● In 2013: 
o 3.7 million international arrivals were from Japan 
o That’s 5.3% of all 69.8 million international arrivals 
in 2013 
● Japanese tourists represent the 4th largest market for 
US tourism behind Canada, Mexico, and the UK 
● Japanese travelers paid $16.5 billion for U.S. goods 
and services in 2012 —a 13% increase from 2011 
● The U.S. is the most popular international destination 
for Japanese travelers, just surpassing China in 2012.

● Chinese tourists are forecasted to be the market with 
the highest growth potential in the next 4 years, with 
a growth of 138.6% thru 2018 
● In 2011, 1.1 million Chinese travelers visited the U.S.— 
a 36% increase from 2010. 
● Chinese travelers spent $8.77 billion in the U.S. in 
2012 
● China surpassed Italy and Australia in 2011 to become 
the 7th largest overseas inbound travel market to the 
United States.

South Korean Tourists in the U.S. 
● In 2012, 1.3 million South Korean travelers visited the 
U.S., a 9% increase from 2011 
● South Korea is the 9th largest overseas destination for 
U.S. travel exports 
● The U.S. accounts for 35% of South Korea’s long-haul 
travel, and is the third most popular international 
destination behind China and Japan. 
● Travel expenditures in the U.S. increased to $4.15 
billion in 2012—a 10% increase from 2011.

billion 
● 134,231 visitors are spending $25.7 million daily in San 
Francisco
