Gateways To Art Analysis
The figure 1.120 on page 123 of Gateways to Art depicts a 3 dimensional piece of art called Monogram. Inside the work includes
mixed media with taxidermy goat, rubber tire, and a tennis ball. The work was done by Robert Rauschenberg from Sweden. There
is strong emphasis on the goat, making it the focal point of the mass. The installation of the tire is wrapped around the goat's torso,
while the goat is mounted onto the center of the wood frame. The size of the work is monumental compared to other works of art.
The subordination of the painted half of the work prevents the viewer from looking at the plain pieces of wood. The span of the
mount stretches diagonally across the frame. The addition of red paint brings a sense of luminosity to the work. There are
illuminated letters printed of the wood pieces that draws attention to the left half of the piece. The text says Rauschenberg created
the work "as a symbol of himself as a rebel and outcast." The goat relates to a religious perspective as goats used to be offered as a

The most obvious being that they are two completely different types of work. The two dimensional piece (Monogram) presents a
feeling of admiration while the three dimensional piece (Twilight in the Wilderness) presents a feeling of rebellion. Monogram

Gateway Experience: In the beginning of this academic year, I was apprehensive about professors and how they would interact
with their students. However, after meeting with my Gateway instructor and his teaching assistant, my apprehension subsided.

through the lake, disrupting not only you, but the environment, habitat and ecosystem.
The Northern Gateway Project is a major pipeline proposed to carry crude oil from the Alberta Oil Sands to Kitimat British
Columbia. It will provide temporary jobs for 62,700 people for 10 years and will leave 1,150 long–term jobs after the pipeline is

Some stakeholders in the Northern Gateway Project would counter with defending the Enbridge as they plan on using thicker pipe
and horizontal drilling to bore beneath 30 rivers, instead of passing through them. Though they are changing their pipe sizes and
thickness, this new material is being used for the first time and could potentially become a disaster if the pipe breaks and leaves
over the ocean, rivers and/or environments. (5) As stated throughout this piece, First Nations people and their land is in danger if
the Northern Gateway Pipeline is built. If given a larger amount of money, the Coastal First Nations would be capable of defending
their lands and reviewing the Enbridge plans. Unfortunately this has not happened and all we can do is hope for the best.

Gateway to freedom is about the times when the slaves were helped by abolitionists to escape to Canada in hope to find freedom. It
is a book authored by Eric Foner, an American Historian. He is well known for writing about the American political history,
freedom history, historiographies and about the African–American biography. In 2011 he won the Lincoln Prize, the Bancroft Prize
Pulitzer prize for History for his book 'The Fiery trial: Abraham Lincoln and American Slavery'. Gateway to freedom takes us back
to the slave trade period, in New York City which was a significant hub for railway activity. It is also in New York where there was

Foner shows how Gays helped save the fugitives, providing safety homes and aiding them escape to Canada. Gays also provides a
crucial insight on the key role played by the slaves in realizing their freedom. His books 'Reconstruction' and 'Give me Freedom'
show very well the emerging social issues of race, social life and politics in the aspect of improved approaches toward the status of
the blacks in the American society. However, Foner focuses more on the negative aspects, while aspects such as urbanization and
more job opportunities are not looked upon ( Papson & Calarco ,2015).
In 1850, the Compromise was formed as a way of preventing the southerners from withdrawing from the Union. Part of this law,
was the Fugitive Slave act, which aroused many reactions from the public that it ultimately led to the civil war. This Fugitive Slave
Act stated that the southerners were still owners of these slaves that had escaped to the north and that the Northerners had to abide
to it, even though most of their states had illegalized slavery. This law also made it hard for the blacks to have a fair trial as they
were not able to prove whether they were free or not. This led to the blacks in the northern states freeing to Canada in fear of being
returned to slavery and because they did not feel as safe anymore. The Compromise, to keep the southerners in the Union, made
these laws on slaves to favor them. However unexpectedly it made the Abolitionists
