1. NỘI DUNG HỢP TÁC GIỮA VIỆN CNTT-TT, ĐHBKHN VÀ NATIONAL INSTITUTE
OF INFORMATICS, JAPAN VỀ THỰC TẬP NGẮN HẠN CỦA HỌC VIÊN CAO HỌC
VÀ NGHIÊN CỨU SINH.
1. Target candidates:
Master's and/or Ph. D. degree students who are enrolled in the partner
institutions that have signed MOU agreements with NII.
Note: Those who have obtained the Doctor of Philosophy degree before
the start of internship program are not qualified as internship students.
2. Time frame:
Interns accepted for this program will participate for two to six months, with
the start during the period from December 2009 to March 2010.
3. Application:
• Candidates
-Fill out the NII International Internship Program application form and
submit it to your supervisor.
-Choose up to three topics out of the list of research topics.
-No direct application from candidates is accepted.
• Each partner Institution
-Collect application forms from candidates and after making its selection, send
them to NII via e-mail.
-Each partner institution can send a maximum of three applications.
4. Sojourn expenses:
Interns will receive 5,700 yen (about US $60 or €42) per day as sojourn
expenses (171,000 yen (about US $1,800 or € 1,250) /30 days.)
Transportation expenses are in principal not paid.
5. Selection:
Screening of applicants is conducted by each NII laboratory according to the
research topics selected by an applicant.
6. Application deadline:
Application deadline is October 23, 2009.
7. Notification:
Notification to successful applicants after November 4, 2009.

※ Reference
1. (Topic No. 15) Candidates should have mastered the basics of automata theory and be mathematically
mature enough to be able to prove new results on their own. See my recent publications and lecture notes
for the course “Mathematical Linguistics”, available on my web site, for examples of research on this topic.
2. (topic No. 37, 38) Rigorous background on mathematics is required. In particular, sufficient knowledge of
linear algebra, graph theory and number theory are important requirements. Programming skills on image
processing or computer vision are also required.
3. (Topic No.43) So far the selection of point in movement, or the selection of numerous elements in a video
database is a time consuming and cumbersome operation. Appropriate modality in combination with
machine learning may help to perform these operation better. Students should have interest in User
Interfaces, Virtual Reality and Knowledge Representation.
4. (Topic No.44) Gibbs sampling is slow. There are many application specific ways to be explored make it
faster. We are looking for alternative methods for generating patterns and texture in an efficient mean.
Students should have interest in Statistical Frameworks.
