Member Induction healthcheck results – Yorkshire & The Humber Bridget Harris Y&H Member Development Officer Meeting May 18th 2010
If government is changing we will need politicians to change too
manifesto for a modern local politics
research checklist developed with help from member development officers, leadership advisors and research on council's own published programmes
responses So far there's been 260 responses from over 170 Local Authorities, across every region in England  (and Wales)

1. 98% Take photo and contact details 2. 95% Issue new Members with an induction pack  3. 93% Explain about the Council's Code of Conduct 4. 93% Provides IT equipment or financial contribution towards it 5. 93% Collect details to set up allowances and expenses system
6. 91% Carry out 'Day One' basics 7. 90% Contact every member with some immediate contact details 8. 88% Provide training and information about Standards 9. 86% Provide ongoing IT training and expertise 10. 82% Introduce new members to Heads of Departments
1. 81% Don't record training sessions 2. 79% Don't run sessions working in administration and opposition 3. 72% Don't facilitate do ward walks with officers 4. 71% Don't facilitate key meetings in the ward 5. 69% Don't offer new members places on a regional induction programme
6. 62% Don't run pre-election sessions for those interested, on what the role of Councillor entails 7. 60% Achieved accreditation through the Regional and IDeA Charters for Member Development? 8. 56% Don't require members to lead and contribute directly to sessions and their own learning 9. 56% Don't offer a political mentor to support new councillors 10. 54% Don't provide guidance and advice on community leadership
