• What does it mean to you? 
• What does social media mean 
for businesses? 
• Businesses have to compete for 
reach and to get in front of 
their target audience.
They aren’t on Facebook to follow 
businesses…they’re on there to see baby 
pictures, sunsets, catch up with old friends, 
take funny pictures of their pets, document 
the food they eat and generally anything 
and everything else but caring about your 
business.
EVERYTHING is branded 
• To get your business mentioned on social 
media means you get traffic. Traffic = sales. 
• It’s word-of-mouth, but spreads even faster. 
• For example…

What Platform Should You Be On? 
• All of them! 
• Just kidding 
• It honestly doesn’t matter if it’s just you and 
you’re just setting up personal accounts.

• Resources (time, training, always evolving 
platforms) 
• It depends on your business and most 
importantly, your audience

Facebook 101 
• How many people here are on Facebook? 
• It’s obviously very different when you’re a 
business trying to get noticed on FB. 
• The algorithm and structure is always 
changing. 
• It’s becoming pay-to-play to reach your fans. 
• Retargeting and sponsored ads are only going 
to keep increasing. :/
Guidelines for Businesses to Follow 
• Be professional 
• Maintain a consistent tone 
• Vary the content 
• Don’t be too salesy (80/20 rule) 
• Provide value above and beyond everything 
else!
Things to Avoid 
• Oversharing (TMI) 
• Posting too much or not enough 
• Improper grammar/typos 
• Too many #########

Speaking of #s – Twitter! 
• Twitter is similar for both personal and 
business use. 
• You’re restricted to 140 characters so it’s 
basically like a text message everyone can see. 
• Don’t be scared or confused by the @ and #

YouTube is the King of Video 
• YouTube is the 2nd largest search engine in the 
world. Why? 
• Businesses can use video to 
do walkthroughs, tutorials, 
webinars, commercials or 
anything else that fits their 
brand or caters to their 
audience. 
• Speaking of catering…
Something for Everyone on YouTube 
There’s no way either of these 
‘brands’ would have over 700,000 
and 900,000 subscribers on any 
other platform.

• All about your network (friends, co-workers) 
• Highest average user age 
• Highest average household income per user 
• One reason to never burn bridges 
• Be professional 
• Keep things updated and current 
• Join groups 
• Ad value to be seen as an expert or influencer
How Do You Present Yourself? 
• How would a potential employer view your social 
media profiles? 
• If you’d be embarrassed to show your Mom… 
• Take the time to clean up your profiles before you 
learn a hard lesson. Employers DO use Linkedin.
Pinterest – Ruled by Women 
• Perfect platform for: crafts, babies, weddings, 
cooking, baking, decorating and fashion 
• 70% of the user base is female 
• Photo driven site 
• ‘Boards’ are categories; centered around your 
interests 
• Users will ‘pin’ to share w/ others 
• Fastest growing platform
Scrolling through Pinterest with the 
ability to stop and pin something… 
Pinterest board’s help separate 
content into sections to help 
with your search.
Google+ - The Life Support Platform? 
• Do you have a Google+ account? 
• Currently in a state of flux 
• Blogs and authors get a slight boost for SEO 
• Big focus on communities w/ a high level of 
engagement (if you’re using it) 
• Google Hangouts
The Next Big Thing?
Instagram Has Staying Power 
• Bought out by Facebook 
• People love pictures and using filters 
• Selfies?!?! 
• Businesses can combine pictures and #’s to 
run campaigns and contests to generate more 
traffic and attention
Mistakes to Avoid 
• DON’T troll 
• DON’T give bad customer service 
• DON’T have typos -- proofread (shorthand is fine) 
• Think about what you’re sharing and why? Is 
there a purpose? 
• Don’t leave questions go without a response!
