Proprietary technology - Solar tower
Operating principle
A circular array of heliostats (2 axis
tracking mirror) is used to concentrate
sunlight to a central receiver mounted
on the top of a tower
A heat transfer medium in the
receiver absorbs the highly
concentrated radiation and converts it
into thermal energy to be used by a
turbine
Key features
High temperatures high yields
High temperature tower under
development with higher efficiency
and lower costs
Energy can be stored (steam/ molten
salts)
Tower or Central Receiver

9
Proprietary technology - Parabolic trough
Operating principle
Parabolic troughs are used to track the
sun and concentrate sunlight onto the
thermally efficient receiver tubes placed
in the trough focal line
In these tubes, a thermal transfer fluid is
circulated and pumped through a series
of heat exchangers to produce steam
The steam is converted to electrical
energy in a conventional steam turbine
generator
Key features
A mature technology
Energy storage available using molten
salt
Can be hybridized with conventional
fossil fuel plants
Developing direct steam generation
Trough

Proprietary technology - Concentrated PV
Operating principle
Sunlight is concentrated on small,
highly-efficiency photovoltaic cells using
Fresnel lenses
2-axis tracking increases annual output
and produces more consistent power
throughout the day
Increased inverter efficiency due to
advanced electronics and maximum
power point tracking
Key features
Lowest levelized cost of electricity (LCOE)
of solar electric technologies
New technology, proprietary Abengoa
product
Ideal for areas with high direct normal
irradiance (DNI)
High Concentrated PV
