3. In making concrete or mortar, water is needed to harden the cement binder.
To obtain a certain workability / flow an excess of water is used / needed.
This excess water lowers considerably the strength of the concrete / mortar,
increases the porosity and shrinkage and reduces the durability of the mortar or
concrete.
In order to achieve a concrete / mortar with high or ultra high strength paired to a
good flow, binder ratio and grading of fillers are optimized.
This enhances the workability and the mass is better compacted.
Use of “superplasticizers” is mandatory. It substantially reduces the water to cement
ratio and improves the rheology , flowability and workability of the mortar / concrete.
It also facilitates the use of fibers in order to increase ductility.
All this improves strength and durability of the mortar / concrete.

4. Because of the fineness and adsorption of some of the additives on the fine cement
particles combined with a relative low water amount, high yield stress
(intensiveness / time / speed of mixing) is needed to disperse all ingredients well.

For this reason when using these high strength cements / mortars in first instance the
mix seems to be too dry - one is tempted to add more water - NO this is not the way -
keep on (high shear) mixing the mortar / concrete and after a few minutes the right
viscosity is obtained, and can be extracted.
