Cumulative Impact of Armoring Reduction1. What is the cumulative impact
of shoreline development and
restoration projects on
Bainbridge Island?
2. In the last 13 years,
68 shoreline modification
permits were issued.
3. 1,690 linear feet of new rock
bulkhead was installed.
rock bulkhead = hard armoring
4. That’s 0.6% of the island’s
53 miles of shoreline, or roughly
1/16 of an inch of new bulkhead
for every foot of shoreline.
5. 1,690 feet in 13 years
equals 130 feet per year
It’s old math, but it still works.
6. At 130 feet per year, it would
take 1,076 years to modify the
remaining 50 percent of our
shoreline...
10. When completed, they will result
in a 750 foot net reduction of
hard shoreline armoring.
2,440 ft removed - 1,690 ft installed = 750 foot reduction
That’s 57.7 feet per year.
11. At that rate, the entire 53 miles
of shoreline would be free
of hard armoring in 4,850 years!
13. but it shows that restoration
projects will keep the island from
being completely armored.
15. Dept. of Ecology staffers and
local planners tell us it’s a good
thing, so it must be.
