Many organizations have chosen to go with a hybrid cloud architecture to give them the best of both worlds: the scalability and ease of deployment of cloud, and the security, latency & egress benefits of local storage. Persistence of data on such an architecture can follow a write-back mode, where data is first written to local storage, and then uploaded to cloud asynchronously. However, this means that the applications cannot utilize the availability and durability guarantees of cloud, and the availability of storage is the availability SLA of on-premise storage, which is almost always less than the availability SLA of Cloud. By switching the order, i.e. performing uploads to cloud, and then hydrating on-premise storage, applications get the benefit of availability SLAs of cloud. In our case, this allowed us to move from three 9’s of availability (99.9%) of local storage to four 9’s (99.99%). Instead of uploading in write-back mode, we duplicated the incoming stream to upload to both cloud and on-premise. For on-premise uploads that failed, we leveraged Kafka’s event processing to queue up objects that need to be egressed out of Cloud into the local storage. This architecture allowed us to hydrate the local storage with objects uploaded to Cloud. Furthermore, since local storage space is limited, we periodically purged data out of local storage and created a secondary copy of the data on cloud by leveraging Kafka event processing.

Moving away from a single system solution When you think of data, the chances are that you will think of documents and spreadsheets or images and emails. From time to time there are which have come along and increased the amount of data that an individual stores, but historically if you owned a file you also had physical possession of the bits and bytes that formed it.

The first problem faced with big data was the feasibility of processing data at such a high scale. In solving the scale problem, people developed technologies we know today like Kafka, Spark, Presto, Snowflake, etc. Now the problem people face is one of manageability. They no longer ask if they can handle a dataset but rather: How can I move faster when developing data-intensive applications? How do I utilize all of my data and ensure it is high-quality? In this talk, you will learn how lakeFS simplifies maintaining high-quality data lakes in two ways: 1. by providing no-copy, isolated data development environments and 2. enabling CI/CD workflows that allow for automated testing of data.

At Netflix, the big data platform is the foundation for analytics that drive all product decisions that directly impact our customer experience. As for scale, it is one of the top three largest services running at Netflix, in terms of compute power and data size. In this talk, we will take the audience through a journey to understand how we scale the platform to handle the increasing amount of data (over 500 billion events generated daily), the increasing demand of analytics (which translates to compute power), and the increasing number of users dependent on our platform to make business decisions.

Vitess is a cloud-native storage solution that can scale indefinitely. In this session, we will first cover a high level overview of Vitess features, the architecture, and what database workloads are a good fit. Then we will demonstrate how to get started with Vitess on Kubernetes. This will be followed by VTAdmin, the next generation of tooling and UIs for managing large-scale, multi-cluster Vitess deployments, built for developers and operators alike. We will demo resharding using VTAdmin, and will talk about improvements to performance and scalability along the way.

Once you start working with Big Data systems, you discover a whole bunch of problems you won’t find in monolithic systems. Monitoring all of the components becomes a big data problem itself. In the talk, we’ll mention all of the aspects that you should take into consideration when monitoring a distributed system using tools like Web Services, Spark, Cassandra, MongoDB, AWS. Not only the tools, what should you monitor about the actual data that flows in the system? We’ll cover the simplest solution with your day to day open source tools, the surprising thing, that it comes not from an Ops Guy.

ODSC East virtual presentation - The best machine learning, and advanced analytics projects are often stopped when it comes time to move into large scale production, preventing them from ever impacting the business in a meaningful way. Hundreds of hours of work may never get put to use. Python is rapidly becoming the language of choice for scientists and researchers of many types to build, test, train and score models. But when data science models need to go into production, challenges of performance and scale can be a huge roadblock. By combining a Python application with an underlying massively parallel (MPP) database, Python users can achieve a simplified path to production. An MPP database also allows you to do data preparation and data analysis at far greater speeds, accelerating development and testing as well as production performance. It also allows greater numbers of concurrent jobs to run, while also continuously loading data for IoT or other streaming use cases. Analyze data in the database where it sits, rather than first moving it to another framework, then analyzing it, then moving the results, taking multiple performance hits from both CPU and IO for every move and transformation. In this talk, you will learn about combination architectures that can get your work into production, shorten development time, and provide the performance and scale advantages of an MPP database with the convenience and power of Python. Use case examples use the open source Vertica-Python project created by Uber with contributions from Twitter, Palantir, Etsy, Vertica, Kayak and Gooddata.

Open source software is finally getting the recognition it deserves from analysts like Forrester and Gartner as a disruptive force in IT. Over the years, open source has “climbed up the stack” from operating systems to databases and now to business applications where it has established a firm foothold in the content management space. What should enterprises know about open source content management? Is it really just for Web Content Management (WCM) or does it meet the needs of broader Enterprise Content Management (ECM) deployments? Arelarge enterprises doing big, meaningful content management projects with open source or is its appeal limited to subsets of the market? What about Enterprise 2.0 initiatives? Can you assemble an Enterprise 2.0 solution from open source components? How does it compare with something like Sharepoint?

For organisations to successfully adopt data mesh, setting up and maintaining infrastructure needs to be easy. We believe the best way to achieve this is to leverage the learnings from building a ‘central nervous system‘, commonly used in modern data-streaming ecosystems. This approach formalises and automates of the manual parts of building a data mesh. This presentation introduces SpecMesh; a methodology and supporting developer toolkit to enable business to build the foundations of their data mesh.

I presented to the Georgia Southern Computer Science ACM group. Rather than one topic for 90 minutes, I decided to do an UnConference. I presented them a list of 8-9 topics, let them vote on what to talk about, then repeated. Each presentation was ~8 minutes, (Except Career) and was by no means an attempt to explain the full concept or technology. Only to wake up their interest.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
