3. West Langley Hockey Box
As Lunn described in 2021, Public sectors “provide recreation that because of its nature continually
reinforces values and ideals of establishing and maintaining a healthy lifestyle to the user”, and the
Hockey Box allows people to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Having a healthy lifestyle means that you're
physically and mentally fit, and part of being physically fit is getting enough exercise, and part of being
mentally fit is having a strong social life. Therefore, playing hockey, basketball, and tennis allow the
citizens of langley to play sports that force cardiovascular exercise, and socializing. This is because in
all these sports you are either running or rollerblading with others that share the same love for the
game which enhances you to be physically and mentally well.

4. West Langley Hockey Box
Recreation
The Hockey box is recreation-oriented because the box does “comply with the intent and spirit of the Charter of
Rights and Freedoms and human rights legislation and should provide opportunities for both genders, all age
groups, all ethnic groups, and special interest groups” (Lunn, 2021). This is because the Hockey box is public,
meaning anyone of any age, gender, or ethnic group can go to the box and play tennis, basketball, or hockey
with each other. There are many times where my friends and I go to play street hockey at the box, and there
are people there that are already playing hockey, which means we join up with them and play a game with
players of different ages, ethnicities, and skill levels. This illustrates that the hockey box brings the citizens of
Langley together to enjoy the game they love, which is not only good for the community but good for society
(Lunn, 2021).

5. Walnut Grove Secondary School
Walnut Grove Secondary is a high school that students join in grade 8, and graduate in grade
12. The school is “valuable to society” (Lunn, 2021) because the school offers free education,
inturmals, and clubs for students of all grades. Walnut Grove also has always had a high
graduation rate which sets up students' success for post-secondary. This high school also
values diversity by holding an international program where they allow students from any country
to come to the high school and receive their high school diploma in Canada.

6. Walnut Grove Secondary School
Recreation
Walnut Grove Secondary is an example of recreation. This is because the school offers many clubs
such as the ultimate frisbee, and glee club, as well as intramurals that any student of any grade can
join which creates a “cohesive and quality community” (Lunn, 2021) For these activities mentioned,
they are free of charge to any student therefore, students do not have to worry about paying to partake
in activities. However, if a student wants to participate in a school sports team, they must try out for the
team and pay a fee for jerseys and other equipment once they are on the team. This high school is
also an example of physical education because students in grade 8, and 9 have to take the same P.E.
course and in grade 10, you can choose between the weight room or P.E. and the school offers an
outdoor learning program where the students take hikes and bike trips to different places to allow
students to get exercise, as well as learn about the class material.

7. Walnut Grove Community Center
The Walnut Grove Community Center is a place that delivers Fitness, sport, age-related programs, events, arts,
leadership, etc. (Lunn, 2021). The community center is funded by “Taxpayer and user fees, small grants, and
increasingly, sponsorship/ads” (Lunn 2021)
Recreation
The municipal government allows people from different cities to come to the walnut grove community center and offers a
variety of activities. The hot spot that most people go to is the indoor pool inside the community center. The pool offers
swim classes, birthday parties, and hosts many swims meets for athletes, however, the center also has multiple
basketball courts, a weight room, and a “teen center” which helps people maintain a healthy lifestyle (Lunn, 2021)

9. Fort Langley Golf course
Fort Langley golf course is a par 71 course that is a great way to enjoy nature, golf, and spend
times with friends. This course has three different tee boxes with unique challenges and
elevated greens that bring out the best in golfers. Fort Langley Golf Course is a commercial
sector because the consumer pays to play the course and the course collects profit (Lunn,
2021)

10. Fort Langley Golf course
Recreation and coaching
This is an example of recreation because, in 2021, Lunn describes commercial recreation to be sports events,
and the golf course hosts many amateur tournaments, and events in the summer, and spring. The course also
has many members, and the course hosts “members nights” every week. The members that are men have
men's nights every Tuesday where they tee off around 11 am to 12:30pm and play 18 holes and then after the
members eat at the restaurant located on the 18th hole. The same goes for the ladies, however, they play on
Wednesday. Furthermore, these member's nights show another event that the course puts on for golfers
illustrating why the course falls under commercial recreation.
This course also is an example of coaching because of the lesson program they have at the course. The
program is put on by the “course pro” where you can book lessons with him, and go on the course, or on the
putting green where you practice your game, learn how to read greens, and play the course smart.

11. Extreme airpark
Extreme airpark is a trampoline park that has many locations. The park has many different
areas such as dodgeball, basketball, a foam pit, birthday party rooms, and rock climbing for the
public to enjoy. This is a commercial sector because the service is available to anyone who can
afford it, and is provided at its facilities (Lunn, 2021).

12. Extreme airpark
Recreation and Physical education
This is an example of recreation because this park is a great way for people of all ages to have fun, and escape
the stresses of work or school for a couple of hours. Jumpers pay a fee for an hour, hour and a half, two hours,
or have a birthday party option where kids get their party room an hour and a half of jumping, and have pop,
cake, and pizza that they provide for them. This is a great way to get exercise and increase the quality of life for
the consumer (Lunn, 2021).
Extreme airparks are also an example of physical education because they allow physical education classes
from different schools to come to their facility and enjoy two hours of fun instead of staying at the school.

13. Steve Nash Fitness World
Steve Nash Fitness World is a commercial sector located in Langley City. This is a commercial
sector because people will pay a membership fee every two weeks to use the many different
fitness utilities which help consumers improve their quality of life (Lunn, 2021).

14. Steve Nash Fitness World
Recreation/ coaching
Steve Nash Fitness World is not only a gym where you pay a membership to go to workout, this
gym is also a personal training studio. This gym has many different personal trainers that will
help you reach your fitness goals quickly, and efficiently. All trainers have their training
certification, and many are kinesiologists. Not only does this gym help consumers improve their
fitness and strength, but this franchise of gyms also helps increase employment opportunities
for personal trainers, or those wanting to work at the front desk (Lunn, 2021) which showcases
why this is an example of recreation, as well as coaching due to the personal trainers available
and the job opportunities.

16. Steve Nash basketball league
This basketball league is an all-skill level league that runs out of St Nicholas Catholic Church in Walnut
Grove. This basketball league is voluntary because, without volunteers, this league would not be possible
therefore it “relies on members” in the league to make games and practices possible. All coaches volunteer
their time to improve players' basketball skills as well as coach games and make sure players are having fun
and playing fair. Also, all “staff” are volunteers as well. The tournament coordinators, team managers,
referees, and first aid volunteers keep this league running. The players pay a fee at the beginning of the
season to the tournament manager that goes towards equipment and paying the church to use their court.
This league is a fantastic way for players of all skill levels to try a different sport without the strict time
commitment of an academy or aaa team.

Recreation and coaching
This is an example of recreation because of the fair play rule the league has. This rule enforces
coaches to make sure all players have a fair court time, and you cannot bench other players for
poor play. A Lot of times on high-level teams, benching players can cause players to become
angry and lead to problems with team cohesion. Therefore, due to the relaxed nature of the
league, and the fair play rule being enforced, the league has created a cohesive and quality
community (Lunn, 2021).

18. Langley Minor Hockey
Langley Minor Hockey is operated primarily by volunteers except for the head
coaches of the AAA rep teams, and referees (Lunn, 2021). Therefore, this
organization strives to make hockey in Langley popular. Hockey is a sport that
has a lot of positions that need to be filled with the help of parents on the teams
therefore, every team has a “parent schedule” where parents are to volunteer
their time to score clock or game sheet. Furthermore, each team also has a
manager that helps to book ice, tournaments, and keep the whole season
organized and running smoothly.

19. Langley Minor Hockey
Hockey in Langley is very popular and has a lot of competition. There are many rinks in different parts of
Langley with numerous hockey trainers and off-ice trainers to help players reach peak performance. Langley
Minor hockey is an example of coaching because, without coaches, minor hockey would not be possible. This
organization starts in “Atom” which is ages 10-11, then goes to “Peewee” which is ages 11-12, then “Bantam”
(now called U-14), after is “Midget” (now known as (U17), and “Juvenile” which goes from ages 18 to 20.
Therefore, when coaching most of your players will be in the “train to train” stage. Unless the coach is the head
coach of a AAA team, all coaches are volunteers and must dedicate their time to a minimum of one to two
practices and two to three games a week depending on the team level. Furthermore, I have been coaching my
brother in Langley for the past two years in the train-to-train stage, and it has brought me nothing but joy. There
are some dilemmas coaches have with parents regarding play time however I still enjoy watching players

20. North Langley Church (Young Life)
North Langley Church is part of the community category of the volunteer sector (Lunn, 2021).
Young Life is a youth group run out of North Langley church. In young life, they meet every
Tuesday and play many different games and activities while meeting new people and having
fun. They also take a trip to rock ridge mountain every year once in the winter and once in the
summer. The leaders of a young life who run the program are volunteers, and they earn money
through fundraising to make the trips to Rockridge possible.

21. North Langley Church (Young Life)
Recreation
Young life accepts people from all age groups, all ethnic groups, and special interest groups to
their program (Lunn, 2021). Anyone who wants to learn more about Christianity or just wants to
come to the church and have fun is welcome to come free of charge. However, if an individual
wants to come to the Rockridge trip, they must help in the fundraising because, if the program
does not have enough money the trips and activities are not possible.
