1. Production: The production of media could be one or the other, it
could be the ability to produce a mainstream or independent film. A
mainstream film producer would make lots of money out of a film by
reviewing it and agreeing to produce it for a percentage of money.
1.Development- Treatment/ Film Outline/ Script
2.Packaging- Pitch idea/hire creative staff.
3. Pre-production- Storyboard/ Final draft of script/insurance/logistics
4.Principal photography- Filming
5.Post production- Editing/SFX
2. Distribution is how you sell a film, it is the ability to promote a
sequence through social media or power of word. People
distribute films by using sites such as Twitter, Facebook and even
Blogger.
• Theatrical distribution
• Videogram
• PPV
• Non pay television
• Streaming
• Online distribution
Exhibition: If you exhibit a film you are in a way promoting it. This
is usually by function as a DVD, Main Stream Cinema or
Independent Cinema.
3. Production
• How the audience exhibits or view the film
• An independent film means that the film is not distributed by one of the 6
big which include Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures,
Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.
• It’s a movie which usually has a low budget not in Hollywood.
• The plot is usually whitty and clever but don’t usually involve action.
Mainstream Cinema
• Films made by the big 6 cinema companies.
• Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures, Warner Bros,
Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.
• They usually have a big budget and more filming staff are appointed so they
are usually more effective
4. Mainstream Cinema-
• Columbia Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Walt Disney Pictures,
Warner Bros, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios.
• Republic Pictures was an American independent film production-distribution
corporation.
Independent Cinema-
• Warp Films- Produced films such as This is England, Four Lions and
Dead Mans Shoes.
• Island Pictures- A producer of small TV programmes.
5. Independent production companies fund their products by seeking
investments from privately owned and small name businesses which
want to promote their business through a film almost acting as a
sponsor. Investments usually put money into a film as more of a
business idea as this helps to promote the film and the business so
both parties are happy.
6. Distribution
Film Festivals are increasingly more important because at this point,
it’s not necessarily the case that films reap most of their financial
reward from theatrical distribution. In fact, theatrical distribution
often counts for very little of a film’s earnings because films now
make most of their money through cable distribution packages and
DVDs.
The advantages of self distribution is that you can retain full rights of
your film allowing you to decide what cinemas your film is shown at.
Another advantage is that you don’t have to give a large cut of money
to a distributor if you distribute it yourself. The advantages are that it
can be a full time job in itself as it is very time consuming finding
buyers and making sales of your film. Also it may limit your options to
distribute films as certain distributors have good relations with people
who will buy the films as it is distributed by their big name company.
7. How can you exhibit independent films?
The best way to introduce and exhibit films is to visit film
festivals and try to promote your film to viewers. Advertising
online and in public is one of the best ways to promote
independent films, this is because usually they are low
budget and are independent people directing them. A good
film festival to visit is the ‘UK FILM FESTIVAL’ this is based in
London and runs from the 17th to the 21st of November and
screens very good films which are all independently made.
You can also exhibit a film in one of 2 categories, Theatrical
and Non Theatrical. Theatrical is when you screen your film to
a paying public audience. However Non Theatrical is when
you show is when you screen a film to a closed membership
group (such as a film society or an educational group).

10. Having conducted this research I believe We do not need to have
our film distributed as it is only a short film and on a low budget,
we will distribute the film by word of mouth which is the most cost
effective way to distribute the film. We will make the film available
to distribute online on youtube and on blogger.com. I will then go
onto advertise our film by showing teaser clips on youtube of what
is to come from our film. A facebook page is a good idea to
promote our film, getting as many likes and spreading the word
will be the main aim once our opening is released and I believe
these functions are the best way to do this.
