What is Coaching? What do you understand by the term “COACHING”? Coaching in simple terms can be defined as: “The process of helping someone enhance or improve their performance through reflection on how they apply a specific skill and/or knowledge”

COACHING TECHNIQUES Explain importance of issue being addressed (purpose & part) Clarify how it’s done (process) Show how to do it (picture) Observe person doing it (practice) Feedback (pats & pointers) Agree on next steps (proceed on path)
Why do we need Coaching? The reasons why people require coaching are: To maximize knowledge transfer Coaching provides a learning channel that effectively transfers knowledge within the organization  Critical knowledge is maintained in the organization  Contextual learning is evident
Why do we need Coaching? The reasons why people require coaching are: To increase the skill levels The coaches can very effectively transfer core skills  Customization of skills in relation to the core activities of the business is retained  Cross training of staff can be achieved
Why do we need Coaching? The reasons why people require coaching are: For succession planning The ability for the organization to identify ‘fast track’ candidates and prepare them for new jobs is enhanced by coaching & mentoring  Coaching & Mentoring can ensure continuity of performance when key staff leave the organization because core skills have been transferred
You are not “COACHING” if….. You find yourself only telling someone what to do You find yourself stepping in to do the actual work You restrict the activity to set times or scheduled events “Coaching is a “just in time” & “in the right place” process
Some Do’s and Don’ts of Coaching DO’s Map out different strategies & share them with everyone Allow everyone to participate to their ability Let minor problems go unless repeated regularly Provide lots of time & opportunities for practice Provide lots of positive feedback as well as adjusting feedback Ask questions to help others think through DON’Ts ,[object Object]
