Advocacy & Rights Foundation
2. Timeline for Building a Home
• Task Force formed in 2008 – included community members and individuals
that provide resources for abused and neglected children.
• Focused on information gathering and having a needs assessment conducted
by WSU. Completed in March 2010.
• GLMV offered pro-bono work on design of home. Completed rendering in
September 2010.
• Received 3 offers for land. Task Force recommendation for Hope CC land
accepted in April 2011.

• Feasibility Study conducted September – October 2011
• Capital Campaign Materials developed November – December 2011
• Silent Phase of Capital Campaign launched - January 2012
• Mabee Challenge Grant granted – February 2013
• Went public with campaign – March 2013
4. Risk, Needs and Resource Assessment
• Conducted by WSU Center for Community Support & Research.
Cost $2,300.00
• What is the relative risk v. resources in the communities served for children
in need of shelter?
• Who is the primary target population for the services (e.g. age group most at
risk)?
• How many children/youth are potentially in need for services?
5. Risk, Needs and Resource Assessment
• Conducted a literature review to determine appropriate indicators of risk and need.
• Gained input from professionals in the child services field.
• Evaluated data reports from SRS and KBI.
• Inventoried child welfare service providers in the area from the Children’s Alliance
Resource Project (http://www.childally.org/ca_frp/index.html)
• Inventoried the SRS 2010 Children & Family Services residential placement list.
• Conducted interviews with key informants that are involved with CINC cases or
who are placed out of home including children’s service providers.
6. Campaign Feasibility Study
• Conducted by Swanson House - Cost $15,000
• Understand and define goals and objectives for the campaign.
• Discover challenges and/or opportunities which could affect the campaign.
• Purpose was to gather information regarding support for the project.
• Identified individuals that are interested in the project and have the capacity to
support the project.
• Presented Test Case Statement for feedback.
• Conducted one-on-one interviews. Sent out 200 surveys.
7. Case Statement – A Child’s Secret
• A $2.5 million campaign to build a transition home for children who have
experienced neglect or physical, emotional, or sexual abuse. The home will
provide safety, security and hope to children who can no longer stay in their
homes.
• Identifies campaign goals and objectives
• Provides budget estimate for the home.
• Identifies ways to give including: cash pledge, securities, personal property,
real property, trusts, insurance policies, bequests.
8. Case Statement – A Child’s Secret
• Donors DO NOT make gifts for buildings, programs or endowments.
• Donors make contributions to improve lives of others and/or the life of
their community.
• Case statement needed to reflect the difference the home would make in the
lives of others.
• Designed as a child’s journal.
• Tells real stories of children who have been abused and neglected.
• Draw potential donor in and produce emotional response.
9. Sub-Committees
• Fundraising – capital campaign, annual fundraising, grants, sponsorships
• Public Relations – develop awareness of organization, news releases, etc.
• Construction – involved with the construction process
• Operations – management, volunteers, policies, procedures
• Licensing – facility, employees, volunteers

17. Facts About Donors
• #1 reason people make charitable donations is because they are asked.
• #2 reason is love of fellow man.
• 80/20 Rule: 80% of the donors give 20% of all donations and 20% of
donors give 80% of all donations.
18. Soliciting Potential Donors
• Start with those closest to the organization and work your way out.
• Of those begin with the biggest potential donors first.
• Develop custom cultivation and solicitation strategy for major gift asks.
• An essential component of success is asking the right prospect for the right
gift at the right time.
19. Capital Campaign Quiet Phase
• Need to have reached 50% of goal before going public.
• Lots of people will still know what you are doing, you just aren’t publicly
asking for funds.
