving, sustainable market.
Gaming Africa will also feature a series of Regional Roundtables
covering East, West and South Africa, and where the emphasis will be
on the sharing of ideas, challenges and market opportunities.

Problem Gambling on the Rise
amongst Women
Chances are that you consider problem gaming to
be a “man’s issue”. But the reality is that as many as
51% of all South African women gamble; what’s more,
female problem gamblers are likely to be more severely
affected by the condition.
in a cycle of problem gambling. This may be changing, though, as more women
are becoming attracted to online gambling, perceived to be safer than land-based
venues.
Men and women gamble for different reasons, too. While both may use gam-
ing as a stress release, women are more likely to take this to a dangerous degree.
Sinclair notes that this may explain women’s extensive use of slot machines, which
becomeanunhealthycopingmechanismtoescapestress,lonelinessandboredom.
“When gaming serves a psychological need like this, there is a greater likelihood
that the individual will develop a problematic habit,”she says, noting that gambling
to earn income may also heighten the risk. Men, on the other hand, may fall into
the gambling grey area when they become preoccupied with the game, or when
their feelings about winning or ego distort their perception about what the health
of their habit.
Sinclair observes that women’s health is negatively affected by health issues
associated by gambling. In general, problem gamblers may present with a wide
rangeofconditions,rangingfromtachycardiatoangina,cirrhosisandotherliverdis-
ease.Added to this, females with gambling disorders are more likely to experience
chronic bronchitis, fibromyalgia and migraines, along with lower general health,
than women who don’t have an addiction.
There is also a link between problem gambling and intimate partner violence
(IPV). Although Sinclair says that the nature of this relationship has yet to be fully
determined, unsteady employment and clinical anger issues, impulsiveness and
alcohol and substance abuse play a role in both.
Sinclair emphasises the importance of obtaining help, whether for you or for
a family member or friend. SARGF offers a free, anonymous hotline and provides
eight free face-to-face counselling sessions, to equip problem gamblers with the
skillstheyneedtoovercometheiraddiction.Inseverecases,thefoundationwillalso

SO SAYS Heidi Sinclair, Treatment and Counselling Manager at the South African
Responsible Gambling Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that has been set
up to promote responsible gambling in South Africa. She notes, too, that gambling
addiction takes a shorter time to set in amongst female gamers than among their
male counterparts.
Take Lesego**, a marketing consultant from Alexandra, for example. Lesego’s
started visiting casinos to escape from the twin pressures of a new job and financial
stress.At first,it was fun,glamorous and exciting – especially as she won R15 000
in one of her first plays on a slot machine. But as she took more time out for her
secret habit, lying to her family about what she was doing, and digging herself into
a cycle of debt, the fun started wearing off. During the two years she grappled with
her addiction to gambling, she won only R17 000 – yet she was trapped in a cycle
of emotional highs at the thrilling prospect of the win, then depression when that
prospect remained unfulfilled.
Sinclair notes that, like Lesego, many female gamblers experience intense
anxiety. This is typical of the condition, which is most often accompanied by other
disorders. But while this may take the form of psychological issues with women,
male gamblers usually often present with alcoholism or drug addiction, she says.
Sinclair adds that men are also more likely to participate in several forms of
gaming, more often, and are usually willing to spend more on their gaming. In
contrast, women’s gambling frequently centres around activities that require little
strategy,suchasslotmachinesorbingo,anditistheseactivitiesthatmaytrapthem

Sun International Rises against
Hunger at GrandWest
Graceland Casino Donates R1.5m to
Build a School Hall
THE INITIATIVE, in collaboration with Rise Against Hunger (previously Stop Hunger Now), was
part of a nationwide drive, with similar food packing events taking place simultaneously at
three Sun International properties, The Boardwalk in Port Elizabeth, Time Square in Pretoria
and the Wild Coast Sun in Port Edward, as well as four other venues across the country. The
national target was to pack 3 million meals on the day.
Each meal box contains 36 meal bags which in turn contain six meals each. The contents
are carefully planned to provide for the nutritional needs of children, including rice, soya, soup
mix and a vitamin sachet containing 23 essential vitamins and minerals. To commemorate
this special day, volunteers who took part in the food packing drive at GrandWest placed their
multi coloured handprints on special commemorative benches that will be placed all through-
out the GrandWest Complex. These will serve as remembrance of this special day.
“Alleviating hunger is close to Sun International’s heart and GrandWest is privileged to
have been involved in this exceptional food packaging initiative for the third consecutive year.
We thank all of our volunteers who worked tirelessly to package meals. You have made a dif-
ference,”says Mervyn Naidoo,General Manager at GrandWest.
The 2017 food packing challenge was buoyed by the International Mandela Day event in
2015 when some 1.2 million meals were packed on one day. This was followed by the Follow
the Sun meal packing drive in 2016 when just over 3 million meals were packed.
Faculty and students are very excited
about the project as the hall will be
used to write exams, to accommodate
large classes and school events. During
his thank you speech at the breaking
ground event the Graceland GM noted
that the hall will also benefit the eM-
balenhle Community. KI Twala will hire
outthe venue to Churches and for com-
munity events. Income generated from
the hiring of the venue will be used to
furtherupgradetheschoolfacilities(Sci-
ence Lab, Computer room). Graceland
also donated 20TV’s to the school.
Spirits ran high at GrandWest on International Mandela Day (18
July 2017) as some 1 400 volunteers from Sun International
and other caring businesses united to Rise Against Hunger to
commemorate the late Nelson Mandela’s birthday. Amongst the
volunteers were employees from GrandWest, The Table Bay
and Golden Valley and members of the media. In packaging
lines organised in the Market Hall, teams worked busily for 67
minutes each to pack meal parcels for needy children. By the
end of the day, 689 boxes, comprising 142 560 meals had
been packed at GrandWest
Graceland Hotel Casino and Country Club together with the Southern Highveld Community Development trust
(SHCDT) has donated R1.5million rand to build a school hall at the KI Twala Secondary School in eMbalenhle,
the building will be constructed by SSZ Civils & Allied (Pty) Ltd. Groundwork preparations commenced on the

Women ‘own their thrones’
with Tsogo Sun and Proudly SA
EXPLAINING the theme, Candy Tothill, Tsogo Sun’s GM of Corporate Af-
fairs, at the lunch quoted Marion Williamson: “Our deepest fear is not
that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond
measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. We ask
ourselves, who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actu-
ally, who are you not to be?...”
The glamourous event featured TV presenter Leanne Manas as MC,
welcome addresses by Tsogo Sun’s Candy Tothill and Happy MaKhumalo
Ngidi, Chief Officer of Marketing & Communications, Proudly South Af-
rican, and the post-lunch keynote address by Basetsana Kumalo. Excel-
lent entertainment was provided by The Sax Player, Rike Coetzer, and
later by brilliant South African comedienne, Khanyisa Bunu, who will be
opening for Trevor Noah in his tour which runs in Johannesburg for three
days from 9 August.
Proudly South African’s Ngidi said, “This year Tsogo Sun and Proudly
South African partnered to present this spectacular lunch which ac-
knowledges how remarkable women are. We each own our throne today
and celebrate together our individual and collective strength.”
Tothill noted that Tsogo Sun’s celebration of women is born of the
reality that the group bucks the global trend in its representation of
women in its workforce – 53% of Tsogo Sun’s 14 500 employees are
women. “This focus is also strongly reflected in the fact that 45% of
Tsogo Sun’s management are women, and 39% of our executives and
senior leadership comprise women. Senior leadership is thus substan-
tially higher than the national average of 29% reported in the 2017 Grant
Thornton International Business Report.”
Through its far-reaching Citizenship portfolio, Tsogo Sun also up-
lifts women in empowerment programmes that include Tsogo Sun En-
trepreneurs that supports 200 businesses across South Africa, 164 of
which are women-owned, and the Miss Earth leadership development
programme that empowers hundreds of young women to become envi-
ronmental youth ambassadors and role models in our society.
Invited guests at the Tsogo Sun Women’s Day event included busi-
nesswomen, entrepreneurs, media, drivers of change in corporate and
community environments, and women who share Tsogo Sun’s passion
for building up other women.
Tothill urged the guests, as beacons of hope for all young women
who are starting out in their careers, “to play your part in creating a
strong sisterhood of support for yourselves, for each other, and for them,
and continue to be shining examples of what it truly means to ‘own your
throne’.”
Tsogo Sun’s portfolio includes over 100 hotels and 14 casino and
entertainment destinations throughout South Africa, Africa, the Sey-
chelles and Abu Dhabi.
Tsogo Sun and Proudly South African partnered to host a lavish ‘Women in Business’ lunch on
8 August at Southern Sun Hyde Park, under the theme of, ‘Own your throne’, with celebrity
and businesswoman Basetsana Kumalo, Executive Chairman and CEO of Basetsana Woman
Investment Holdings, delivering the keynote address.

Sibaya Casino provides
help to Children’s Home
NWGB Assists Pre-School as part of CSI Projects
“THE BUILDING is dilapidated, the toilets are not working properly, the
yard is not fenced. As you can see we are a fairly impoverished com-
munity.
The North-West Gambling Board became aware of the conditions of
the pre-school during its Mandela Day initiatives. The Board has to date
donated mattresses, blankets and toys for the children. CEO of the Board
Mr Fortune Sekgaphane has promised communities members that the
institution he leads will explore different avenues to help the community
achieve their dream of creating an enabling environment for teaching
and learning to thrive.
FOR OVER 80 years, every year, over 1 000 children make their way to the
home where camps for vulnerable and orphaned children are hosted. Today,
the home provides structured educational adventure camps for orphaned
and vulnerable children which are overseen by trained adventure educa-
tors. This offers children from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to
enjoy “time out” from the harsh realities of life and just for those few days
know and enjoy the freedom of being a child. Due to the buildings being old
and their proximity to the beach, the home needed some tender loving care.
Commenting on the refurbishment project, Chairman of Sibaya and
Trustee of the Sibaya Community Trust, Vivian Reddy, said: “We are de-
lighted to be in a position to offer the home assistance with upgrading some
of their facilities as well as purchase resources which are necessary for
accommodating the young children visiting there. For more than eight de-
cades, the Mercury Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home has provided sanc-
tuary and adventures for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and we
would like to see the home continuing to do so for many years to come.”
The Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home is a registered Non-Profit,
Public Benefit Organisation with the sole mandate to provide holidays for
under privileged and vulnerable children from child-headed households,
paediatric hospices, children’s homes and disadvantaged schools. They
have been in operation for over 80 years and host over 1000 children
annually.
Facilities include a swimming pool with a water slide and splash pool,
an obstacle course, climbing frames and swings, trampolines, volley ball,
netball, a soccer field, a large cinema screen for screening movies, a sun-
room, braai area and picnic area. For many of the children visiting the home,
these facilities and activities are a whole new experience. The children re-
ceive three nutritious meals daily and enjoy supervised workshops.
“We have seen how dire the situation is here at Masupologo. And
over and above what we have donated here, we will speak to our licens-
ees and come up with a wide range of intervention measures to help the
community and the pre-school.”
The North-West Gambling Board has on previous occasions em-
barked on projects of a similar kind with the sole purpose of galvanis-
ing industry leaders to help in fighting the triple challenges of poverty,
unemployment and inequalities confronting the downtrodden and eco-
nomically marginalised communities in the North-West province.
The Department of Social Development in the province has promised
to work hand in glove with the Board to see to the success of the Masu-
pologo Pre-School project. The department has on previous occasions
supported initiatives of the Board aimed at changing the lives of the
impoverished for the better.
The Bafokeng Ba Makgokgwane Traditional Council has given some
thumps to all the initiatives aimed at assisting the community in the
dealing with many of the socio-economic challenges confronting resi-
dents. The council has also promised to avail community members to
assist in the renovation of the pre-school once construction starts. This
multi-faceted approach is centred on the North West government fifth
administration philosophy of SAAM-TREK-SAAM-WERK.
Improving comfort and safety for the young visitors to the Mercury
Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home is the goal of the extensive
refurbishment project that Sibaya Community Trust will be rolling out
in September 2017. The Trust will fund renovations to the home’s
ablutions and main hall, as well as the purchase of equipment, cutlery,
crockery and linen to the tune of R520 000 as part of its commitment to
vulnerable children. The grant was officially handed over to the Mercury
Hibberdene Children’s Holiday Home on 18 August 2017.
The North West Gambling Board has through its Corporate Social Investment and Socio-Economic Development (SED) fund
committed to help the impoverished community of Makgokgwane village outside Mahikeng revamp their pre-school. The pre-
school was built in 1983 by missionaries after the community was forcefully removed from their land in the late 1970’s near Koster
in Rustenburg. Since then the pre-school has never been renovated due to limited funds. Efforts by the community to source
funding from private donors have not been successful over the years. Community leader, Mpho Scheepers says the pre-schools
has an enrolment of only ten children and many more could not be registered due a to a combination of socio-economic factors.

Benefit Trust spent
67 Minutes at Local
Primary School
“YOUTH DEVELOPMENT is one of the cornerstones of the South African National
Development Plan, and a central pillar of Peermont’s community development
efforts,” says Tshidi Madima, PCBT Chair. “Being able to enhance the learning
experience for schoolchildren at the grassroots level is a privilege for us, and
vital in nurturing the next generation of leaders.”
Ntsikana Primary was founded in 1985 with limited resources and is now
considered one of the top performing primary schools in Daveyton. The school
has converted two classrooms into a library and is working closely with the local
community library to ensure collaboration on upliftment programmes, such as
the annual readathon, spelling bee and ‘Mental Maths’ competitions.
As Mandela Day is during the school holidays, the trustees have returned to
the school on 26 July 2017 to officially unveil the library in the presence of all
the learners. Learners also received a lunch pack sponsored by Eurest.
The PCBT sponsors many other programmes, including a comprehen-
sive Grade R programme, the Lesedi Scarce Skills Programme, which offers
young people from Ekurhuleni the opportunity to complete trades, and The
Peermont Hotel School, which gives young people access to the hospitality
industry to alleviate poverty, and is expected to benefit over 1,000 candidates
over 3 years, offering the industry and internationally recognized City & Guilds
certificate.
For Mandela Day this year, 18 July 2017, the Peermont
Community Benefit Trust (PCBT) sponsored the revamp
and restocking of the school library at Ntsikana Primary in
Daveyton. The PCBT trustees and employees of Emperors
Palace and Peermont gave 67 minutes of their time working
in the newly revamped library and providing the school with
a wide range of books to promote literacy. Mandela Day
commemorates the sacrifices made by former statesman
Nelson Mandela, and aims to promote change and upliftment
for those who are less fortunate. In South Africa, poor literacy
is responsible for the inadequate education of hundreds of
learners. According to research from Stellenbosch University,
for every 100 students who started school 12 years ago,
only 48 of them reach matric.
The revamped library at Ntsikana Primary School in Daveyton was
officially unveiled after being refurbished for Mandela Day this year by
the Peermont Community Benefit Trust (PCBT), a Peermont Hotels, Casinos
and Resorts corporate social investment initiative, supported by Emperors
Palace. In attendance for the unveiling were Peermont CEO, Nigel Atherton,
the school’s principal, Boniswa Nhlangothi, Trust Chairperson, Tshidi
Madima and the new Emperors Palace General Manager, Clive Tavener.
Apart from giving the library a new look the Trust also assisted in re-
stocking and cataloguing the reading centre and, to celebrate the unveiling
on Wednesday, all the learners and staff at the school were given lunch
packs sponsored by Eurest and Compass.
Reading and improved literacy levels are the foundation of a good
education and to this end, as part of its commitment to enhance the
learning experience for primary school going learners in Ekurhuleni,
the Peermont Community Benefit Trust (PCBT) has refurbished the
library at Ntsikana Primary School in Daveyton for Mandela Day this
year. After assisting with the unveiling of the restocked and revamped
library, Peermont CEO, Nigel Atherton took some time out to read with
two of the learners who will benefit from the library, Sikho Magubeni
(11) and Abulele Mhlahlo (10).

Scorebet Site Opening in Zeerust
Creates Jobs for the Less-Priviledged
NORTH WEST Gambling Board Legal Manager, Jacob Montshioa main-
tains the Board is committed to change this narrative. He mentioned this
during the site opening of Scorebet in Zeerust in North West province.
He insisted that over and above the mandate to regulate gambling in the
province they are duty bound to create economic opportunities for the
previously disadvantaged individuals and communities.
“One key element is for the gambling operations to have at least
sixty percent ownership by previously disadvantaged individuals.”
Mr Montshioa believes that creation of employment should top the
agenda of any institution particularly when one looks at the challenges
of poverty and income inequalities confronting the province.
“This will surely contribute towards eliminating illegal gambling, and
also assist in terms of job creations as well as pushing for illegal opera-
tions to see the importance of obtaining a license” said Mr Montshioa.
BY SELLO TATAI
To date over one hundred permanent job opportunities have
been created in the three operations recently opened in Rustenburg,
Klerksdorp and Zeerust. More in-direct jobs were created during the
construction phase of these operations. Business development manager,
Tracey Kotze has indicated that more job opportunities will be created
in the month of August as they are looking to open more sites in the
province. This will see more than forty-seven job opportunities being
created.
“I am very ecstatic that they’ve opened the 1st Scorebet in Zeerust,
and aslo the fact that we are in the process of opening three more op-
erations sites during the month of August” Kotze said.
The North-West Gambling Board has reiterated that its primary role
is to diversify the gambling sector in the province for the benefit of all
South Africans, irrespective of race, gender and class.
It’s a profitable industry
with a turn-over of
hundreds of millions
per annum. And sadly,
it hasn’t reached the
shores of the previously
disadvantaged
communities many
years since the dawn
of democracy. In
an instance where
Blacks occupy the
high echelons of these
companies, they
are simply there for
cosmetic purposes.

30 I Gaming For Africa I August / September 2017
HAVING BEEN fascinated with hotels and wanting to work in
the hospitality industry from a young age,Leann Murugan is
proof that dreams do come true, with her recent appointment
as General Manager of the Southern Sun Pietermaritzburg
hotel.She shares,“Hospitality is not a job.It’s a way of life.”
Forming part of the Golden Horse complex, the
property’s casino offering attracted Leann.“I enjoy working at a casino property
as I get to experience both the hospitality and gaming aspects of the business,”
she says.
The former drum majorette has enjoyed an exciting career in the
industry, progressing through the ranks at various hotel chains around
Durban. She also ventured out of the country for a six-month stint at a golf
estate in Miami, Florida.
In 2012,Leann joined theTsogo Sun team asAssistant General Manager at
Garden Court South Beach and,in less than two years, was promoted to General
Manager of Garden Court Blackrock in Newcastle.
In her position,Leann is focussed on customer service, relationship building
and people management. The growth and development of her team is her top
priority. With‘have fun’ as her motto, she always tries to find ways of ensuring
that those she manages enjoy their time at work.
According to Leann, the most rewarding part of her role is receiving positive
feedback from guests and seeing people grow in their careers. What she loves
most about working at the Southern Sun Pietermaritzburg hotel is the property’s
culture, values and commitment to developing staff.
