Communication barriers can be found everywhere in business, from the top down to middle management to external relationships. Communication breakdowns occur organizationally, such as when team members are isolated, or individually, when a person misinterprets or ignores what another is saying. They can arise from too many distractions at work or not enough clarity about a project.

Communication & its barrier

2. What is Communication
Communication is the activity of conveying meaningful information. It
requires a sender, a message, and an intended recipient. The
communication process is complete once the receiver has understood the
sender and provides the feedback.
3. Barriers to Communication
No matter how good the
communication system in an
organization is, unfortunately
barriers can and do often occur.
These barriers are those which
make the message doubtful for
the reader to understand it and
they get confuse to interpret the
meaning for which the message
is sent to them.
4. Physical Barriers
The major physical
barriers are:
Time
Place
Noise
Space
Some of them are easy to
Alter whereas, some may
prove to be tough
obstacles in the process of
effective communication.
5. Time
Time has an important role
in a communication
process. Do we not often
hear expressions such as
“timely caution”, “timely
advice?”. These
expressions indicate the
role of time as a factor in
communication.
6. Place
The place or the location where a communication
process takes place can degenerate into a barrier to
effective communication.
7. How to overcome physical
barriers
A way to over come Physical Barriers would be to
have a certain amount of people in the room or
place that the presentation is being held, so that
the close proximity of other people, would be there
so that the audience could concentrate fully on the
presentation, not other people.
A mechanical mean to help with this would be to
have a Excel page about where the people should
be standing and how many can fit in the room
itself and its capasity.
8. Noise
Noise is a physical barrier to effective
communication. Noise may have its origin from an
external source or may exist even in the
communication loop.
9. How to overcome Background
Noise
A way to over come Background Noise would be to
wear ear muffs or headphones, which are noise
cancelling. An example of these would be the Sony

These headphones are very good to block out the
noise of other things happening around you.
This then helps you to concentrate on the subject,
and not to be distracted by Background Noise. You
would wear these when speaking or simply
working to allow proper concentration.

separate areas for people of different status
results in creating a barrier to effective
communication.

We all see the world

preferences, values,

understanding of others.
Many times, emotional
barriers on your part or the
part of the person you are
speaking with may inhibit

Cultures provide
people ways of
thinking--ways of
seeing, hearing, and

they talk the "same"
language.

rules about proper
behavior which affect
verbal and nonverbal
communication.
Whether one looks the other
person in the eye-or not;
how close the people stand
to each other when they are

politeness which differ
from culture to culture.
