Audience based on:
 - Age
 - Gender
 - Class/Income
 - Ethnicity
 - Race
When carrying out our audience research
and questionnaires, we asked people
between the ages of 16-20. As a result of
this, we were able to see what sub-genre of
a ‘Thriller’ they preferred, (seen below in the
form of a graph), and what conventions
they would like to see, (seen on the next
slide as a graph).
Titles over a black background
               10%
As a group, we are trying to accommodate all
these features to attract this age range. As well as
this, by having the characters in the film’s ages as
25/26 – as seen by one of our characters below -
we are trying to attract a wider audience –
allowing people of these ages to attempt to relate
to the lifestyle/some activity of the characters,
therefore opening the target age bracket further.
We want to attract those who want to see the stereotype of
genders broken. In many films, it is usually seen that males are the
dominant gender on-screen, being strong, fearless, and powerful.
However, our film would portray the male character as someone
who is instead, living in fear, weak, and powerless against the
female character. In the media industry, females are perceived
as weak, somewhat insignificant; their purpose is usually to either
be saved by a male character so he looks good, or to glamourise
the film. But, our film would show the polar opposite – with the
female character being psychotic, oblivious, and the central
focus of the film.
As it is a low-budget film, viewers are able to see what can
be made from low finances. Even though there would be
little investment, audiences can witness what the outcome
is, and be proud that not a lot of money was spent in the
process of making the film. As the final grossing of the film
would be unknown, it is less likely that money would be lost
due to its low budget. As well as this, by allowing both our
characters to have jobs, we are giving the working class
something they may be able to relate to in our film.
The film would mainly be focused on
British people. As the film would be an
independent British film, British people
may feel proud/sense of pride that a
British film which features British actors
has been released.
Although white people are usually perceived as
the protagonists of a film, our film would portray
one as psychotic, and the other as someone living
in fear. This way, the characters are both seen as
weak: the psychotic character being weak
mentally, and the other character being weak
physically. Consequently, our film would disregard
the usual view of white people in the film industry,
and portray them in a contrasting way.
Audiences based on:
 - Attitudes
 - Tastes
 - Personality Types
People who are alert; they need to keep up with the fast-
paced storyline.

Open-minded; they need to follow the film going against the
typical stereotypes – willing to watch the film that would break
away from the usually seen portrayal of genders.

People who can get caught up in
the world of the story; the frequent
use of close-ups of the characters
will let audiences see the clear
expressions/emotions of the
character – enabling viewers to know exactly what the
character is thinking/feeling, allowing them to relate/associate
with the character, to feel as though they know them.
People who like the idea of representation, as the film would not follow
the usual representation of genders, we want to attract audiences who
are uninterested/tired of the typical view. Therefore, by our film going
against this, we aim to attract those who want to see a film that shows
a different side to the representation of the characters within the film.

People who like to work out the storyline of a film because, as our
genre is a ‘Psychological Thriller’, it includes mind-games. Also, viewers
will have to keep up with what is going on in the characters mind, as
well as their activity/setting.

Audiences who enjoy a wide variety of film genres: ‘Horror’ as our film
will include slight hints of fear, and ‘Mystery’, because it will also include
tension, and in some parts be quite vague as it is withholding
information from audiences. However, the main genre would be a
‘Thriller’, as our film would involve a quick pace, and suspense would
be carried out throughout the duration of the film.
People who are imaginative; in the opening sequence of the film, there is no
dialogue – meaning audiences will have to think about what is going on,
and what may have led to the circumstances as no dialogue is helping them
to understand the relationship between characters/the story so far. As a
result of this, viewers will have to imagine their version of the plot, and go
along with the psychological elements included in the film.

People who are able to keep up with the storyline, as well as the
psychological aspects of the film. Audiences will need to work out parts of
the film that the movie may only hint at. Viewers will need to have their own
understanding/meaning/interpretation of the film.

People who are quite serious because, due to
the dark/creepy atmosphere of the film – which
would also be emphasized by the dull colours
of the characters costumes . Unlike bright colours
which would connote a happy, fun environment,
dark colours would help build up a mysterious,
solemn tone to the film.

Target audience of media

  • 1.
  • 2. Audience based on: - Age - Gender - Class/Income - Ethnicity - Race
  • 3. When carrying out our audience research and questionnaires, we asked people between the ages of 16-20. As a result of this, we were able to see what sub-genre of a ‘Thriller’ they preferred, (seen below in the form of a graph), and what conventions they would like to see, (seen on the next slide as a graph).
