Background
The organizing of the 1st KAMPUNG BHARU MINI DOCUMENTARY
COMPETITION was initially planned as plan to extract valuable historical
information in October 2014. However, due to various brainstorming session,
the documentary project is now changed into making it as a competition.
The concept and coordination of the project was reviewed, restructured and
updated. As a result, this proposal was made to ensure the organizing of this
inaugural competition to be a successful event.
It was renamed as KAMPUNG BHARU MINI DOCUMENTARY COMPETITION

4. 1. About KBMDC
Kampung Bharu Mini Documentary Competition
The first Kampung Bharu Mini Documentary Competition (KGMDC) is a mini
documentary competition which provide a platform for those who are active in
media, be it broadcasting institutions, both active amateur and professional
filmmakers, to document historical findings of Kampung Bharu.
Apart from delving into historical facts, the competition also aims to extract and
gather other unknown valuable information about Kampung Bharu inhabitants
and some of its core values. This will also encourage a continuous effort in
preserving and documenting important events in regards to Kampung Bharu.
This project is championed by M.A.S, funded partially by DBKL and The
National Archives and Finas

2. Objectives and Benefits
• To provide a platform for researchers, documentarians, film makers to
introduce, explore and produce series of findings and untold stories or a
solid feature length documentary based on the subject of Kampung Bharu.
• To encourage more local dwellers being part of the project.
(to have more local participations among residents)
• To encourage more researches to be done on Kampung Bharu.
(this will attract researchers from not only from Universities but from other
parties)
• To have a well documented historical materials to be preserved.
(so that involved parties such as Finas and National Archives will have more
materials)
• To promote Kampung Bharu as a historical and tourism center.
(Potentially looking at specific heritage walk and growth of localised
homestays)

4. Benefits
The competition will: -
• Gather the updates on stories and important facts that have never been told
before hence, the need to do this mini documentary competition.
• Splurge of untold stories that we never heard of will be kept, filtered and
documented for future publications, archiving or broadcasting.
• Create more interest among the locals as the subject itself as their own
pride
• Stir interest among researchers and students to conduct research on Kuala
Lumpur’s central historical settlement which some of it might not have been
told
• Recognize and place Kampung Bharu as a center for Historical township.
(another reason for Tourism acknowledge Kg Bharu as another landmark)

• CATEGORY A (Mobile Content Submission)
- Category A is a short term competition which takes up only 4 months to complete
(from launch – submission / Mar-Jun)
• CATEGORY B (Professional Content Submission)
- Category B is a long term competition which is open to semi professional and professional
individuals who are in the broadcast industry

• 1. Open to Malaysian. They have to submit a short pitching trailer and send to us in
mp4, quicktime or wmv format.
• 2. The pitching trailer content must be produced based on any of the following
topics:
a. History
b. Social Issues
c. Unsung Heroes
d. Environmental & Health
e. Socioeconomics
f. Food
g. Architecture
• Those with strong concept and good storytelling in the form of trailer will only be
selected by our judges
11. How it works
• Congratulations! You are now in the running for the finals. You are required
to attend a 2 day workshop consisting of mobile videography and post
production workshop handled by industry professionals.
• You are required to submit your final product which consist of the final
product along with your working file with the aforementioned format in a
DVD.
• 10 finalists works will be published on the competition youtube channel and
winners will be determined by amount of “Likes” and professional judges
scoring.

• 1. Requirement
• Category B is the main full scale competition which is open to semi professional and professional
individuals who are in the broadcast industry. Thos who wish to participate in this category, you
are required to submit the application by downloading the application form and submit it to
[kbdc@gmail.com] latest by 5th March 2016.
• The 10 best selected participants will have to present their ideas in a pitching session.
• We will only pick 3.for the finals.
• 2. Who can join the programme?
• All SME companies with at least 51% local shareholding and required to come up with great idea,
good storyline and interesting character lead story which is related to the theme or subject.
• Open to semi professional and professional individuals who are in the broadcast industry
• 3. What can disqualify the company from participating?
• Producers who have received more than 2 times content development fund from any government
agencies; and
• Productions that are found to be related to more than one (1) project will cause both projects to be
cancelled.

• 4. What are the benefits to documentary producers for participating?
• 3 finalist will be given a development fund of RM600,000.00 to produce three (3) different
documentaries.
• Top three (3) winners will have the opportunity to go into full production of their documentary
under PITCHING CENTRE / FINAS
• 5. How to apply for the programme?
• Applicants must submit their application by downloading the application form and submit it to

• 6. How the production companies are selected?
• The appointed judges from the secretariat will evaluate the applications submitted online. 30
companies will be invited for 5 minutes pitching session on 27 FEB at Panggung Bandaraya to
share their initial ideas for the documentary. (KIV)

• 7. How the trailers / submissions are evaluated?
• For category (A), evaluations will be made based on originality and innovation in style and
content, and promoting under-represented viewpoints using a scoring system totaling in 10
points.● 5 points for story (is it an interesting character lead story?)● 5 points for originality of
storytelling and style
• For category (B), evaluations will be made based on originality and innovation in style and
content, and promoting under-represented viewpoints using a scoring system totaling in 10
points.● 3 points for story (is it an interesting character lead story?)● 2 points for originality of
storytelling and style● 2 points for experience, vision and ability of the creative team● 2 points for
feasibility of the project with respect to its budget, financing, schedule and scope.● 1 point for
