18. Case Study: Project Athena (Verizon)
Situation
• Striking lack of diversity in organization’s tech workforce
• Products could be improved if developers better reflected
the diversity and perspectives of customers
• Existing talent pools expensive and largely tapped out
• People in underserved communities represent untapped
potential for technologists that would better reflect the
organization's customers
How We Helped
• Utilized the dojo approach and environment
• Hands-on full-time coaches working with students daily
(side by side, hands on keyboard exercises, answer
questions, address topics and teach life skills)
• During the second phase of the program (2 months) our
coaches were embedded with teams to help students
transition and build organizational specific skills,
context, and culture
Outcomes
• 40 students, diverse in age, gender, race, religion
and other attributes
• 36 of the 40 students graduated to mentoring phase
• 29 of the graduates accepted job offers as
permanent employees in the organization
• All 36 graduates now have ability to be successful
technologists anywhere in the industry
• 27 of 29 still employed with Verizon two years later

19. Case Study: Project Opportunity
Situation
• Large number of employees in redundant roles that
needed to be redeployed or risk downsizing
• Ongoing challenges with hiring and retaining
software engineers
• Talent shortages creating risk to business transformation
efforts
How We Helped
• Advised the client team and their HR partners on the
candidate selection process, program planning and setup
• Hands-on full-time coaches worked with students daily in
a fully remote environment (pairing; mentoring; teaching
TDD, Agile and other professional practices; life coaching)
• During the mentorship phase, our coaches assisted
students with the transition to a professional
environment and helped them build on the learning
patterns they developed in the curriculum phase
Outcomes
• 20 students, diverse in age, gender, race,
experience and other attributes
• All 20 students graduated from the program
• 19 are still in development roles
• CEO described this as the easiest funding
approval he’s ever given because “it solved a
need, was good for the employees and was the
right thing to do.”
