Wincobank – the ‘Corner Shop Community’ – the majority of Wincobank’s businesses are all on corners! 2 Wincobank still has as many businesses in 2011 as it did before Meadowhall was built.
Clean - Ups WincobankCommonwith the Friends of Wincobank Hill, 3 March 2011 Fife Street with Wincobank TARA, 21 March 2011 Trans Pennine Trail with Travelodge Meadowhall, 25 March 2011
Barrow Road with SCC NEAT team 28 March, 2011 Railway embankment by Network Rail along Ecclesfield Road, Barrow Road and Tyler Street, April 2011 Barrow Road embankment between the railway bridge and start of the crash barrier. Unregistered land cleared by Environmental Services as a one off using Environmental Enforcement budget 9 May 2011 4
River Don and Blackburn Brook by Craig Conway and Andy Isham Environment Agency, July 2011 Woodbury Road (unadopted) an ongoing fly tipping hotspot. Although it is not SCC responsibility they have been cleaning it up as a commitment to the Love Wincobank project and the incidents are starting to decrease. Woodbury Road, February 2011 April, 2011 September, 2011 September, 2011 Land at the top of Woodbury Rd after clearance by SCC’s Enforcement Team when the landowner failed to comply with an Enforcement Order, September 2011 5
Graffiti has been removed throughout the village by Streetforce and other agencies. Once removed, it has not reappeared.
Car Wash, Barrow Road/Fife St, May 2011 and below in Sept with the 8 signs removed from the railings. Fife St,February 2011 March 2011 – signs removed, Network Rail have put it in their budget to replace the crumbling concrete wall. September 2011 – To Let/Sell sign removed, opened as café and repainted. June 2011 – The Highways Agency are pursing removal of the unauthorised signs from their fence put in place by the Blackburn Road car wash. 7 Dara St, March 2011 September 2011 – To Let/Sell sign removed, opened as café and repainted.
The height of the crash barrier on Barrow Road has been increased by Streetforce to stop vehicles driving down ontoTransPennine Trail next to MeadowhallTravelodge. The hole in the boundary wall on Barrow Road has been repaired by Network Rail. Damaged or missing street signs have been replaced on Barrow Road, Newman Road and Vauxhall Road. British Gas has repaired the box at the back of Meadowhall Travelodge. 8
February, 2011 April, 2011 Meadowhall Travelodge has repaired various sections of the broken post and rail fence around their car park which also forms part of the Trans Pennine Trail. Work to the cycle shelter in the Meadowhall Transport Interchange car park was finally completed after an 18 month delay due to the original contractor going out of business. May, 2011 February, 2011 9
September 2011 Fife Street between the two railway bridges, July 2011. February 2011 Three massive trees overhanging Fife Street have been removed for highway safety reasons. The job involved three separate road closures to complete the work. The land is unregistered and work has been carried out by Sheffield City Council. 10
February, 2011 April, 2011 Elm View Lane, Sept, 2011 Streetforce has repainted the white lines on Blackburn Road and unblocked various surface water drains around the village. Ernest Bollington and Chris Wood from Kier have painted the gates and railings at the entrance to Woolley Wood on Ecclesfield Road , September 2011 11
Former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel (now Quirke’s Gym), Chapman Street. The building has just been recommended for Local Listing status. April 2011 Mick Quirke has cleared the extensive embankment to the rear of the chapel of litter and fly tipping deposited from Rockmount Road. Other areas on Chapman Street still need attention, but the former boarded up Wincobank Medical Practice building has been purchased and hopefully will be back in use soon. 12
In the recent Thriving District and Local Centres report (July 2011) it stated that the Health Centre at the junction of Barrow Road and Tyler Street provided a natural focal point, but the street scene needed improving. The NEAT team have been tidying up long grass verges which is a litter trap, but the landscaping outside of the Medical Centre could be improved as it just collects litter. Enforcement action should also be taken against 112 and 114 Barrow Road to install their drives and dropped kerbs. This is next to the medical centre and looks unsightly and has a negative impact on the area. 112 and 114 Barrow Road 13
Before, February 2011 The decommissioned Wincobank gas holders will remain until National Grid sell the land - they will then be dismantled. The fly tipping to the rear of the holders on the TPT was cleaned up in March and the area has remained clean since then. After, September 2011 Sheffield City Council has replaced two missing vehicle gates and repaired another on the TPT. The gates were removed for easy access to the rear of the OutoKumpu site to steal wire and metal while the site was being dismantled. Trans Pennine Trail, September 2011 14
Boxing Glove seats installed September 2010 Footpath installed, September 2010 Tree planting with the community foresters January 2011 – 22 community groups, businesses and individuals sponsored trees. Bulb planting with the NEAT team and Wincobank TARA, November 2010 15 Snowdrops in the garden, January 2011
Tree plaques designed and made by sculptor Owen Cunningham were installed in April, 2011 Wildflowers were sown by Green Estate in April 2011, shown here in flower in July 2011. The fruit trees and bushes this year have produced apples, pears, blackcurrants, redcurrants, raspberries and gooseberries to name a few… 16
Ann Bentley from the Wincobank Tenants and Residents Association has been working very hard to improve the Fife Gardens area. Formerly senior citizen’s flats they are now occupied by a wide range of people, some who have very challenging circumstances. Ann has organised clean up days, bulb and tree planting sessions and has involved the wider Wincobank community. The results have been amazing 17
St Thomas’ Church yard and Rockmount footpath July, 2011 The footpath through St Thomas’ churchyard to Rockmount Road forms an important shortcut link between Fife Street and Newman Road. To go any other way involves a steep hill or a much longer route to the shops/post office etc. Rockmount footpath is unadopted and not maintained. Andrew Redmile from Colas resurfaced this path as a gesture of goodwill when they were carrying out the footpath resurfacing works in Wincobank. 18
St Thomas’ Boxing Club, Newman Road Wincobank has produced 30 boxing champions – 3 World, 6 European, 6 Commonwealth and 15 British. This record is unrivalled anywhere else in the world – including the USA. We want to create a ‘Champions Corner’ at the bottom of Newman Road with metal sculptures of the 3 World Champions (Johnny Nelson, NaseemHamed and Junior Witter). This will create a tourist attraction, promote the high achievement and increase aspiration levels Metal work sculptor, Brian Fell and award winning landscape architect Guy Denton have agreed to work on the project. Both are giving their time freely to create the initial sculpture design and landscape plan in order that we can seek funding for the project. Guy Denton Brendan Ingle and Brian Fell 19
Wincobank’s specialist steel companies... Wincro Steel design and manufacture high integrity stainless steel building systems specified for major building developments throughout Europe. Situated on the corner of Barrow Road and Fife Street. Wincobank still has many companies producing specialist steel products. The fence at the bottom of Fife Street needs replacing now the three trees have been removed along the riverbank. This would be a good opportunity to introduce decorative railings incorporating Wincobank’s steel history. 20
Barrow Road River Don Railway track and embankment, Barrow Road Fife Street Following the clean ups, areas are staying cleaner and litter free. Streetforce has adjusted their street and road sweeping schedule to include the bottom of Fife Street, Barrow Road and Tyler Street . This is to take into account that Meadowhall is an important local shopping centre and therefore the pedestrian routes should have a higher street cleansing priority. The Transport Interchange has installed more bins in the car park area and also on the way out of the Interchange onto Tyler Street. 21
Frontage of the old WMC on Dara Street which is visible from the main shopping areas around Standon Road and Fife Street. Land to the rear of the WMC. The boundary hedge is full of Japanese knotweed, and the land fly tipping and derelict outbuildings. This is the most complained about location in Wincobank. The landowners have not maintained the site although they are now taking steps to improve the area as part of the campaign. 22
We want to create a more striking entrance on Tyler Street which links Wincobank, Meadowhall and the Interchange perhaps with a custom made archway and flowers. Install fencing (right) along Tyler Street leading to the junctions with Barrow Road. Additional litter bins are needed in this area as well. Also, to remove the litter from the unregistered land on Tyler Street outside the entrance to Meadowhall Transport Interchange. Tyler Street February, 2011 July , 2011 The land opposite the Transport Interchange pedestrian entrance on Tyler Street is unregistered. There are large amounts of fly tipping visible during the winter months. In summer Japanese knotweed predominates. This area would look fantastic with a perennial prairie planting scheme, but first the knotweed has to be removed. We would seek to improve this area with perennial prairie planting after the removal of the knotweed. Transport Interchange, April, 2011 Approach the Interchange to see if the will get the railings repainted and steps relined. The poor paintwork has an adverse impact on the overall visual appearance of the Interchange. 23
Another key aim would be to remove the litter from the unregistered land just outside the entrance to the Interchange car park on the Trans Pennine Trail (left). Also improve the maintenance of the section of TPT between the Interchange and Meadowhall Travelodge (below). The ironwork on the railway bridge is a key feature but needs repainting. TPT embankment adjacent to Travelodge car park would look fantastic with perennial prairie planting scheme. It would add colour throughout the year, comes back every year and does not need maintaining. 24
OutoKumpu site on Fife Street (10.9 hectares) has just been demolished. It is part of the developed flood plain and currently up for sale. It would make a fabulous wetland nature reserve. We have approached Sheffield Wildlife Trust to investigate this proposal. 25
February 2011 March 2011 May 2011 July 2011 Part of Newman Court has been retained with a view to turning it into a community building. The grounds have been planted with wildflowers by Green Estates to improve the appearance. September 2011 September 2011 26
For the first time last year we had a Lantern Parade and Carols around the Christmas Tree event on Barrow Road, December, 2010. This is now an annual event. ‘Love Wincobank’ logo launched, September 2011 with local Cllrs Peter Rippon, Jane Bird and Peter Price Wincobank Flower Festival, October 2011 27

  • 1. 1
  • 2. Wincobank – the ‘Corner Shop Community’ – the majority of Wincobank’s businesses are all on corners! 2 Wincobank still has as many businesses in 2011 as it did before Meadowhall was built.
  • 3. Clean - Ups WincobankCommonwith the Friends of Wincobank Hill, 3 March 2011 Fife Street with Wincobank TARA, 21 March 2011 Trans Pennine Trail with Travelodge Meadowhall, 25 March 2011
  • 4. Barrow Road with SCC NEAT team 28 March, 2011 Railway embankment by Network Rail along Ecclesfield Road, Barrow Road and Tyler Street, April 2011 Barrow Road embankment between the railway bridge and start of the crash barrier. Unregistered land cleared by Environmental Services as a one off using Environmental Enforcement budget 9 May 2011 4
  • 6. Graffiti has been removed throughout the village by Streetforce and other agencies. Once removed, it has not reappeared.
  • 10. September 2011 Fife Street between the two railway bridges, July 2011. February 2011 Three massive trees overhanging Fife Street have been removed for highway safety reasons. The job involved three separate road closures to complete the work. The land is unregistered and work has been carried out by Sheffield City Council. 10
  • 15. Boxing Glove seats installed September 2010 Footpath installed, September 2010 Tree planting with the community foresters January 2011 – 22 community groups, businesses and individuals sponsored trees. Bulb planting with the NEAT team and Wincobank TARA, November 2010 15 Snowdrops in the garden, January 2011
  • 25. OutoKumpu site on Fife Street (10.9 hectares) has just been demolished. It is part of the developed flood plain and currently up for sale. It would make a fabulous wetland nature reserve. We have approached Sheffield Wildlife Trust to investigate this proposal. 25
  • 26. February 2011 March 2011 May 2011 July 2011 Part of Newman Court has been retained with a view to turning it into a community building. The grounds have been planted with wildflowers by Green Estates to improve the appearance. September 2011 September 2011 26
